Overclocking Intel Q6600

Zero Cool

Forerunner
Hi, I have an Intel Q2d Q6600 2.4GHz & a weak Gigabyte G31m-S2l Motherboard. I am a total n00b when it comes to overclocking . I managed to push the proccy to 3GHz on air by increasing the FSB & by setting the control of voltages to auto.

i need to know that how far can i push my proccy on air & how to tweak the system voltages if i have to . Also what all do i need to do in order to adequately cool it , in case i feel like going over and beyond in overclocking.

So please recommend me in addition to the above :

a goof fan & price
Heatsink or cooler & their prices
a decent mobo & its price ( a few choices would be good though )

THNX

Have you checked ur voltages once set on auto? I think it would be somewhat high , check it with CPU-z. my mobo. set it to 1.5xx V once I tested on auto voltage with my Q9450 :O. So better manually set the voltage, you can search forums for Q6600 OC results and check the Voltage value for reference.

Suggestions on cooler
1. OCZ Vendetta 2 - somewhat cheaper and good performer.
2. Dont know about mobo. I m using Gigabyte GA-x48-DS4 and it has lotta overclocking options. but you should look for a mobo. with P45 chipset. hope someone reply with suggestion on this.
3. for fans..

You did not mention your budget for either, as suggested above OCZ Vanquisher at 1,300 or Vendetta 2 at 2,400 are great performers at their price point. Or if this deal gets somewhere, the Ice Blade Pro is an absolute steal too.

Your existing motherboard is very close to most P35 chipset's performance, I am guessing you would want to hit ~3.4 Ghz for a 24/7 setup, so you dont really need an upgrade. Since its a 65nm processor even on a good P45 board it'll only do about 4.0 Ghz at most.

Ditch OCZv2, the push pin design is just pathetic and OCZ has awkward fan positioning. For Intel go for Thermalright Ul90 + Panasonic Panflow 92mm. It should be available for ~2.3k ?

Spend your money on good cooling instead of a new motherboard. The current one is not as "weak" as you think. XD
Post your current OC(FSB, ram ratio, multi) and temps.
Then we can talk :)
