Three months hence and it will be time to bid adieu to Indore. I'll be moving down south, somewhere near Salem/Erode in TN. I need to get my stuff moved, and am on the hunt for good packers & movers. Most people I ask suggest me Agarwal P&M. Do I have other options at all? Quantity of stuff to be moved is relatively small.

The major stuff I have are: 29" CRT TV, Wooden TV table, one Godrej steel Almirah, a 220L LG refrigerator and my Caliber bike. Other stuff include clothes, utensils, and some appliances routinely found in a small nuclear family. No cots, dining tables, sofa, etc..

How much can I expect the charges to be? Also, does it make sense to sell off some of the major stuff here (Will not sell the Caliber at any cost.. :P ), and buy them when I move to the new place?

Let me know your opinions guys..!

Carrying a crt is just not worth it.
Better you sell it and get an 32 inch lcd at new place.
(just a suggestion you should buy a bigger size though)
first do get some estimates from the packers for the relocation.
Had a good experience with a certain gupta packers and movers. They had national permit but we used it for local shifting.
All packages reached safely and all precautions were taken so was a nice experience overall.
As for selling stuff i hear that commodities will be cheaper down south. So try to reason the things you will be taking along.

Agarwal charges are on the higher side but service is very good. I moved from Mumbai to delhi and transported everything worth 5 lakhs ( a 40 inch plasma tv ). total damage = Rs 2000 glass items.

The CRT is the one which I'm very much willing to sell. Would be a nice reason to upgrade to a bigger LCD too. :P Let me see what the lady of the house thinks.

@Ganesh: Checked the other thread earlier, and hence this thread. Wanted to know some alternatives with a pan India service. My brother has a good experience with Agarwal though (Hyderabad to Bangalore). What I'm really worried about is the distance involved..

There are folks who have had bad experiences with Agarwal P&M in the past.

You can add me to that list and that too a recent (Jan 2011) user of their services.

It was sheer luck that nothing was actually damaged in the transit. They took the stuff from my home in Mohali on Jan 22nd and promised delivery in Hyd by 2nd Feb. I got the delivery on 8th Feb after a lot of calls and the stuff arrived in a condition that looked like it has been left alone to gather dust for 5000 years after an apocalypse ended all human life. That was how thick the dust was on the boxes. As for the quality of excuses they make, it was laughable.

^^ I wouldn't really mind the dust if all the stuff reached me safe. :) BTW, how much did it cost you to shift your stuff through Agarwal?

So it seems there are indeed quite a few who have been customers of their dreaded service. I for one, would refrain from their service if a transfer is in the cards - not very likely though. Prasad, whatever service you end up choosing, ensure that all the fragile items are packed carefully - that extra precaution will ensure your things reach the destination safe. Even if this calls for all those additional styrofoam, bubble wraps, wooden packing.

Dispose off all bulky things that his little or no value and can be purchased later. That big ass CRT TV and that dining table (if it isn't worth relocating) at Indore and salvage whatever you can out of them.

^^ The problem is that I'm not getting reliable information about alternatives. There have been a few suggestions in this thread, but none with personal experience about long distance inter-city moving.

BTW, there is no dining table. The amount of stuff I have is actually very less - I've already mentioned the bigger items I own. The rest are mostly small stuff, nothing too delicate or important.

You wouldn't say that once you have seen the condition the boxes arrive in. Let me say that whether the stuff reach safely is entirely up to your luck. Also when I said that nothing was damaged, I meant "nothing important". One large suitcase had its hand broken and ripped off from one side. Their boxes were all torn and barely holding the stuff inside. There was dust every where. My Stacker 830 box had some oily residue. Its a good thing that Cooler Master provides such a good box, otherwise, whatever that oily substance was, it would have seeped in.

As for cost, they are very costly. Since I am single I didn't have a lot of stuff, but the min quote you will get would be around 11~12k. The guy told me that I can transfer a lot more stuff for the same cost, but the is cost I would have to pay even if I didn't have a lot of stuff. After taxes and insurance for 1.1Lac, the total came to 15.4k. Another colleague who is married and had a lot of house hold stuff and a two wheeler got a quote of 45k for Bangalore to Chandigarh.

Leo packers and movers have a good service, my parents have used their service for long distances like (karnataka to punjab) and (punjab to maharashtra) and not a single breakage till date.

@LN: That sounds scary now.. And if I'm gonna get a quote of more than 20k, I'll sell most of the stuff here and will transport the rest through Gati or something similar.

@RS4: Thanks for the suggestion.. Will look into it.

Aggarwal is costly. moving in same region is OK with most of them but as in your case its MP to TN, a full truck will cost a hell lot from known packers and movers. If you'll go for sharing basis, it is bound to get delayed, may take around 20+ days.

Few tips,

when they pack, you should monitor it, what ever is fragile/can break should get decent packaging and *you* should make sure of it.

Additionally all small P&M (not aggarwal) though charge you for insurence @ 3% of total cost, they never actually does insure your product.

Aggarwal take responsibility of insurence on themselves but you have too ensure that the price of the item you entered is proper. For example they may assess a table for 10K (which costed you 20) and in case of total damage, they may give you 8K considering depreciation on item. So ask him to enter proper cost or review it before signing.

Do not think you can keep their money and will deduct the damages as before unloading they will ask you for complete amount. Now obviously you are new to TN so will not have any support and they do.

I have used agarwal and professional personally, so these are from experience.

Aggarwal delivered goods on time in region (Hyd to Blr), but staff was not supportive, they did not unpack the goods but at least It was better than professional. A teammate hired a local transporter and his bike got 5-7 dents all over its body. So in short there is no name in this field which does not have -itrader :), but you have to deal with it.

My suggestion: If it is paid by company, either check with your local crowd if there is some known person to them as they will put some pressure on them when you'll be waiting for goods in TN.(it works). else better option is aggarwal but make sure you check the packaging.

If goods are less in numbers and robust you can also try Indian railways,

^^ Thanks for the detailed reply. Let me see what options I have. Have managed to convince my better half to allow me to sell the bigger stuff if the quote from Agarwal or anyone else is too high. For that I will have to get the quote first.. :)

Do any of these companies offer only packing services..? If I manage to sell off the huge stuff, I can just pack the rest and transport them through ABT or similar lorry service.

if you cannot pack all your goods in one truck then in process of loading and unloading other people's stuff , yours will be damaged ,and loading up a whole truck will be on the expensive side, in my case first time with agarwal , i was not particular in checking the packing , ended up with a broken table , which i got it fixed by their carpenters ( insurance does not help a bit ) second time in agarwal in which i checked all packing and loading very thoroughly , had no broken stuff

if its company paid then take "writers" , if personal then agarwal is the best of the bad lot :) ..

why salem of all places :|

[OT] ^^ Got to go to a place where there is a college. Not much choice left, with most dental colleges in the metros and Tier 1 cities filled with staff. Am happy though.. Closer to home, and away from the hectic schedule of a city life. BTW, it is not Salem exactly.. It is Tiruchengode, closer to Erode. May be we can have a Coimbatore TE meet after I move there.. :P [/OT]

It is not company paid. Expenses from my own pocket. :( And I'm very much sure that my stuff will not occupy the entire truck.

+1 to Indian Railways if nothing too fragile.

Also, you can try contacting Ford/Hyundai car dealers. The trucks after unloading the cars return empty back to their origins and sometimes they do carry stuff like this and also quote very reasonably. I am not sure about the insurance part and also they may not be as reliable as a professional P&M, but at times it could turn out to be a very VFM option if you are willing to take the risks involved.

heheh i know tiruchengode , forget hectic schedule of a city life , you are diving into the adventures of a tiny city in tamilnadu, good luck dude
