PC Peripherals PC Configuration for CAD/CAE & moderate gaming

Hi guys..
I'm in bangalore finally after lot of wandering.
Ok.. The title itself states the requirements.
Just for info.. CAD includes more of graphics and moderate mathematical calculations.. while CAE is all about intensive mathematical calculations..
And I'm a casual gamer.. I play games likes NFS, few FPSs like Crysis..
Budget is around 50K.. Can stretch if really required for the needs..
Looking for a 22" lcd..

22" lcd - DELL SP220WEPF should do costs around 14k or less i think....

proccy - Quad Core Q6600 2.4 GHz Q6600 8MB L2 cache 2.4Ghz 1066MHz FSB should be 9k me thinks,

mobo - not sure still need to think

Ram - G-Skill DDR 2 2-6400CL5D-2GBPQ 2GB (1GB x 2) 800Mhz < 2.5k

Graphics Card - i would suggest a Nvidia 8800gt ~ 11.5-12k or ATi Radeon 4850....if 4850 available then go for it saw in post in TE that its available for 190$.

this itself comes to ~ 38k except for mobo, PSU, case, HDD etc
 
I am assuming that you are building a home PC on which you will practise CAD/CAM and game casually
22" DELL

Proccy - E8400/any suitable quad (check if the software you are going to use will actually uses more than 2 cores before going for a Quad and ask yourself - are you really going to create that complicated an analysis problem that you need a quad)

Mobo - Any P35 mobo will do like Abit iP35E

Ram - 2GB should be more than enough unless you plan to work on HUGE assemblies (>1000 parts) or Really involved CAE work (even so CAE calcuation will be more dependent on the CPU than ram) if you are going for a 64 bit system then go for 4GB

Graphics - 3870/8800GT(S) will be enough - no need to go for Firestream/Quadro (AFAIK ATI cards can be softmodded to Firestreams - someone else can confirm)

HDD - go for a 320GB 7200.11 from seagate (A Raptor class HDD would be overkill for a home PC)

get a decent KB/Mouse combo - STAY Away from wireless combos if you want your sanity intact when you work on CAD packages

Get a VX450 PSU

Speakers etc - as per remaining monies

Just for your reference My office PC is a P4 3Ghx, 2GB Ram, Quadro FX 1100 (128MB) 19" CRT , 60 GB 5400 rpm HDD

My bottleneck is the office intranet, otherwise all but the most massive of assemblies load in decent - good times.
 
me also planning a similar PC,

i have one question though,

whats the difference between a quadro and a GeForce/firestream and radeon.

i really dont understand the need for the quadro/firestreams??
 
CAE can do wth lots of processing power...

If you are into SW/UGS-NX/Catia you could be found out sometimes wth gaming cards..

I would suggest AMD 4850 and use one of the patches from Guru3d to convert it to the FireStream Card... Initially there used to be bugs with the 2x00series patch, but now it works pretty well... Even if you dont want to patch it I would still suggest the AMD/ATI card...

For CAE lots of processing power helps and depending on your application you could go for a higher clocked dualcore rather than a lower clocked quad. Powermill for instance is not multithreaded and quad makes less sense if you are running one instance...Having said that with quadcore you can run multiple instances without trouble...

And add in lots of RAM if poss...4GB.

RAM : 2GB @800 GHz, which one?
HDD : Seagate 500GB or WD 640GB or ..?
DVD-RW : ....?
PSU : VX450 or ..?
Cabinet : any VFM ..?
GPU : 8600GT or 9600..?
Monitor : Dell SP2208WFP or..?
Speakers : AL MX5021 or ..?
Soundcard : onboard for now or ..?
UPS : ....?
Now PLEASE list the components with the prices..

Q6600 - 9975 (2.4Ghz)
E8400 - 8950 (3Ghz) ---- Better Choice IMO

Abit iP35E = 5400 (all P35 entry level mobos are around this price range)

Ram - F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ - 2400 (Sure the Kingston/Transcend will be a bit cheaper but whats a few hundred when spending 50k :p )

HDD : Seagate 500GB 7200.11 - 4200

GFX - Radeon 3650 - 5000
Radeon 3850 - 11500

PSU - VX450 - 3500

DVD-RW - Lite-on 20X sata 1300 (someone can maybe recommend a better one)

Cabby - CM690 - 4000

DELL SP2208WFP - 16000
E228WFP - 14500 - TN Panel

AL MX5021 - 6500 - If this is too much, buy a pair of High Quality Cans for 3-4k

Sound - Use onboard - else get the Xonar DX for ~ 5000 via KMD

UPS - APC 650VA 3300

Keyboard/Mouse - Say Logitech/Microsoft generic KB + Logitech MX310 1500 total

So your worst case total with these components comes to 70k - mix and match to get it within your budget
EDIT -- GFX can be swapped for 4850/70 as and when they come out, assuming you can wait that long - Go for ATI for CAD work - as mentioned by Vij - they can be soft-modded to firestream

^ For CAD work, it would be good for almost anything that he would throw at it, but gaming performance will take a hit. Crysis will probably be unplayable at anything but extremely low with everything off. (I mention crysis only because Mac has mentioned it in his 1st post).

EDIT - The chip in the FX 560 is also used in the 7600 so - CAD work should be OK on this, but for gaming the performance will be as per a 7600 with a non-gaming firmware
 
I'd suggest you get yourself a HD 4850 as ATi cards are always better in creativity suites. Also remember to get Quad and oodles of RAM minimum of 4GB.
 
Proccy - Get the quad if the usage is more on Ansys , dual core if for more CAD work

Mem - I would suggest 4gb, but again depends on what you will be using it for

Mobo - IP35-E should be good

Graphics card - Get the best one for your gaming needs, im sure it will be good for UG/CATIA
 
Ok.. guys.. I'll be using CAE much than CAD and not even huge assemblies..

so guys please focus on other parts than GPU..

don't wanna invade this thread with the wrong sudgessions but my father recently assembled a rig for him self for 3dMax, maya and premier pro stuff so i sudgesst u look @ this config. it might help u get ur rig

Motherboard: 780i Sli

RAM: 4X2GB Kingston DDR2 800Mhz

GPU: 9800GX2

HDD: 2XSeagate 7200.11 500GB in Raid 0 setup

i thing it is a decent setup of this purpose

this a nice point...initially i suggested quad because it has more core, so processing should be better....but since E8400 can be overclocked, it shud be performing equally to quad or more...get a decent heatsink for the E8400...i wud advice a artic cooler freezer 7 pro....cost around 1.5k i think...
