Hello people.... greetings to all.

I am having some real bad problem with my PC.
Its seems like some serious hardware issue, but I couldn't figure it out which one.
It was working fine last night, when suddenly the screen froze and half of the screen (block by block - like on the screenshot below) became black.
As a windows user, I felt like I rebooting the system....as that solves most of the issues......but this time it was worse.
Even the pre Bios screen wasn't showing properly (Screenshot 1) - and same for any other screens. Neither Windows XP nor Linux mint - boot up.

My specs are - Abit IP 35E mobo, Intel E8200, XFX 8800GT 512mb, CM 600W PSU, 2 GB Patriot RAM, 2 HDD+1 DVD.
And things are kinda old - 3 years 2 months.

Previously I had faced similar problem while playing Crysis 2 with higher screen resolution (higher than 1280x768) - the system hangs - had to hard restart machine few times.

Could someone please help me figure out the issue. I know one/some of the hardware is/are failing - need to know which one? Is it the GPU or Mobo or else?
Any pointer would be much appreciated.

TIA

errrr.. thats a p35 chipset mobo.. AFAIK that doesnt have an onboard gpu

@@mathrisk : From the images and inferring from what you said about the crysis thing, It seems ur gpu is to blame.

If possible, try to clean up the heatsink and apply a fresh coat of some thermal paste.

Lets us know how that worked out for you.

+1 For G80_gts

I also suspect GPU Culprit

Visual Artifacts are generally caused by GPU only, there's nothing wrong with your other components.

Also, it might be due to failing of VRAM of your GPU.. there's no possible fix AFAIK . :@

These artifacts are due to the GPU, better thy this GPU on your friend system, if artifacts continues (i guess it will), then you can be sure that the GPU is gone.

//this is just to close the topic

it was gpu problem. Couldn't find anyone to borrow (damn...everyone uses lappy now a days) - so got a cheap new GPU, and its working fine now.

Great, about your old GPU, run some experiment on it like the oven experiment, you might revive it :P

I had the same problem few years back. The screenshots clearly indicate a you error. Your you is kinda giving up it seems. Like ca50 suggests, try the over trick at controlled temps.

Check your GPU for any blown capacitors or burns. If there isnt any, then apply Thermal compound as other suggested. But IMO if a graphics card is having such issues, the reasons like drying out of the TP are very rare and mostly they are caused due to HW failure only...
