Oh yeah, I do believe this problem would pose a challenge !!!

This is a long post - pl. read it patiently - before jumping in to conclusions and shooting off replies.

My PC config: Intel Core2Duo E4500; RAM: 2x1GB 667; HDDs: 80GB(now removed), 250GB(IDE), 500GB, 1TB; Monitor: ViewSonic 1928w; PSU: Typical PSU (now FSP SagaII 400W); Graphics: integrated; Modem: UTStarcom WA3002G4 (BSNL); OS: WinXPSP3; MoBo: Intel 945G (now G31).

PC is used for 24x7 downloads, simple home computing, very light (Gamehouse, Barbie etc) games.

Problem: Each time I connect to the net & data flow starts, the PC starts stuttering, shaking, movement of the mouse becomes jerky and ultimately after a while it freezes and I have to reboot.

But, pl. note: when the PC is not connected to the internet, it is as smooth as silk.

I ran the dlplat and it declared network adapter as a culprit.

After trying a few things, I changed the following:
01. OS: reformatted 80GB SATA HDD and installed XPSP3 again : No improvement.
02. Installed a PCI-LAN card (RealTek) : No improvement (removed it later).
03. Changed the modem : No improvement.
04. Changed the splitter (ADSL-Phone) : No improvement.
05. Changed the LAN cable between the PC & The modem : No improvement.
06. Changed the phone cable between the wall point & the splitter : No improvement.
07. Changed the cable between the splitter & the modem : No improvement.
08. Measured the voltage at the phone wall point : found OK.
09. Attached soft-ferrite cores to all the cables : No improvement.
10. Changed the PC PSU to FSP SagaII 400W : No improvement.
11. Changed the wall power supply point, to a different strip : No improvement.
12. Changed the MoBo: ASUS P4 : No improvement.
13. Changed the HDD & use 250GB IDE (originally 80GB SATA) for the boot HDD and formatted to dual boot : Win7 & WinXPSP3 : No improvement - have the "jerkyness" in both the OS with data flow.
14. Installed WiFi in the PC (Netgear USB dongle) : No improvement.
I have tried all the options that I know.

What (else) do I do?

Re: A Challenge !

Can you try accessing internet off an Ubuntu Live disc? If the problem is hardware related it should show up in Ubuntu too.

There is almost nothing left to try.

15. Try using a liveCD/bootable USB of a Linux variant. (Your OS installation might have corrupt drivers; highly unlikely if you have tried both XP and Win7)

16. Try using a different PC/laptop with your ADSL connection.

17. Try connectiong another PC/laptop directly to your PC via a cross-cable and transfer some files. Check if the problem exists in your and the second PC.

18. Try a dial-up connection or something like Photon+ to access the internet.

19. Try your PC at a friend's place with his internet connection. Check whether his connection is working properly in the first place.
I am running out of ideas. This is really strange. Good luck.

@debabratad
Sorry, forgot to mention this: All drivers are updated.

@mod-the-pc:
I didn't try Ubuntu - will try. If you noticed, I literally changed almost all the hardware (excepting the PC case!).

@pr0ing:
Yes, it is really strange. Have been into PCs since college time (circa 1985), never seen this kind of issue.
Thanks for the additional pointers. Will try them & give feedback.

If pr0ing's suggestions didn't help than try metal body spike guard in between main power socket & your system connections

HTH

@Emperor:

I have a spike guard between the PC & wall power socket. Replaced that too - No improvement.

Will try the other suggestions & get back.

i had a similar problem a few years back...pc used to freeze whenever i connected n tried to use internet.

though using windows update i was able to solve my problem...

best of luck to u...hope ur prob gets solved soon

Can you just check once again if you changed any thing after which you started facing this problem hardware/software/internet connection.

can you also check if your net works with any other system/laptop/netbook or not?

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

have you checked your system for viruses/malwares/trojans with latest update to your antivirus?

Are the HDD's running in DMA mode?
How's the health of the HDD's?

If the data was being written to/read off the HDD running in PIO mode this would happen.

I really appreciate all your suggestions.

@demonic:

system is updated. If you can remember,was there any specific update that help in your case? Pl. let me know.

@iamddevil:

All HDDs are in DMA mode.

@vivacious_tg:

AV is updated. (Current one: Norton IS 2011, I use the AV&spyware part only, Firewall: ZoneAlarm)

@pr0ing:

15. Try using a liveCD/bootable USB of a Linux variant. (Your OS installation might have corrupt drivers; highly unlikely if you have tried both XP and Win7)

The Ubuntu was saying "no network". Will try this with another live-CD & get back.

16. Try using a different PC/laptop with your ADSL connection.

Will try it & get back.

17. Try connectiong another PC/laptop directly to your PC via a cross-cable and transfer some files. Check if the problem exists in your and the second PC.

Tried this, but for some reason, it did not work; may the cross-cable was not ok. LAN was not getting connected. Procedure-wise, I took help from google. Will try again.

18. Try a dial-up connection or something like Photon+ to access the internet.

Tried with Reliance NetConnect (similar to Photon+). There was no jerk in the PC. I am not sure if it is because of the low speed. The speed was quite low ~2kBps. My BSNL maxes out at ~52kBps.

19. Try your PC at a friend's place with his internet connection. Check whether his connection is working properly in the first place.

Not possible. I live a bit cut-off from civilization (due to job requirements, not being anti-social!)

***********************

One thing I forgot to add, that once the PC becomes jerky, I get repeated pop-up messages from the RealTek audio manager panel "You unplugged an audio jack". I don't know if that is relevant but it keeps on popping up till I stop all data flow from the internet.

fast way to transfer files between 2 PCs. skip to point 4 if you have sorted out the networking issues.

1. Find the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties page of the OS
2. Choose Custom Settings and add these values for PC 1
IP address 192.168.0.10
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.10

3. For PC 2 add these values
IP address 192.168.0.11
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.10

4. Use IPMsg IP Messenger to transfer files.
You can use the shared folder settings and skip the software too but that has failed sometimes I tried.

@pr0ing:
Other than the Default Gateway, which I left blank, other steps followed were identical to your suggestion. Also, will try with IP Messenger - I has seen this a decade ago in our company & found it to be quite a nifty app. Somehow never thought of this kind of app for personal use! Probably that is the beauty of these forums!

Any thoughts on the error message when the PC becomes jerky (you unplugged an audio device/plugged in an audio device). To give a more clear idea of "jerky" - the mouse movements starts getting "jumpy" & any video files start dropping frames/pixellation and audio file gets stuck / becomes noisy.

Will get back after trying. Thanks!

regarding the audio device plugged/unplugged message.
This is a very wild guess. The only thing where the two might be related is in their IRQ assignments. As you have tried multiple OS installations, that can be ruled out. Check what IRQ values are assigned to the audio device and lan port. Use Lavalys' Everest software if you don't know how to.

regarding the jerky movements. mouse/frame dropping.
These probably point to some process hogging your CPU power. Keep task manager on and check if that is true, you'll notice some process using upto 100% under the CPU tab. If you find a culprit, use procmon to find out exactly what that process is upto.

These suggestions will not solve your problem, but might help to isolate it.

Another wild idea.
20. Remove the mobo from cabinet and run it as a barebone system. To avoid removing the PSU/HDD etc, you can keep the case sideways and keep the mobo/everything on it with some insulation (stack of newspapers) between them. I have done this to check replacement mobos. Take care not to touch anything while operational and the usual no water spilling business etc.

if still struggling.. than... again ... Not just any Spike but Iron BODY

Since past 2 yrs facing similar issue bt with p2p connection from my pc to my laptop for ICS.

Whenever i do so, after some minutes the pc hangs no matter what OS or what activity. but the laptop stays on.

Pc & laptop has onboard lan. Tried pc with a pci lan card but that too dint helped.

This problem is still unsolved and mysterious :@& so my laptop is still without net and manually have to transfer data via pen drive.:(

@Jambumali

Anyways you can try to set your lan card speed to 10mbps and then increase to 100mbps gradually when its stable at 10mbps This is also on of the reasons of such hangs. Also you may try a p2p connection to another laptop/pc and just do a lan sharing file transfer of big files and check if either machine hangs or not.

If it doesnt, there something to do with your internet connection. If you have an ISP dialer contact him for a updated dialer or best explain him your issue.

Let me know further.

mine was a hp pc back then,the problem was in the realtek lan driver(Realtek RTL8139)...there was an update in the hp website which solved my problem.

so maybe even urs has some lan driver problem???

u have mentioned that u have tried swapping everything so i am not sure what ur problem just might be!!

@ronit: I am disappointed to note that you too could not resolve the problem.

Thanks to one & all for your time. I will try out the suggestions over this Sunday & get back.

just format and install the OS ..avoid internet security and AV ..install mobo drivers ...and check net connection

@pr0ing:

15. Try using a liveCD/bootable USB of a Linux variant. (Your OS installation might have corrupt drivers; highly unlikely if you have tried both XP and Win7)

Linux LiveCD: no jitters faced while keeping a download on (this post is typed using the LiveCD).

16. Try using a different PC/laptop with your ADSL connection.

Connected to my BSNL with another PC (Laptop). No issues faced in the laptop.

17. Try connectiong another PC/laptop directly to your PC via a cross-cable and transfer some files. Check if the problem exists in your and the second PC.

Crossover connection file transfer: transferred ~8GB of files from my laptop to the PC with video file playing in the problem-PC. No issues faced on either machine.

18. Try a dial-up connection or something like Photon+ to access the internet.

Reliance Netconnect+: downloading tried. PC crashed even at low speeds. I actually use the Reliance Netconnect for the laptop and have not faced such problems on the laptop

Checked using the regular Task Manager, there is no such process hogging.

regarding the audio device plugged/unplugged message.

I need to try this software. I will get back on this. Any ULTRA wild guess is most WELCOME. I am a desperate person, clutching at straws!

the audio device plugged/unplugged message.

this comes irrespective of any audio/video file playing at that point in time. This balloon keeps popping up till such time the PC freezes and restarts by itself or requires a restart to function again.

20. Remove the mobo from cabinet and run it as a barebone system. To avoid removing the PSU/HDD etc, you can keep the case sideways and keep the mobo/everything on it with some insulation (stack of newspapers) between them. DId not get your point. Do you suspect intermittent earthing of the mobo? If I leave the system without the internet, nothing happens, it remains silky smooth. Pl. note that I have already replaced the mobo. I will still try it next Sunday. Have to sort out some small issues now - school admissions etc!

@ronit:

I could not understand your suggestion on speed. Does the theoretical speed affect the performance, as the max I get is 512kbps only (BSNL unlimited connection for rural areas).

As to asking the ISP - my ISP is : rural area BSNL - I think you get the picture on customer support!

@Emperor:

When you mean iron BODY do you mean the material of the spike guard casing? My first spike guard was metallic body, the replacement is plastic (Cona). In addition, I was thinking of providing an alternate body earth by connecting a small wire to a nail in the wall.

Thanks once again to all of you, for your time!
