PC Game Sales Increase to Nearly $1 Billion in 2006

With all the constant talk that PC games are on the decline, PC is dying, it seems 2006 put a stop to that claim. According to the latest NPD numbers, PC games sales are showing signs of growth as revenues increased one percent to $970 million. OVerall sales for 2006 increase by 6% to top $7.4 billion.

"It's refreshing to see an increase in retail sales of PC games after having experienced a few years of declines. With revenues from digital downloads and subscriptions on the rise as well, the pc games segment of the industry remains healthy," commented NPD Group industry analyst Anita Frazier.

Oh noes ! Can't be true since everyone knows that PC gaming is dying !! :lies:

The strong sales mostly due to World Of War'crack'...ahem..warcraft and the everpresent Sims and its countless expansions(EA surely knows how to milk a franchise for all that its worth)....

And i surely hope PC gaming is not gonna die off anytime soon..

Someone said before, as long as there PC's, there will always be games for it.

The biggest problem PC gaming has today it really lacks in big-time exclusive franchise (except Sims and WoW). WoW with its 8 million online subscribers is a very powerful sign that's PC gaming is still alive....Ofcourse, I didn't think it'd make that far :P

That list of top selling games is enough to make me lose faith in all gamers. Not that I had much to begin with though.

pc games r nowehre close to dying dude, they will jus increase 10 folds ,no reasons why it should go down is there, i only see reasongs why things should better with all the new technology coming up

You keep mentioning this in the numerous pc vs console threads, but I still fail to grasp it. Sorry fortroubling you again, but could you please explain how exclusive titles is a good thing for the gamers?

It isn't good for gamers - it is good for consoles manufacturers.

Basically, if I have a PC and I can play all the games I can play on the X360 on that, then there is no incentive to buy an X360.

Conversely, if I have an X360 and there are no PC exclusive games, I might as well play those games on the X360 rather than spending on a comp game which will require me to spend on a gfx card upgrade.

Look at all the people (including me) who have bought nintendo systems so that they can play Mario and Zelda.

That answers the question I guess.

It isn't a good thing, but it encourages competition, which is good for gamers on the other hand.

Competition amongst whom?? I'm all for competition amongst game developers. However as KK put it, I still feel exclusive titles only help the console makers.

Frankly, I am not sure exclusives help so much always.

First party titles do, but exclusives can't be used as mascots.

I mean Nintendo can safely use Mario as their mascot.

But can Sony use the game MGS in a similar way? I mean, have they locked in the devs so that all sequels are also guaranteed to be PSx? The answer there is no.

I would if:

1. I had the time

2. I had the skill

3. I had the money

4. I had the inclination

Unfortunately I am a rather lousy gamer on anything that requires intense gameplay rather than rhythm, so WoW is out.

I liked Warcraft 3 (at least the few levels I played of it)

This figure is just for the legal sales.Lots more illegal copies are sold each year.So PC games are far from dying. We have this discussion every year and then games like flight sim x and crysis come out and people shut up for a while! Then they start all over again. If PC gaming is dying then could someone pls. tell me why do people spend so much money upgrading their computer hardware?? Unless and until gaming consoles bring keyborad and mouse support for games many will continue to enjoy pc gaming.

PC gaming will never die out simply beacuse of the sheer number of titles that are releases for the PC every year. But again PC gaming is for the rich who can afford to spend grand bucks each year on upping their hardware. For the ret of the ppl console gaming comes out to be cheaper.

you can always have a workaround for all these games........use emulaters to play them on PC and you can also buy all kinds of console controllers for the PC
