This behavior can occur if the Ntdetect.com file is missing or damaged.

I have read it and come with this info, I hope this will help you to fix NTdetect.

1:- Use Windows Recovery Console

If you have a Windows Installation Disc, it's easy to fix NTDETECT Failed issue.

Do as written below:

1. Reboot computer and change boot sequence to make CD-Rom as the first boot device, insert Windows CD/DVD and restart again.

2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

3. In Recovery Console, type the Administrator password (blank by default, so just press ENTER).

4. Execute following commands. Assuming the CD/DVD drive is D: and the system drive is C:. Change them according to your case.

copy d:i386ntldr c:

copy d:i386ntdetect.com c:

5. If an invalid boot.ini error message is prompted, you also need to create a boot.ini file by type in bootcfg /rebuild, and hit ENTER.

Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All) - Type Y.

Enter Load Identifier: - Type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition for your selection in the boot menu.

Enter OS Load options: - Leave it blank, just press ENTER].

6. Take out the CD and type exit before pressing ENTER, and reboot the computer.

OR

If you don't have a windows installation CD or CD/DVD Rom, then do as below:-

1. Create bootable CD/DVD or USB drive with Liveboot on a booted Windows computer.

2. Insert the CD, DVD or USB drive, and reboot your computer.

3. Choose "Boot from LiveBoot" on the Boot Menu to enter the virtual system.

4. Select "Windows Recovery" and click Boot File Recovery to fix NTDETECT.com failed error.

5. When Boot File Recovery complete, restart your computer.

6. If no other issue, the NTDETECT Failed error should be fixed, and you can then see your familiar desktop.

But i wanna inform you one thing, Whenever you downgrade your OS like windows7 to winXP, so please it's highly recommended to wipe clean the hard drive before installing any downgrade Windows, Because sometime you may find out some drivers only support some Windows.

I think this might help you.:D

I do have Windows Vista bootable CD but wish to install Windows 7 for which dont have anything on hand now.
Any clue?
EDIT:- Installed Vista finally. MS Anti Virus installation cant perform. Message appeared: Internet or connectivity problem. I checked all ok. What would be issue?

I also wish to boot Win 8 with Vista which already installed. How? Pl advice stepwise as i'm noob.

don't get too much worried about MS anti virus/defender instead use some better 3rd party Av app like Avira/Avast.

You can't boot Win 8 with Vista which already installed - for this you need to use a VM software like VMware/Virtualbox but if you want you can dual boot with win vista and win 8 installed on the HDD .. you have installed vista, now just install winows 8. Upon successful installation win 8 bootloader will give you the option to choose the OS to boot with so you can choose any OS you would like to use and you will get this option with every restart ;)

fine, but I regularly using MS AV only and hence familiar with.

Is bootable CD-Win 8 required here? Can it be not download directly online?

^ where are you getting windows 8 from? If you're not buying it you won't get a legit copy. Ex. Torrents or cracked version downloads from sites other than Microsoft.

If buying it, you will get the 32 & 64 bit version DVDs. You can then use the DVD to install windows 8 on another partition or another hdd separate from vista boot disk.

@ op - win 8 exactly is not a great os so you better start with win 8.1 preview release first... you can download the preview version from here :

There are many reasons why a product key might not be valid :-
1. you are typing a wrong key.
2. The other reason is the key which given to you is not matching to your windows.

Installed MS Vista from legit DVD (came with office Dell laptop) before 3 weeks. Everything went well since and suddenly I could not boot-logon PC yesterday with appearing message that "The Windows Microsoft Vista business product key you typed is invalid for activation". Wondering how this, as I have not tried anything while log in and also used legit copy only!

EDIT:- Above message also gives 3 options

1. Acess your computer with reduced functionality
2. Contact Dell to help resolve this problem
3. Type a different product key

I tried all 3 above. Option-1 & 2, I searched a lot but in vain. In option-3, tried the key given on overleaf of DVD but failed.

I could access internet as well open all drives (soft and hard-both).
Problem is both-windows and desktop was disappeared.

Ok bro,

http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2062/vista_activation_slmgr_command_options_explained/

I can say you have to definitely try the "slmgr -dli" then "slmgr -xpr". If that tells you the same thing, then try replacing the key with the one on the case ( the command is there in that link ) and check again. Also try the "rearm" if all that fails. I cannot see why it would fail as you have the key installed already.

I don't think he can activate vista now. Even phone activation won't work so late. vista support is already ended by now.
Last time I tried windows activation it asked for 64 digits to be typed on phone, and this was for windows 8. Windows vista had less no of digits I suppose.

The first step itself failed, couldn't open Win+R key to type further command.

I have been also adviced to download http://50ftwares.com/adw/1231 It seems unreliable as having instruction like this::woot:

The download will be executed through a download manager called installCore that belongs to ironSource. The mentioned download manager doesn´t have any relationship with the author. What to do? Ain't I uninstall Vista & reinstall by using same legit-DVD? or win 7 directly from MS site?

Please don't install any of that crap on your PC. Can't you just buy a windows 8 license from somewhere and not go through all this hassle of activating pirated copies of windows on your PC? If you can't buy windows 8 or feel the price is to high for home use, just download Ubuntu or Debian which are as good as windows and have all software like open office and media players for them.
