One of my PC's refuses to boot up all of a sudden. Just hibernated XP one evening and the next day it refused to come up, nothing extraordinary happened in between. It starts up but there is no beep + POST. Not had any problems with this PC in a long time, so its curious whats happening now :(

P3, Mercury KOB 819 DSMT, with 256MB RAM. Its connected to the UPS so there were no surges that could have done anything untoward as other devices off it still work fine.

So i pulled the memory out as well as the HD IDE cables on the mobo and pulled the monitor connection too. Still the same. The fans on the CPU & PSU come on so that leads me to think the PSU is ok, its an Intex 400W model which replaced the older 250W one so its not at all overloaded.

I tried swapping in different memory cards but that did not make any difference either.

Reset the CMOS, nothing. I dont think a dead CMOS battery would prevent a POST. There is an add-on NIC card but dont think that could affect things either.

That leaves either the CPU or mobo. I'm not sure how to tell where the problem is.

I have come across systems that would not boot into bios but one day just out of the blue starts working again. The most you can do now is take everything out, clean it and put it back it back in and see if that gets it going. In the end, CPU's are tough babies, put the MB through the test first.

This has happened once or twice with this sytem but it was long time back. Its given years of service without issue.

put the MB through the test first.
How to do this ?

See, that's the tough part. You need a spare CPU+RAM to test it. Like i said before, the only thing you can do NOW is to take everything out, clean it, put it back in and see if that works.

Try to take out cmos battery and put it back after some time, see if it works else change the battery also try flashing u r bios by jumper on u r mobo. Take out ram and clean it using eraser.Do the mobo check test to see if there is anything wrong with mobo, take out ram and switch on pc if any beep sound comes then mobo is fine.Even i had the same issue some days back but after some time pc started but it gave cmos cheksum error on every cold start so i use to shutdown the pc without switching off the main power, after 5-6 days everything was normal again.

That's right. Some systems give a beep when you start it minus the ram. I doubt if a P3 can do that though.

Tried this, battery still has a tingle to the tongue so its not dead. I've had the system startup before even tho the CMOS battery was dead. Certainly boot up.

Tried this no go.

Done and also with other RAM alternating between the two RAM slots.

It died on saturday, i've been starting it up once a day since and no go yet.

DO the following:

1) check all the connections whether the system is getting any power

2) Try without the UPS, direct into the power socket

3) Test SMPS to check if its actually suppling current to mobo(you can use a multimeter)

Now try powering on,

if still does not work then something is wrong with mobo. get that repaired/replaced
