as everyone knows, intel's new penryn processors will be out soon. does it mean current core 2 duos and quad cores will be become obsolete or its just another intel's marketing gimmick???:D Will the prices of c2d fall as and when penryn processors comes out??

thanx

Intel will replace current series, eg Q9300 2.33GHz will replace Q6600 2.4Ghz. E8200 will replace E6750, search forums for model details, Intel pricing will be same ie. 163$, 183$, 266$, 312$, 500$, 999$ etc.

Its not marketting gimmick, New CPUs r amazing overclockers and U also know less TDP, power consumption.

Intel will introduce new CPUs in value segment, rumours abt Allendale Quads and E5XXX series. and E2200 etc.

so, i guess e6550 equivalent of penryn will remain around 6.9k??

how much do i have to wait for these penryn processors??

Yes
Q1 2008

If U r going to overclock CPU then settle on E2140 M0 stepping, it costs 2.4k, amazing chip OC to 3GHz and it will give U performance equal to an E6750 (stock). and sit tight, wait for penryn.

OT but Penryn is also C2d only you are confusing the codes :

Conroe was the earler core, penryn is the die shrink of Conroe...

Depends on what software u use, wont see any noticeable jump in games, but ripping videos or encoding u'll have a difference. also its the die shrink and the high cache that matters. its a overclockers wet dream.

but think the Q9300 has gt a 7 multi only :P compared to the 9x multi on a Q6600. many might argue but its very diff to keep things cool & stable above 450FSB for 24X7 reliable use. So the oc on a Q9300 will be quite limited by the multiplier of 7.

Higher end models with 8x & 8.5 multi will cost upwards of 310$ ...so who has the big bucks can wait :P

^^ When they will be launched internationally Intel products are available in India within 3-4 days of international launch

1. is it worth waiting for new penryn procy?? considering the fact that i will b using it for everything....coding/gaming/entertainment :D

2. is penryn compatible with current genre of mobos or do i have to buy another one :(

3. most important...when is going to be lauched

1. Yes when the launch is so near its worth waiting for it....considering u have a budget of at least 15k if you are planning to go for the Quad with a decent multi

2. Its compatible with current P35, X48 and some Nvidia chipsets as well

3. Launch is in January middle...so expect it to land in India max by Jan end :)

but my budget is around 6k-7k only :( should i go for e6550/e6750

1. i would say absolutely, C2Quad has 582Million transistors, now compare that to 820Million Transistors, thats quite a huge jump, also Considering the their TDP and overclockable headroom, u wont be disappointed.

2. If your mobo supports 45nm Processors yes it would.

3. Next month Probably.

i have ol' school p4 1.6 ghz  so, im willing to wait if penryn is that good. only thing i doubt is about its price...as intel alwayz overprice their new launches:bleh: i just hope this is not the case this time

As far as gaming is concerned remember that 30fps is minimum playable framerate. So combined with a 8800GT, either of the C2DE6750 or Q6600 will do.

Future games will increasingly use multiple threads so Q6600 may be a wise investment now. Higher power requirement by quad might be an issue too.

how much power penryn will consume as compared to Q6600. dont want my psu to fry just becos of new processor :)

here is what im goin to buy:

8600gt + E6750/Penryn (whichever is less expensive :)) on CM 600W
