so i dug out my old old pentium III 650 mhz , now i guess i can run ubuntu server edition on it .... is there any other better server s/w i can run on it ? or ubuntu takes the cake?

You should be easily able to run a graphical environment on that. I once played Unreal Tournament on a similar computer with 128 MB of RAM, but with an older version of Red Hat.

Also, if you do want a real snappy graphical environment, you should try Athene. You'll be amazed by how responsive your computer is. You can install it on a server install of Ubuntu, if you prefer.

all ubuntu version require atleast 256mb RAM..

and since this is ur old comp, it might have 128 mb RAM..

however even if they recommend atleast 256 mb of RAM the performance is not decent. so it is always better to have more than the minimum requirement like 512 mb Ram or greater.

if u want to run a server edition, any other linux distro like opensuse, parsix etc.... will be more suitable

u can surely obtain better performance in these versions than ubuntu( thts only because of ur config)...

try this site, it will surely be helpful

DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.

it has the list of linux distros. u can choose accordingly...

The 256 MB RAM requirement is for the Ubuntu Desktop installation, Sanjeet. Ubuntu 8.04 will run on 128 MB RAM. As a matter of fact, I used to use a Pentium III 750 Mhz, w/ 128 MB RAM as a torrent server, backup server and minimal http server. The best part is that with Enlightenment DR17 or Fluxbox, this computer can run a very usable graphical environment on 128 MB RAM.

You can easily run old versions of Firefox, too.

yes running it headless , will use it as a downloader , file server and to play music with its speakers under my bed :P
