90K+ Performance laptop for longevity with good build quality

  • Will be using it for Small office/home office purpose, looking for good performance
  • Not intent on spending 90k+ if there is a good VFM option below that amount
  • 15 inch or above screen size. Lightweight (< 2 kg) is preferred unless good reason for higher weight (chassis design, cooling etc.)
  • Have been using HP for over 11 years. Have another basic laptop of Dell at home as well. Now looking for other brands like Lenovo, Asus... (unless a great option in HP/Dell exists)
  • Core i7 or Ryzen 7 5700/5800...
  • 16 GB RAM
  • SSD
  • Looking for a very good build which should last long. Trying to avoid heating issues, previous laptop's ATI Radeon GPU eventually gave up most probably due to heating problems
  • Good quality hinges
  • Top firing speakers would be good, but not mandatory
Considering Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 82LN00A3IN or 82FG0148IN. But many have reported issues with the hinges
Another option is Lenovo ThinkBook 15 20VE00JUIN. But nobody except Amazon seems have it in stock. Is it an old model?
Is it worth visiting the shops instead of online? Should I wait a few months for the stocks to get replenished?

Models you have suggested are already pretty good but here are a few options



Now for the rational choice for office work, the HP hands down is the best budget pick. Now if you want something more beefier the ideapad slim is good no doubts about. The hinge issues were a major concern on several legion laptops but the ideapad series have faired well.
I wouldn't get anything with a 4 core processor in a laptop in 2021 and that's what the i7 in the budget you suggested has, so I would suggest you stick with AMD.

On the higher range I suggested the Zephyrus purely for the power, screen and portability but the lack of a webcam can be a hinderance too.

Personally if I had to choose I'd get the HP, do a RAM upgrade when and if necessary as otherwise it ticks all boxes

HP option you suggested is interesting. Though it has 14 inch screen, and Ryzen 5 5500U. Is there any other option with 15 inch screen and Ryzen 7 5800? Gaming laptops look unnecessarily beefier for my purpose. I would definitely consider a VFM option though. Also, webcam would be required for sure :)

I'm looking for longevity. Will quite possibly be not upgrading/changing the laptop for next 5 years or so...

The 15 inch version, of the HP laptop is mentioned with the six core processor. Now going to basics. An 8 core processor is absolutely wonderful for quite a few workflows no doubts about that. Have linked the Flipkart thing as the Flipkart version was slightly cheaper (you can even try during the big billion sale etc to
Get a better deal) but for regular office stuff (tally, work, power point etc) the six core processor can be fairly sufficient (provided streaming is not thrown in and then the conversation becomes entirely different). But if you really need the power of the eight core processor (only if you open far too many tabs, the applications open could be Bloomberg, ThinkorSwim, chrome etc) the 5700u is a better option than a 5800u and hey 16gb ram is already there. Would recommend a fresh windows install however as soon as you receive the laptop (a little bit of tinkering can do wonders) to get rid of all the Lenovo crap and bloatware.

Have noticed that none of them are bothered with the display specs . IMHO .. I would look for a nice screen with 400 nits brightness , IPS and a 4k display . Would not be bothered if it came with a celeron processor .

Look at the displays on all those laptops HP is 250 nits, Lenovo is 300 nits, you are not going to get a HDR 400 in the right budget. The IPS factor is something which is used everywhere on almost all laptops now. If he plans on using the laptop for multiple workloads and a longer time the specs are always to go for. I don't know what world you live in to suggest a person a Celeron processor which literally is a dual core dual thread processor with a 4k display, a processor which will have a hard time driving that display. Not to mention on 15 inches you would want a 2K display but a 1080p display pretty much ticks all the right boxes. The OP isn't a video editor/photo editor to even ask for such a display.

Next time I'd really suggest visiting those links go through the specs and understand whether the laptop is WORTH IT or NOT for the user before commenting.

When i tried researching for a friend of mine , I realised that Apple laptops win hands down on the screen and price point comparison . I wish that APPLE continue with their intel based line side by side .

I was not implying the OP to buy a celeron . My post was merely on the lines of choosing a right laptop . A lot of laptops ,low end come with TN panels . There are models across all laptop manufactuers who use TN and IPS panels on a same model .200 nits does not work for bright outside light, at well lit places like airports and it get difficult due to the screen size and the font size . The gamma levels are also insane . The entry level point laptops do not carry an uniform light . It could be 320 nits on one area and 200 Nits at one end . The display panels are manufactured cheap . My suggestion would be a matt display .

That was a strong suggestion . Will keep that in mind . Over the years I might have lost the idea of "looking " for specs vs "what" actually makes the requirement for a nice ownership experience .

In 2021 you wont find TN panels on the new launches above the price bracket of 50000, please check the suggestions given across, as for high brightness, its always a welcome factor but never the only factor especially in an airport.

@xkcd0137 has given a good choice of laptops. The Thinkpad is particularly better than any other suggestion mostly due to the upgradability factor and maintenance (you cant upgrade the RAM on the yoga). The OP specifically asked for a 15 inch screen with 16GB ram, so catered my suggestions accordingly later on.

Also a Macbook is not for everyone this is coming from a person who had a 15 inch Macbook Pro 2017 with all the bells and whistles. Many applications just need windows or work well with windows, take premiere, access, macros on excel, bloomberg terminals etc. Bootcamp was the best thing out there but even then there used to be a lot of throttling/ unoptimised fans while using normal tasks.

These are good suggestions. Although I'd prefer to go for 16 gb RAM... just don't wish to bother with an upgrade later on. And 15 inch screen as you suggested...

I've been considering workstations of Lenovo as well, but the 15 inch options get into the price range of 2 lakhs. I don't think it's necessary to spend this much for my use case

Edit: further expanding on the colorful discussion, 100% sRGB would be really good, but not really needed for me. For my usage, and for a 15 inch screen, I highly doubt whether there would be any significant difference between 1080p or 2K or 4K display. Please correct me if I'm wrong

It has a so-dimm ram and hence should be upgradable upto 20GB but that i7 is a dud against ryzen's offerings.

IMO, the one you have linked in your 1st post is the best bet though. Regarding Hinge issue, I suggest you buy extended warranty for 3 years minimum. Most of the issues usually crop up within first 2 years so you shouldn't get many surprises after 3rd year -

The consumer laptops , gaming ones do not have magnesium or metal frame bodies . Only the Latitudes , Thinkpads , Probooks sport metal frames . The hinges by themselves are solid . The body to which the hinges are fixed are the problem .

A 1080p display is good enough . But , even IPS panels which are lower end ones come with useless gamma ,black levels and back lighting which are sometimes worse than a TN panel .

Thanks @yugaaa. I have been using Core i5 for the past few years and would really like an upgrade this time. Similarly, looking for 16 GB RAM to be at least somewhat future proof. Also a screen size of 15 inches...

Different gen i5 differ in performance but given stagnant performance increase of intel the performance increase might be subtle but if the i5 is of different tdp (y<u<h<hk) generally u will see much better performance. i5 10600h will perform better than quadcore y , u and newer h i7 .....so pleas keep that in mind
