CPU/Mobo Phenom II Info thread

Will there be a big performance loss for one of these processors on an AM2(I've an M2NPV-MX) mobo as compared to the AM3's? I was planning on getting a processor+gfx upgrade in 4-5 months, maybe once the next gen gfx cards get released.

Also from the benchmarks the 710 seems to be an even better vfm alternative to the 720 as it is about 20% cheaper and still very close in terms of performance.

^^Nope there aren't much performance difference.. Get a solid 790 FX for better headroom for OC..

Please note that AM3 currently available is nothing but a modified 790 series board with DDR3 and AM3 support.. Am3 processor won't do wonder with it , but Rs880 or 880D might do some performance difference b/w AM3 and AM2+ ..

Speaking of the 720BE processor, I have to say this little jewel is currently my favorite bang for the buck processor. I have had an absolute blast testing this processor and when overclocked, it truly takes on a "devil with a blue dress" persona. I highly suggest you take a serious look at this processor if you are in the market for an upgrade right now. Anyway, we will be back shortly with our first results and some additional details about the AM3 platform.

AnandTech

Add in the X3 720's fairly tame power consumption, its apparently excellent overclocking proposition, and the fact that—regardless of memory type—the Phenom II has a superior system architecture to the Core 2, and the E8400 starts to look rather weak by comparison. The Phenom II X3 720 is our new favorite among mid-range PC processors. Look for it to secure a place in one of the builds in our upcoming system guide refresh.

The memory bandwidth will obviously be affected, also the big draw for the 720 is the unlocked multipliers, doing wonders when its overclocked.

Coupled with the fact that AMD based mobos are easy to come by and at a much attractive rates.. this is gonna be a killer combo... Heh some option other then the grossly over priced Intel proccies !!! :)

AMD Phenom II X4 940 Subzero Overclocking Test: 6Ghz Obtainable

"Wohoow ... awesome". That's my first reaction when AMD published their first overclocking results of the 45nm Phenom II; not only because they showed frequencies way above 6GHz, but mainly because they eliminated the cold bug issue, which was the plague of every Phenom ánd Intel cpu in the recent past. In Las Vegas, during the CES event, the people of AMD teamed up with SF3D and Sampsa from Team Finland to perform the world's first overclock on Liquid Helium, which has a boiling temperature around -269°C, only four °C above the absolute zero point. Effectively, they were able to run the CPU at -232°C, resulting in a 6.3GHz 3D stable CPU.

When the first series of official AMD Phenom II reviews was released we could finally find out if the results obtained by the AMD team at CES was repeatable or not. We went through almost 30 reviews of the new Phenom II X4 940 but were quite disappointed by the overclocking tests which were almost solely focused on air-cooling. Time to complete the testing; I teamed up with Belgian LN2 OC guru Blind_Ripper, got 30L of LN2 and set up the following system to check the true overclocking limits of the Phenom II:

THATZ great. if DDR3 prices are going down, will be cool to have a PII-925 with DDR3

Ars techinca review of AMD AM2+ based Phenom II :p AMD 2009 performance preview: taking Phenom II to 4.2GHz - Ars Technica

Phenom II 940 @ 4.2 even beats Core i7 :p
Make no mistake, I like AMD's new 45nm Opteron and Phenom II CPUs immensely. They're competitive at their current price points and as we've seen here, they've got overclocking headroom to spare. According to AMD, retail parts actually OC better than the press sample we received; a different chip might have hit 4.4-4.6GHz. I feel comfortable saying that I agree with the positive commentary from other reputable websites—Phenom II puts AMD back on the map, and gives the company a competitive solution against Core 2 Quad for the first time in several years. Thanks to Phenom II, AMD's second-generation Dragon platform is a very good choice for gamers or anyone who wants decent integrated performance for now with the ability to step up later.

Today, right now, Deneb is great, especially for gaming. AMD could conceivably relaunch a gaming-centric Phenom II FX chip without watching it get laughed off the market (provided it was relatively cheap). Down the road, things don't look even half so certain. Even if Deneb picked up an additional 15 percent performance clock-for-clock right now, it still wouldn't be enough to put the chip on an even footing clock-for-clock with the Core i7-965. That's a problem AMD has to solve on a shoestring budget in the worst economic conditions we've seen in decades. Good luck.

^^OMG :O Thats even cheaper that what Techshop selling right now :D

My friend is going to Lamignton this week,so he might check the prices there.I expect it to be around 7.5-8k as it has probably reached in the market by this week:)

Looks as though AMD's Phenom II X4 955 CPU is finally getting a street date: April 20

It's no secret that AMD's quad-core AM3 Phenom II is expected to hit the market in April, and for weeks--possibly months--speculations and rumors have been tossed around like a hot potato, dictating exactly when the flagship processor will actually appear. At this moment, the April 20 date may still be only speculation, but this report seems confident in its forecast, and hopefully, it rings true.

The current reigning Phenom II X4 champion, the AM2+-based 940 released back in January, offers a nice core speed of 3 GHz, 2 MB (4x 512 KB) of L2 cache, 6 MB of L3 cache, and a TDP of 125W. However, come next month, the 955 will become the top dog of the quad-core Phenom II family, offering a faster clock speed of 3.2 GHz--a 200 MHz increase over the previous 940 processor. Additionally, the new processor will also bring to the table AM3 socket compatibility, and support for dual channel DDR2 and DDR3 memory. However, everything else--L2, L3, TDP and 45nm processing--will remain unchanged.

Originally, the 3.1 GHz Phenom II X4 950 was scheduled to hit the market in Q2 2009, however AMD scrapped the idea, and decided to go forward with the 955 version instead.

Hmm no one's got an X3 720 yet here on TE, I am looking closely at the Pi leader charts, not even a single AMD proccy in the list.. (hopefully X3 would make it) :p

SuperPI is a Intel favoring benchmark.. Doesn't suite AMD but you get 14 sec score with Phenom II X4@ 4ghz , even X3 can do that :)

AMD did a 8-9secs bench with 6.5ghz on LN2 :p

Athlon X2 7850 BE to launch on 23rd
AMD is planning to launch its latest addition to Athlon X2 family, and the new CPU, will be an unlocked Black Edition and will work at 2.8GHz.

This is likely to be the fastest Kuma, 65nm K10 derived dual core and after this one, AMD moves to Regor 45nm K10.5 based dual-core.The new CPU is Back Edition and AMD obviously wants to capture as much of this overclocking market as it possibly can, as people with dual-core budgets do like to push unlocked CPUs a bit more.

The new CPU launches on the 23rd of April and has 2x512KB L2 cache and 2MB L3 cache, and we can only hope that the next CPU will get AMD dual-cores to over 3GHz, but this won’t happen before very late Q2.

Phenom II X4 925 listed in HP desktop
A German retailer is listing HP's Pavilion p6060, a mid range desktop based on AMD's upcoming Phenom 925 CPU.

We already said that the 920 and 940 won't stick around for long, and that they would be replaced by AM3 versions, the 945 and 925.

The clocks and other specs stay the same, 2.8GHz, 4x 512 KB of L2 Cache and 6 MB shared L3 Cache, but the new CPUs support DDR3, although they will work with AM2+ boards and DDR2 memory.

The retailer expects to have the new Pavilion in stock on May 14, so it seems it won't launch on April 23rd like several AMD CPUs we already talked about.

Athlon X2 45nm to get to 3GHz in June

AMD has Athlon X2 250 in plans and this Regor 45nm SOI based CPU should get to 3GHz in June 2009. This is the scheduled launch for AMD and this CPU will have 65W TDP, while the previous Athlon X2 7750, 7550 and soon to launch 7850 have a 95W TDP, which is quite high for any dual-core.
Regor has 2MB cache and supports 1333MHz memory. The catchy detail is that AMD might be able to push over 3GHz with dual-cores and surprises us with a higher clock speed, but at this time, there are not talking about it.

Regor SOI 45nm dual-core will also get at least two energy efficient editions, slower clocked parts that will end up with a 45W TDP. Intel already has its dual-cores at clocks up to 3.33GHz and this should be enough for Intel to keep the performance crown in this segment, but we do believe that price per performance ratio will be on AMD’s side.

Phenom II X4 955 3.2GHz BE to launch of the 23rd

AMD plans to launch the Phenom II X4 955 that will work at 3.2GHz and this will be the fastest Phenom CPU to launch to date.

It gets better, it is socket AM3 and it supports DDR2 and DDR3 motherboards. The joy for all overclockers this one is again one Black Edition CPU and it looks that USA will pay about $300 for the CPU while Europeans should cash some €250 for a new one in etail.

There will be two versions boxed for retail and tray for OEMs and system integrators and due to its aggressive price and performance for the money, AMD hopes for a big success.

The Thermal Design Power (TDP) of this CPU is 125W and it should be available for purchase on April 23rd.

I wonder what made AMD produce X2 7850 BE :p Maybe thats last tribute to Kuma and 65nm technology from AMD :p an E5200 counterpart :bleh:

Finally we going to have X4 955 and 925 soon :D

Finally the listing in AMD Site
