The Philips DVP5100K/69 is a slot-loading player, just like the Mitashi 999. The only difference is that this one looks so much better, the Mitashi is actually an ugly duck in front of this. This is the player you have to look at if you're looking to add one to your existing setup of hi-end audio equipment. Everything else looks all shiny and sleek, and the Philips 5100K fits right in. The player puts out the disc putting the hole out of the center so its easier to take it out than it is on the 999. It takes a while for the player to recognize a disc, and it also takes a while for it to respond to the eject button. If you turn the player on, you have to wait for it to load the contents before you can eject it.

The Philips DVP5100K/69 plays DVDs, VCDs, SVCDs, audio CDs, MP3 or WMA, Kodak Photo CDs or JPEG picture discs and of course DivX. The player is also DivX Certified, which means you will never have any problems with video that's encoded with the official DivX codec. The certification aims to guarantee playback of all DivX video content reliably and consistently, ensure that the devices play back the content at a high level of overall quality and also make it easy to create DivX content that is guaranteed to play on other DivX Certified devices. The Mitashi players (both the 555 and the 999) are not DivX Certified, but they actually ended up playing more formats than the Philips 642 - I'm just saying that the logo doesn't mean a lot to me.

The 5100 also plays back XviD content. This model of the Philips also has official support for Quarter Pixel (QPEL) motion compensation and global motion compensation (GMC). We ran our regular set of movies with the player, and it played them all without giving any "unsupported" errors. We tried all the formats on all different kinds of media (DVD+R/-R, DVD+RW/-RW, CD-R/RW) and all the formats were supported. However, we noticed a lot of ghosting incidents at several positions within the movies. Even the non-QPEL/GMC encoded single-file movies showed this behaviour. We thought it could be because of the quality of the media we used to test it on, but we used the exact same set of discs on the earlier players that didn't give any problems. So we can say that the lens of the 5100K isn't as good as the earlier ones, at least in this piece. The player seemed to oddly play back some video very choppily, that we figured had something to do with packed bitstream video encoded at 23.976 fps.

The player supports DivX/XviD subtitles in the .srt, .smi, .sub, .ssa and .ass formats. The files have to be named in the same way as the movie files. The manual mentions that the subtitle button on the remote can switch the language for DivX movies that offer multi-language subs, just like the DVDs.

Blade & TechHead , i know u will reply here. ;)
- Ne idea which chipst does this have
- Also can this be made region free

After seeing this player , I just remembered the Philips DVP642K Review i had
written , so this is the max info i could find about this player as i am sharing it with you.

For Rs 4750 looks a gr8 offer as a Divx DVD Player , much better than Mitashi 999

Nothing new the dvp5100 is named 5106 for the Asian countries. I suggested Ragin_Ice to go ahead and get this. There is another player on the block the Videocon DVD77S4 which does everything that this player does and cost just around 3k. :)

Yesterday morning I left home for Lamington road with 5k in my pocket with the idea that I would buy the Philips 5106 DVD player but on the way I stopped at APEX and looking at the Vantec USB case I liked it so much that I bought that instead :D

Videocon too has a divx dvd player didnt knew.

Ne idea abt the chipset and if this can be made region free.

Mostly the mtk 1389 chipset, ff or fe. Region free shudn't be much of a problem, most dvd players on shelf are region free now-a-days.

lol @ eazy.

Its the DVP5106K/97 which is available here in India rightly mentioned on the philips website, the MRP is 4990/- and sells for about 4800 or 4700 , i got it for 4700 locally here in vashi .

Its a great player, the "/97" gives out the firmware number , suggesting that its the latest . When i checked the box , it was imported from china in the month of september ( its made in china ) and i had purchased it in october.

Its very sleek looking , the slot loading system works great , its got a velvet kinda slot protection which swipes off the dust from the CD/DVD .

About format compatibility , it plays everything u throw at it . It lags a lil while playin a movie encoded in packed bitstream but its easily remedied by using the mpeg4modifier , it hardly takes 5 mins , just unpack the movie and burn it .The size doesnt change , and the divx movie previously fitting the 700 MB mark still fits on the CD ( therez no noticable change in size after unpacking ) .

I use the component out and trust me the image quality is phenomenal ! .
THe remote is good , buttons well laid out . No qualms as of now .

This is one b**ch which looks killer and plays about everything u throw at it .
After i got it , i have never watched a movie again on the comp , they look so much better and different on the philips .

I knew about this players Region 5 lock and that was the only reason I let it slip thru ... I know its possible to flash Region free firmwares for these type of DVD players but I said WTF will I do if Mr Murphy knocks at my door and tells me that this is the only DVD Plaver which has a PUCCA region locking mecanism - so I thouhgt wait and see what the guys at TE say about region freeing this player before buying it. Man - I dont watch Bollywood movies at all. Region 5 makes it a very expensive paper weight for me.

well the dvp642k id prefer over thi s and getting it 2 be region free is easy jus google around a bit,ive done it for a few friends, have 2 have the tray out and then punch 2-3 no.s on the remote and ) wil show up on the screen which means its region free ;)
the tray loading one should be cheaper, tehy play subtitles too so a good buy,as for the videocon and the mitashi, i wouldnt backup the build quality so it may start givin u problems after sometime, only disadvantage is it doesent play qpel and gmc
which the vvideocon does play but then again not many go around enconding so and the videocon doesent play teh old divx 3.11 encoded files so if u have a fairly old collection get the philips

Conclusion:id backup on going for philips since many yrs my friends have been using it abroad and not a single problem,gr8 player

Err why would would you choose to go for a dvp 642 over the 5100

The 642 is equipped with ess vibratto chipset which is actually half assed when it come to playing playing media with different encoding patterns and settings such as qpel and gmc. The 5100 as well the videocon player on the other hand are equipped with the mediatek chipset which are compatible with all different method and patterns of media except packed bitrate ones which can unpacked in 2 seconds. About the divx 3.11 playback a small modification of the firmware or flashin the videocon with the newest mtk firmware should do the trick.

Well even though videocon is an Indian company i have qualms about the build quality of the products. It's a myth probably that the build quality is substandard on videocon products. That said the warranty is a bit less on the videocon player but then so is the price. There is a price difference of almost 2k.

You can refer to my divx okayer guide http://www.techenclave.com/forums/mini-guide-divx-players-6425.html

I bought this player (DVP5106K) from TMC Hyderabad (4.8 K).

This ofcourse plays almost all formats from Divx to even Xvids.
But I have a strange problem with such kind of files. It plays upto around 35 minutes or so and then freezes. I figured it must be the file size and split the Avi file into smaller segments using VirtualDub and thats the only way i can watch the movies.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I havent had this problem ....... have watched at least 20-25 movies on the player . Check the media your using , i have only used the moserbaer re-writable CD till now .

I have tried it with different Media till now.
Moser Baer CD-R, Sony CD-R , Imation CD-RW , Sony CD-RW, Optimum CD-R.

Initially thought may be there is a problem with the CD Writer.
So tested it with another Extenal CD Writer as well.
But faced exactly the same problem. It plays till about 34-35 minutes only of any movie. These CD's play perfectly on my friends DVP642K.

And the CD Plays without any problem on the comp also fully. I am facing the problem only on this player. (5106K)

Anyways, haven't had any problems with the quality of the player and by splitting the files, I am able to jump to a scene more easily in Divx Movies also. So I am able to live with it. But just wanted to know if others are also facing the same problem.

Well videocon products are as good as anything else out there. I haven't had a single bad experience with their products. I have had a bazooka 25" TV that was bought over 10 years back still running fine and dandy. Have had a videocon VCR (rebadged toshiba... the manual is toshiba as well LOL. bought in the late eighties) thats running fine as well. Of late i got a 29" cheap videocon TV. I was surprised to find an RCA picture tube inside when most others have el cheapo chinese ones. Lets see how that stays alive ;).
