my dad needs a new phone for email. he currently has an ipaq 512 and its a little too complicated for him plus the keyboard is too small for serious typing.
so he needs a new phone with a good keyboard ( preferably QWERTY) and a very user friendly phone.
budget around 15-20k.
ive heard a lot about blackberrys but what advantages do they offer over any other business phone.

when it comes to e-mail, BBs are the king of the hill by far...

one of the most ergonomic keyboards (except for one model) and a responsive interface make it unbeatable when it comes to e-mail

so any phone with a decent keyboard and good emailing software will be as good as a BB?

the e71 has a qwerty keyboard and has email...so is it better than BB considering its a nokia and symbian phone so it will be more user friendly

If all he needs is email and an intuitive interface, then Blackberry pwns anything else easily.

If he wants a good cam and multimedia capabilities, then the E71 is a wiser choice.

The only advantage BB has over other phones in terms of email is its Blackberry Enterprize Servers which if your dad's company doesnt use, makes the whole point of getting a BB moot. The number of compromises one has to make with a BB if youre not using BB's email pushing service is way too high.

^ exactly.. if the phone's primary purpose is emailing, then BB is the obvious choice... however if he needs other features too, the e71 is the way to go

primary rather only purpose is emailing....dad NEVER uses camera or multimedia features.

but what i do need is that it should be user friendly which i know nokias are but have no idea about the BB

and can someone tell me how does blackberry email work and whats Blackberry Enterprize Servers. what advantages does emailing in blackberry have over the others

and one more thing...it should be able to easily sync with pc. somehow i wasnt impressed with Active sync for windows and liked nokias pc suite. hows BB for syncing

the things im looking for

1) good email

2) user friendliness

3) good syncing with pc

emailing everyone says BB is best but what are the advantages. i have no idea of how BB email works

the other 2 points nokia is good . not sure how BB fares on the other 2 points

so if someone can tell me about BB email and its user friendliness and syncing then il think of that too...as of now nokia seems good ( apparently nokia have their own Push email thing in the e71..how good is that as compared to BB)

Im sorry, it isnt the 'Enterprise Server' like i mentioned earlier, but the 'Exchange Server'. The link zhopudey mentioned reflects my sentiments about blackberry's when used by ppl whos companies dont use BB's Exchange Server services.

If you read through the link, you'll get a rough idea about what its used for. But a summary is this:

The company you work for has or is tied up with Blackberry's Exchange servers\services. So all business email, appointments, etc are routed through it. So, say, your boss updates the company calendar and sends and email about an upcoming business meeting, it gets sent through the exchange service to all the employees in the company and updates their calendars\appointments on their phone.

The main advantage the exchange service has over regular IMAP\POP is that its instantaneous and doesnt update only every 15 minutes. hence its used by large businesses which rely heavily on up-to-date info\feedback. I believe even MS has\is developing their own exchange service as well.

incase the only purpose is emailing then nothing beats BB

I reiterate, only if your dad's company is tied up with BB, this sentiment holds true. Otherwise any modern phone with a large screen and a querty keyboard will suffice and is recommended. BB has only recently started working on their interface (usability and speed), and in that respect is relatively new to the game and doesnt hold a flame upto its big brothers like SE or Nokia.

oh well in that case my dad owns the company and im definitely sure we dont use BB or will ever to update the business meetings or company calender it being a small company and not a multinational.

so i guess e71 wins over BB here. how much is it for?

any other qwerty phone that i should look at? my dad will not use any multimedia . he will only need it for calling, sms and email

if you are not going to be using BB's Exchange Server then there is absolutely no point in going for a BB... e71 would then win hands down in that case in all departments
