hi,

i bought a philips dvp-5996 yesterday.

Philips - DVD player with HDMI and USB HDMI 1080p DivX Ultra Karaoke - DVP5996K/94 - DVD Players - Players and recorders - Sound and vision

ive connected the player to a 40" v-series bravia. its an older model and hence only supports upto 720p. i connected the player via hdmi (supplied free these days) and the composite cable too. i inserted an original dvd and first checked the output via hdmi. it was quite pixelated. i checked the hdmi mode, it was on auto. i changed it to 720p and the results were the same. i figured that since auto mode chooses the highest available resolution, it must have been 720p only, hence the same results.

i then switched the tv to the composite mode and found that the results via the composite cable were definately better. i was shocked. is there any way to fix this? am i doing something wrong? ive tried 4:3 pan, 4:3 letter and 16:9.

i meant philips.. can the mods please edit the topic.

I went through the same thing. Here is the solution - Set DVD player output as 1080i over HDMI. That will fix it.

Also please note that if your source itself is pixelated, no upscaling will fix it.

well ur sony tv will be much happier in displaying a 720p signal then a 1080I interlaced signal, since the lcd again will have to converted Interlaced signal back to Progressive.play a proper DVD and see ,not some pirated or heavily compressed movies.

i did play an original dvd as mentioned in the first post. however it was a music concert. ill try with a original movie today.

720p may or may not be better than 1080i based on your setup. Philips is not the best upscaler around, so 720p is visibly pixelated. Had it been a top notch machine like Pioneer, things would have been different.

Descaling of 1080i input to 720p screen is actually very well handled by Sony TV and produces best picture quality possible for SD source. I can vouch for this because this is my personal experience - I have been using Philips upscaling DVD player along with Sony HDTV since past 2 years.

well sony tvs with bravia engine2 have not so good deinterlacers, they don't quite well remove the jaggies that u get in a interlaced signal, only the X series with its bravia pro engine and upcoming S,V,W etc with bravia engine 3have improved quite a bit in deinterlacing department.however sony lcds such as mid range S,V,W have one of the best ,if not the best upscalers in flat panels displays.
btw which sony model do u have.
