when a certain frail old man decided to make his own salt some time back, that was illegal too....

   , Isn't that stretching things too far? How can you equate his actions to comments like I'm not gonna buy at all when I can steal and get away with it???

Just remember, most are not pirating to protest against the music/ movie/ software cartels. Most of them agree they wouldn't pirate if they couldn't get away with it.

Let's be a little kind to the cartels too. They're doing what the pirates are doing. Trying to earn more. Everybody's selfish. The sellers want money, the pirates want it free. Y? To save their money which is not earned with music/ movies/ software. Believe me, if they did earn from the said sources, they'd still pirate but protest when their source of income is pirated.

It's all in the attitude. Laws are meant to be followed only when it agrees with us or when we're penalised for not doing so  ! The rule of law is the first step to a civilised and prosperous state. And if the well to do and educated need severe enforcement to do so, the state becomes dictatorial.

If there's any one person here who honestly pirates to protest against capitalism and unfair practices of the cartels, I bow to you :cool2: !

My last post on TE on piracy. Until the next pirate looking for justifications starts another thread :P !

Not trying to be moral guardian here as I also pirate. But since this is supposed to be my last post in this thread, a few questions and answers.

Am I ashamed cos I pirate? No. Would I stop if I can buy my Blue Rays easily? Yes. Am I proud that I steal what others are buying just because I can? N0. Am I a model citizen? NO. Do I try to be one? Yes. Do I believe that paying for what I use is wrong? No. Do I believe that I have the option for a diff product if the price/ attached conditions of sale are anathema to me? Yes. Do I believe all the bs about piracy as a response to corrupt artists/companies/ software writers and a by product of meagre income?

um, my point is against unreasonable copyright rules.

I dont care if someone wants to download the latest B*chney spears ( or whoever is the latest hit at the charts) song.

I'm talking about the older songs which should have legitimately gone into the public domain.

see Copyright Once Again Being Used To Hinder Culture, Not Enable It | Techdirt for instance.

If, say, shakespeare's works had still been copyrighted, wouldnt mankind have been the worse off for it?

my whole point is , people think that there is some sort of wrong involved here , When you speak of 'getting away with it', remember that it need not be a crime in the first place.

If you steal a cable feed for the last IPL match, I wouldnt feel too much sympathy for the sponsors of the series , or the players who might have lost a few rupees compared to their millions. I would rather have people play cricket because they like it, not because it pays their bills. I would rather people sang, because it makes them and others happy, and not because they have a recording contract.
