Hi all,

I'm planning to buy a new 500 GB / 1 TB internal HDD (Sata 2).

Which one would you recommend me? Which has the better warranty

Pls tell me the details for both 500 GB & 1 TB as well.

Just interested in knowing more to make a decision.

Thanks in advance,

Haridada

In order of priority:

Samsung Spinpoint F3

WD Black 64mb cache

WD Black 32mb/Seagate 7200.12

I recommend a 1 TB drive as you will probably need the space if you are into movies and/or games.

Otherwise 500 GB is good enough but 1 TB will probably have faster options.

The best warranty probably is of Seagate, but I am not too sure.

If spinpoint is available, Idoubt it is, get it, but for other choices in 500GB or 1 TB, there is only one option, the Seagate, 7200.12 series. the fastest and coldest drives to run :)

Which one of the drives do have a longer warranty period?

And a noob question, the capacities mentioned are the unformatted capacities like 500 GB / 1 TB.

What would their formatted capacity be like?

500 GB = ?

1 TB = ?

Thanks again

For 500 GB it would be around 465 GB
and 1000GB it would be around 930 GB
It is like the manufactures consider 1GB = 1000MB instead of 1024MB.

Western Digital has 5 years warranty with free scheduled pick up and drop in case of any issues. I am not sure but segate also has 5 years.

I have 4 WD drives since 3 years and all are fine as on now. One was DOA and it was replaced ad total time it took was 2 weeks.

I guess if you have no issues with Segate then 7200.12 series are faster than WD green series.

OK guys, thanks for all your replies. Now comes the tantalising part.

One and only Purpose is going to be BACKUP PURPOSE.

Recommend me only one drive (1 in 500 GB / 1 in 1 TB) that you'd go with if backup was your only intention.

Thanks people.

I would rely on Seagate in both cases of 500GB & 1TB as I have been using Seagate since 1994 (when I was in Std. III) & never ever I have faced a problem except once when it was replaced withing 2 weeks back in 2007. Seagate all the way, bratha.

Seagate = 3 years warranty

WD (Green and Blue) = 3 years warranty

WD (Black) = 5 years warranty

I trust Seagate as it has been here for a long time while WD is much new player here, although abroad it's equally respected & trusted.

There is some confusion there in the table they say three years and at the end of the table as you have posted says 5

Most of my suppliers say 3 so ... i guess recently purchased WD Drives Owners may be the Best people who can check and tell us i guess

I got a wd green 500gb, it has got 3yrs warrenty. Bought this 5 days back.

Bought another wd 500gb blue 3days back, got 5yrs warrenty.:)

About WD blue series many dealers in lamington road says warranty is reduced to 3 years from jan2010; but if you get little old imported drive you may get 5 year warranty; about 1 month ago i bought 500 gb blue from prime; and there itself i checked warranty and it showed 5 years :)

The drives manufactured till 1~1.5 month ago has 5 yrs while recent productions are all 3 yrs.

best is to check on their site itself before purchasing. Do it using mobile or somethin.
