So i am planing on buying an external HDD 1TB.I am not aware of any of the current models so please can you suggest

Western Digital My Book Home edition 1TB, is good for backup and data dumping purposes. Has USB,Firewire and e-SATA for connectivity :).

It costs around 6.2k.

^Yes, a wise choice. I got my WD essential ITB for 5.3k a few months back. So if you don't need e-sata or firewire, its better you go with the essential edition.

Isn't seagate good ??

Asking because my requirement is same as OP, need a 1TB external 3.5" HDD. Isnt that WD HDD big in size ?? I mean i dont want something which will occupy mammoth space and is also heavy.

both are nearly the same size. neither is very portable. many people would nowdays dont trust seagate and hence the preference for wd.

though from my perspective, with data, you only should backup it to be safe. a disk, any disk can fail anytime. so better be safe.
