I am a beginner and wanna learn how to play a guitar........Please suggest a good guitar for beginners.........I dont know about there pricing but I can shell out upto Rs.4500.

Also do I need to buy anything else with it ?

THANKS!

You need a guitar, tuner, a gig bag and a few picks. A guitar polish and a string cleaner are nice too, and a string winder would be great. And a spare set of strings, a few extra number one and two because beginners tend to snap those two while tuning up. I used a pitch pipe and string winder combination for a long time to tune my guitar and string it up.

As to brand choices, it would depend on what is available in Delhi. The regular Granadas and Plutos should fit your budget, there are quite a few choices. Take a friend along who can play - each guitar is slightly different and you need to get one with good tone, so play a few guitars and pick the one which is set up well and has decent tone.

You could pick a dreadnought, which is the more popular choice due to the better bass response, but I prefer a parlor size instrument for you to learn on, it's easier to train your ear when there is no mud from the larger body. Parlor size instruments tend to be a bit cheaper, though finding a bag small enough to fit it in will be a challenge as most bags are made for dreads.

If you're in delhi, goto Onstage in lajpat nagar, or if you want a musician's heaven then visit Bhragava's at Darya ganj, Buy a semi electric vcaleed ARIANA.I have 6 guitars and its the best out of the lot.About 4-4.5k. Other options include Yamaha or Gba. You just need a varry bag, a tuner, a few plectrums and an extra set of strings for now.All in all about 1.5 k more.If the cover is free with the guitar then subtract about 500 -700 from that.

i live in lajpat nagar !

i suggest you to get an acoustic guitar of aria brand ! it sounds quite nice and will cost around 4k !

you can also get a gb&a guitar with a tuner for rs 4k !

but the aria one sounds a little better ! :)

@buddingwhizkid

I will be coming to Lajpat Nagar to buy, can u help me in selecting a guitar there ? I will give u a treat after i m done buying

Haha.... we have a member from Lajpat Nagar :P I am from Kalkaji. I personally started off on a Yamaha Acoustic guitar... absolutely loved it ! Am now on a Washburn Electric.... dont get much time to play though :(

Best of luck with the purchase and practice well dude...

That Washburn looks good, but you'll have to play it to know if it's a good deal. It is the right size, and may have a solid top, something not available in the price range you are looking at (then again, it may have a plywood top with the top layer in spruce, no way to find out without seeing the guitar).

Used instruments are usually a bargain if well cared for, but a badly kept instrument will be a liability. Don't worry about finish/scratches. You need to check if the neck is straight, how high the action is, wear at the nut or the frets, and the condition of the tuners. In addition check the top and back for signs of warp, and if the guitar still intonates correctly (harmonic and note at 12th fret *have* to match note at open string, some variance in top two strings is OK). If the guy is selling two guitars it's possible he will know a bit about keeping them well. Delhi has high temperatures and warping is a possibility, so ensure you take care of yours and select one that not warped to start with - new or used.

I had bought my friend a GB&A for 3.5K including a bag and a spare set of strings, it sounded pretty reasonable for the price. It didn't sustain as well as the better Waldens that cost 10K+, but it was fine for strumming. Fingerpicking was a little troublesome but I guess one could pull it off with some caveats. The thing is I had to play about 6 guitars in the 2.5 to 4K price band to arrive at one we liked enough to buy. At that price the variations between instruments is quite a lot and picking one out takes some time.

buddy!, as u must have guessed from the above posts.......its not easy to pick a nice "first guitar" there are various intricacies involved which you are better off learning at a later stage..

my 50cents would be to take some guitar player with you to help you out......need not be an expert but someone who has played for sometime will do...

it all gets down to "HOWIT FEELS" and 'HOW IT SOUNDS"....there are no measures as such for these parameters i feel...

i would be more than obliged to help you out if you were in mumbai :(

one advise i can give you is......dont think this first guitsr to be THE guitar.....pick one decent acoustic one for 3-4K and learn on it......then you can always buy THE one!! :)

brands in 3-4K : hobner, givson, granada, pluto (all these are calcutta makes)

granada is awesome , i had the black acoustic sold it for some stupid reasons , but the bass is unmatched to any other acoustic guitar in that price range .

only drawback being , you don't get single strings for replacement and each time you break or change one you need to buy a new set , so that's the only point , otherwise an awesome guitar , that too the black model specifically.

with all due respect to khaleelda1 , dont go for givson or hobner those are fakes.

hey kunal, i know they are fakes but thats the whole point..

i have many friends whose first guitsr is not the right one for them! ........ they end up with a 4-5K piece with frustation of not getting anywhere....

just being a little cost concious and suggeting these...

reasons why to go for cheap ones:

>the dimensions ie the width of neck, the body extra become apparent only after a few months of playing (i dont agree a beginner can judge that in the store in 2hrs)

>the action though adjustable still varies from piece to piece

>the sound!!! every guitar has a unique sound .......and again a beginner CANNOT judge what suits his preference

>actual guitar learning.......i mean common there are thousands of guys who shelf thier guitars within a month or so, mainly because they get frustated by the learning experience or just dont get the time to practice!

hence i suggest to for a low end one and then buy a second one after 3-4months when you will be more informed about the buying process...

to avoid all that take a experienced friend along as i suggested...

i bought a givson recommended by a friend.....turned out to be pretty OK for me....

learned to play myself......within 8 months or so i was able to play a decent number of songs...

heck i even performed live with my givson...heres a link: YouTube - GlobeopAnnualParty2007-Khaleel,Rashmi&Pranesh(handycam ver) :)

tell you what you can take mine for 1K and then buy yours later on....

wat say? :)

there are thousands of guys who shelf thier guitars within a month or so

Amen to that

tell you what you can take mine for 1K and then buy yours later on

If the action is OK, this is actually a very good offer - you can use the beater to figure out if the TS even wants to continue.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies, Its very difficult in getting a fisrt guitar, Its holidays, so most of my friends are out so i dont think i can take anyone with me to test the guitar..............

@khaleelda1

Which guitar do u have ? How will u ship to Delhi ?

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

Also is Yamaha a good choice ?

khaleelda you are not serious with that youtube vid right ? :fear: .... and i get what you meant , even i started off with a givson f-cut :P , but then when i auditioned the granada at my collg that was it , got it the next day , but had to sell :( ... now i'm on an ibanez grg 170dx :D but rarely get time to play

there is no point getting an expensive guitar if one is not sure if he can stick around or not , and starting off with a f-cut is probably a better idea coz it's easier to play compared to the jumbo sized acoustics. how ever for true acoustic guitarring one has to have a jumbo guitar eventually :D and preference wise choose a brand for a more bass lover or more treble etc. i like bass :D

Hi i am selling my gutar but the problem is i m in bangalore and coming to delhi next month july.I purchased it on 1st jun 2010 in 4.5k and i am selling it only for 3k. Its "j & d brothers" branded. If interested then let me know

Thanks buddy, when are u free this week ?

I have the Aria , Washburn, Ariana, Givson *2 . Dude , buy a yamaha or ariana.Nothing else.
Like I said, goto Darya ganj, Bharagavas. Dont buy it from him but ANYBODY WHO IS A MUSICIAN AND IS IN DELHI is missing something in life if he hasnt seen that showroom. He's a a little expensive so I wont suggest you buy from there, Try onstage in lajpat , bharat music also in lajpat and eamesh nagar , or this shop in patel nagar.Under the metro line. Whatever pleases you.
