I'm considering the foll. HP and Canon models for purchase

1) HP Deskjet F4185
2) HP PhotoSmart c4288

3) Canon MP 145
4) Canon MP 228

The Canon models are recently launched. (I guess they replace the MP-160 and MP-180 because I could not find these on the India website yesterday.)

If anyone is using these models, please comment on their performance and issues if any.

Also, suggestions for other models are welcome.

Ooh, here is a review of entry level MFDs. Hope it helps others. It's hard to find decent printer reviews.

PC World India: Affordable All-In-Ones

edit: my Multi Functional Device needs are Print-Scan-Copy only. I don't really need fax.

hey buddy im not using the 4185 but that is the one i would recommend. 2 reasons for it: firstly it comes with onsite replacement warranty so no troubles if it goes kaput secondly it comes with a free additional black cartridge (atleast some packages) so if u plan 2 refill carts then a second black cart comes in real handy as backups..

i posted a similar question, check out my thread:

http://www.techenclave.com/forums/help-need-to-buy-a-printer-100916.html

Anyway,

you haven mentioned your budget..if it's below 6k then forget the HP C4288(6.5k) & the new mp 228(it just launched & priced @ 7.9k)..

and bout the hp 4185,it's a real ink sucker & prone to paper jamming but it does retail for 4.3k.

forget the mp 145..it's a downgraded version of the mp160!

i had finalized on the canon mp 180 & the hp 4185 and ended buyin the mp 180(4.6k),which i don't regret at all!..

way better than the f4185..

the problem with hp(especially) & canon is that they keep lauching new models every few months..making it harder for the customers to choose..

btw,the mp180 is exactly similar to the mp 228..

@amityrock
Thanks. Where do I avail these packages from? I'm planning to get mine from comp ware house b'lore or computer shop b'lore. Will they offer it?

@toxicmind
Hmm...I really had my eyes set on the F4185. So prone to paper jamming eh?? That's something I hate and I've always had this problem with old HP printers(I own an old model HP deskjet 840c in B'bay and I got fed up with the paper jams.) But any idea who has experience this ink sucking problem? I thought this was more a problem with the Epson printers.

Budget..not more than 6K...well maybe upto 8K if the printer is really, really good. Printers are not worth spending on IMO. All of them don't last beyond 3-4 years (unless regularly used) and models keep changing so servicing is a pain. The cheaper, the better. HP C4288 is avbl at comp ware house for 5.5K(at least in their pricelist).

Will look out for the MP180 if it's still avbl. Say...does your MP180 have the copy button for direct scan and print without PC intervention? Also, where do you feed the sheet in for printing in your MP180? From the back or front? I was particularly interested in the HP for this. i.e. the paper loading is just below the print o/p tray.

^^ Fanboism :| Btw Cannon is also very good ...check the price before getting ... Opt for 1 which has same specs but low price compared to counter par. and remember cost of Cartridges is very important Hp cartridges cost too much ...while Cannon a bit low on cost .. Mp160 and Mp180 was awesome so as HP F380 so get the 1 which cost less :D

well iv got no idea bout where in bangalore.. look around in a couple of shops and u might find it. Also if u get 4288 for about 5-5.5k.. might be worth checking out aswell.. cause if u plan to make copies/print pics from memory cards without a comp the screen comes handy..

1.well both the F380 & F4185 or any other deskjet series AIO printer comes with a mere 5ml cartridge which might yield bout 60 copies or more..then there's the head cleaning in all printer which again consumes ink..jus do a google search on any F series deskjet all-in-one and you'll find ppl complainin bout the printer's high ink consumption..HP cartridges costs 800-900 bucks for 5ml & the canon one's 900-1000 for 15ml or so..which believe me is more than enough to last bout 6-7 months, depending on ur usage..
even i had an inclination to the smaller & chic Hp f4185 but finally it was a matter of performance & VFM !!!
2.the canon has paper loading at the back & output tray in the front, autofeeder & the scanning setup is also convenient! and yes it does have separate copy ,scan & mem. card buttons..print has three buttons: black,colour,reset..then there's the lcd & its navigation buttons..which the HP F4185 lacks!
3.the hp psc 4288 is a pretty good photo printer with mem. card slots & a colour display being the key selling aspects..! but performance/speed isn't all that great..if it uses the same hp 21,22 cartridges as the f4185,then might as well stay away..
4.there's no difference b/w the mp180 & the new mp228
Canon in South and Southeast Asia
5.word of advice : don't get lured by the product's looks & fancy features..get something that is tried,tested & performs well !

A comparison of Canon vs HP in the same price bracket shows HP having more features vs the Canon. However, I'm yet to see anyone having bought a Canon printer actually dissappointed with it :hap5: .

HP having more features???? comparison of which models did you see ? don't compare any hp photosmart model with canon's mp160,180&228..photosmart is a different segment so obviously offer a lil more..you ought to compare the F series deskjet with the canon models i've mentioned..

@toxicmind - thanks very much for the detailed information on the Canon models. You're spot on about the cartridges. But, I've read that iin the HP cartridge, the print head is replaced with the cartridge during replacement. So, it's like having a new printer everytime the cartridge is replaced??:S . I'm not so sure abt this.

My printer usage per month will be like 3-4 pages. I just want a printer for emergencies. But I so wanna get the Canon. The brand speaks quality(even their website is 10 times better than HP). We've a Canon in the office and it's amazing. No paper jams at all. Was never the case with HP printers.

The front paper loading is a big sell at home as space in my room is limited(I've gotta keep this printer in my brother's study room and not near my comp. Printing will be via his laptop.) and there is not much room at the back to load the paper. Plus, my family and I feel that the Canon MP-160/180 are a bit ugly. They want something cute :ashamed: . I must see how the new MP145 & MP228 models look.

Oh btw...if anyone else is interested, here are quotes for the models I received from Computer Shop Brigade Road, B'lore.

Canon MP 145 - 3,900/-
Canon MP 228 - 4,600/-
Canon F4185 - 4,700/-
Canon c4288 - 5,750/-
Zebronics Bijli w/o SMPS Rs 1,150/-

The 1.5 inch LCD on the c4288 is not a big sell for me. 1.5 inch is so small anyway. And I don't plan to print photos without retouching them (esp red eye correction). So direct printing via PictBridge is also not very important to me.

ugly? well the mp180's colour is unattractive but it sure ain't ugly.it's desgined really well & thoughtfully !

if its looks your after ,then go ahead with the F4185..ITS CUTE & ITS WHITE!

or the mp228..thin that looks better than the mp180 but no idea bout its performance..

Canon F4185 - 4,700/-

it's a std 4.3k here in chennai..it's cheaper than the mp180!

Sorry for the late update. Well I went to the dealer confused. I mentioned that everyone was recommending Canon. But the dealer said that Canon service is still questionable. So I finally got the HP F4185.

It seems ok so far. It comes with an additional black cartridge although the introductory cartridge capacities are pathetic....3 ml capacity only and the damn HP software does not report resevoir levels on introductory cartridges.

Surprisingly, a USB cable is included.

Things I like about the F4185 are that it's quite compact and the paper feed is from the front. I really dislike the fact that I'm gonna have to buy a new cartridges soon. Also, a weird thing about the scanner lid is that it comes off the hinges. Now why do they allow that? Scan large documents maybe???

It's not cute as I thought...more like a dull white. Looks like an ice box. I haven't checked out the photo printing capabilities of the printer.

All in all, I feel I should've gone with the Canon. Oh well, I'm satisfied for now. Gotta see how it serves me in the long run.

And the normal ones are 5ml !

Surprisingly, a USB cable is included.
generally MFD's don't come with a cable..the vendor gave me one free of cost!

Canon service is still questionable
depends on how dedicated the service centres in your city are..

Things I like about the F4185 are that it's quite compact and the paper feed is from the front.
it is a little smaller than the mp180 but i don't consider the front-loading as an advantage// rear loading is better..

I haven't checked out the photo printing capabilities of the printer.
it prints pretty well..but with a 5ml cartridge i doubt your gonna be printing photos often??

well congrats on your purchase..hope it serves you well..

Hmm...For photo printing at least, the HP-58 can be installed. It has a capacity of 17ml.

for HP-58

But it's expensive at around 1-1.5K I think.

Black might be an issue though. It's really hard to find the cartridge capacities. Even Canon hides this information. I hunted a lot for the Canon PG-830 and CL-831 cartridge capacities on the net(used in the MP-228). Did not find the details anywhere.

Looks like these two are low-capacity cartridges...

PG-830 Low-Capacity Black (Pigment)

CL-831 Low-Capacity Color (Dye)

Canon alwys sells standard & high capacity cartridges..but now 'low capacity' ones?

Moreover no mnfctr. want's to list out the ctdge capacity..

if hp starts displayin their cartridge capacities..ppl will freak out n stop buyin!
