Hi guys,

I want to get my dad a new laptop for his birthday, he is currently using a HP-DV series (Single core 2ghz procy, 1.5gb ram,14' screen) lappy, which is fine, but would like to get him a new one.

Requirements:

- Basic MS office capability

- Outlook Calendar (this is the most important for him)

- Preferably greater than 10.1' screen

- Emails, Internet

- Music, movies -occasionally

- Budget 25k max, dont wanna exceed, cause its a waste based on the requirements.

Edit:

Also, my dad will always have:

Microsoft Outlook running

Email client

Web browsers

Now a netbook would do just finr, but I feel the 10.1' screen may not be to his liking, will be harder for him to read as well.I dont think its possible to get a decent C2D 14' lappy for about 25k, else that would be just be perfect for him, simply cause of a bigger screen.

Anyways the netbooks, I checked out

1) Samsung N150 -15k with MTS broadband (1.66ghz, 1gb, 160gb hdd) (there is an independence day promotion going on)

2) Sony Vaio - 22k ( 1.83Ghz cpu, 2gb, 320gb hdd)

3) Dell Mini - 18.5k (similar config to the Samsung N150, but I recall the salesman telling it has 2gb ram, site has 1 gb listed, and on the site it works out to 17.5k)

I am leaning towards to the Vaio, i quite liked the keyboard feel, but the Samsung offer is also tempting.

Please suggest, which one should I go for, also let me know if there any other models worth considering?

Thanks in advance as always!

MSI x340 is very good if you're looking for a bigger screen. It's got 13.4" screen and is more powerful than a regular netbook, very slim and weighs just as much as a netbook at around 1.3 kgs. Will come for around 20k-23k depending on where you're sourcing it from.

Check the sony vaio before buying. I checked a model which was among the demo pieces @ ezone or croma(don't remember), it gets too hot!

As already suggested I too would say look at the ASUS 1201T and the MSI x340. Those screens have a decent resolution as compared to any of the 10.1 inchers. I am probably close to your dad's age and I dislike the 10.1" models.

What Vaio is this? 10" screen?

What about the MSI X320? What price is it available at?

thanks for the suggestion, but I am not sure of MSI for laptops, I mean any idea about the after sales service, although it is really tempting at 24k!

Asus Eee PC 1201T 20.7K
12", 1.6Ghz Athlon Neo, 2gb, 320gb

great suggestion, based on the Athlon Neo MV-40 (1.6GHz), apparently the batter life isnt the best, but I dont think it should be a problem.

the sony is the M- series ( the ad features Kareena changing her clothes)
the MSI costs 24k on ebay.

Guys,

So the Samsung N150+MTS broadband at 15k is not a good deal?

Also, my dad will always have:
Microsoft Outlook running
Email client
Web browsers

Hope the netbooks can handle this with ease.

Well i bought Asus 1201T for my dad only. 10" is just to small for him to read text. He wanted something light, which could play HD video's, best option i could find around 20K mark was 1201T with HD3200. Most of all the build quality is really good and looks are simply awesome. 1201N something is available but is more than 27K, so was little out of budget. If you compromise on battery you can save a lot of money.

No idea about the A.S.S of MSI, I guess many already own MSI laptops here so they would be able to comment on this. This model was retailing in ebay for as low as 20k few months back, now the price seems to be increased but locally you might get it at such prices.

Alternatives are Asus 1201T and 1201N as suggested by others. 1201N has HDMI, but availability is a problem here in India and ridiculously priced too in some sites. These 3 are probably the best options for your dad, as 10" screen is a little too small.

AFAIK the only advantage of the 1201N over the 1201T is that it has an HDMI port. I doubt the OP needs this. On the other hand, IINM the 1201T has a AMD MV40 CPU rather than the Atom used in the 1201N and other netbooks.

Here are prices from my local dealer

Asus 1201T - 20,500

Samsung N150 - 15,500

Samsung N150 - 18,500 (2gb ram, 250Gb hdd)

Dell Mini 10' - 18,150

Dell 12' - 18,450 ( not sure of the config on this one, there is very little detail online too)

MsiX340 - 21,500

Now if it were down to the Msi X340 and the Asus 1201T, the X340 sports a ULV Core Solo processor, will it be able to handle multitasking better than the Athlon Neo of the 1201T? I mean they would definitely be zippier than my dad' current centrino, right?

Doubt it. The older Pentium M was no slouch, and is running at a decent 2GHz.

Although clock for clock the ULV Core Solo is better, it still runs at much lower clocks. Likewise with the Athlon Neo.

At best these 2 would probably be more compact and lightweight than your dad's current model.

I would say a zippier HDD - maybe an SSD (if it has a SATA port) - and more RAM will probably be a more worthwhile upgrade, if looking purely at the performance perspective.
