RAM: 4 GB DDR3
HDD Seagate: 1TB
Keyboard/Mouse: Logitech or any other compact Keyboard/Mouse combo
Cabinet: Compact Cabinet
DVD Writer: LG/Samsung

I am planning to buy this from SP Road, Bangalore. I am planning to use this system as HTPC for watching 1080p HD movies, and hoping to play average games.

If you have suggestions about the configuration, let me know.

AMD Athlon IIx2 250 ~ 2.5K
Gigabyte 880GMA-UD2H ~ 4.5K OR MSI 880G-E45 ~ 4.1K <the MSI has all the features of the Gigabyte>
Corsair ValueRAM 1600 MHz 4GB ~ 2.5K
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 1TB ~ 2.5K
Keyboard + mouse USB Combo will set you back by ~ 700/-
LG or Samsung OEM DVD writer will set you back by ~ 950/-
Cabinet -- any cheap Zebby cabinet ~ 1.5K OR in my view you can get the NZXT Gamma ~ 2.1K <Golccha Computers> + 2x 120mm fans -- 500/-
Go for the AMD Athlon IIx3 440 ~ 3.3K <more cores more VFM more future proof>. + FSP Saga II 350W PSU (don't go for a cheap PSU to save money, you'll not save anything, you end up having problems like overheating and other issues like you can't add a graphic card)

Hey, Thanks for your reply. MSI 880G-E45 doesn't have SB750 south bridge, so it will miss SATA 3.0 and USB 3.0. So, it will not be future proof. I will spend money to get Gigabyte one. And what is the shared memory for graphics between the two?

I was obviously thinking about Athlon X3 upgrade and try my luck with unlocking cores too, but I need to buy a PSU and also keep an eye on stabilty of the system(Heat dissipation, operating voltages and stuff). All I want is 1080p playback, future ready(SATA 3.0, USB 3.0), play some decent games in market.

And when some of my friends start playing more intensive games, I might also think abt buying a good GPU in future.

But, please enlighten me more abt it. So that I might think abt buying Athlon X3 option.

Thanks for your time

And, do you have any recommendations for a compact cabinet? I was actually planning to buy a Zotac Zbox if it is available at a reasonable price in SP road. I want the CPU box to be compact. But not at a very high cost.

Hi,

Find below quotation from Golccha computers

1. ATHLON II X2 250 3.0 GHz AMD 2500

2. MOTHER BOARD 880GMA-UD2H GIGABYTE 5500 (USB 3.0)

3. RAM 4GB DDR3 TRANSCEND 2200

4. 1TB SEAGATE 2500

5. KEY BOARD +MOUSE LOGITECH 600

6. CABNITE 900 TO3900

7. DVD R/W LG 800

8. MONITOR 16”/20 LG 4200/6000

Only for the motherboard, I find the quote high.

The motherboard price might be right since the regular GM-UD2H sells for 4.5k.

But yeah I would stick to the Gigabyte board as well, looks like the best bet around the 5k mark.

Do note, you cannot unlock any cores on the Athlon II X2.

I wouldn't get a compact cabinet if your ultimate goal is for a gaming rig. Airflow is usually very poor in entry level compact boxes.

Get a Sony DVD writer. The Sony-NEC Optiarc drives seem to be consistent in performance.

Ensure you're getting an LCD with a DVI port. The VGA ports are noticeably fuzzy.

I see you haven't mentioned a PSU. Please do so, factoring in the GPU you plan to add at a later time.

And how about Athlon II X3, anyone unlocked the fourth core after buying from sp road? If so, please share. And how about AMD 785G chipsets, there are plenty of motherboards supporting AM3 slot with integrated NVidia graphics (4 to 4.5k), i preferred AMD's chipsets because i thought it will match well with processor.

How abt system stability after core unlocking? Is it risky? How do you compare with ipod jailbreaking(i have an ipod and i have jailbreaked it and i know its perfectly safe)

Hey, getting confused between X2 250 or X3 440 processors. Is it really worth extra price for the third core?
