With increasing number of consumers complaining about the lack of broadband speeds despite operators promising the same, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has himself stepped in to address the issue.
The term broadband refers to high-speed Internet access that is generally faster than the traditional dial-up access. However, the delivery of broadband speeds in India is abysmally slow, and in most cases even half of what is promised by operators.

Operators, however, maintain that they provide more than Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (Trai’s) prescribed quality parametres. “Operators offer whatever they prescribe, it is market dynamic that anyone not offering it will fall aside in this business,” said Rajan Mathews, director-general, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) — a body representing all operators except Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices.

Slow broadband speeds also pose a potential threat to the government’s Digital India mission — providing high-speed internet to every household and individual with a mobile device.

Modi took stock of the situation during a recent meeting with secretaries of various ministries, a source in the communications ministry said.

Modi has asked telecom secretary Rakesh Garg the reason behind the inability of operators to provide advertised internet speeds, and is scheduled to meet him on Tuesday to discuss the matter and progress on his Digital India push, the source added.
Garg is likely to ask for four weeks time to do the analysis and submit the finding to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

“A report based on a study to examine the reasons for slow broadband speeds had been prepared and submitted for approval. But after the meeting in the PMO, a further analysis is being undertaken to find out if the lack of spectrum was hampering speeds,” the source said.

Operators promise to offer speeds of 2mbps that allow customers to download a movie in as little as 20 minutes but actual services often run at less than 512kbps, the minimum for a connection to qualify as broadband as defined by Trai.

India has one of the largest internet user bases globally with 254 million users but only 75.73 million have broadband services.

That mathews guy should be handled roughly to cough out proper answers. Question is about slow speeds, and his reply comes out what they are promising is being provided (he is wrong on that account as well). These corporate people from flipkart to airtel have the habit of giving replies to some other questions after patching them from a common word.

Maybe that court case where the judge asked to demo speed tests should be referenced by somebody as well.

Operators, however, maintain that they provide more than Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (Trai’s) prescribed quality parametres. “Operators offer whatever they prescribe*, it is market dynamic that anyone not offering it will fix prices to thwart competition,” said Rajan Mathews, director-general, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) — a body representing all operators except Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices.

*conditions apply. Speeds will be 512kbps post FUP
There I fixed it!

@ Space ,now PM will ask the reason for Corruption/rape/illiteracy/power cuts/traffic jams/poverty aswell . Damn ,6+ months and he knows nothing. God Bless India.
You're probably reading an article about PM inquiring about Poor Broadband speeds now, but the fact is He has already asked for it within 4 months after coming to power and now its 9 months since his rule http://www.thehindubusinessline.com...adband-projects-speeded-up/article6380360.ece along with NOFN rollout.

As far as Reasons for slow broadband are concerned I'd blame it on Tier1 providers such as Tata and Airtel who are running monopoly wholesale bandwidth business and BSNL for being corrupt.

I have always wondered in these official releases and adverts. . when they say download a movie in X minutes, download a song in Y minutes etc. What exactly are they pointing towards ? The 5 % population who is using legit softwares/subscriptions or the rest of the internet (read : Torrents) ?

Incredible India itself is the reason for slow internet speed in India.
In fact everything is slow here except for corruption and delays.
And all starts from Govt. and ends @ the common man.

My best guess is that they are calculating the average movie as being of 700 MB and the average speed of their internet as 3 Mbps (or whatever) and the download time taken is pure maths. That is, if we get 3G speeds everywhere, forget the 4G lone operator.

As for writing a letter, not a bad idea, and it should be done on all media platforms, since that will garner max publicity!

4 weeks for the analysis, 4 weeks for preparing the answers and another 4 years for fixing the problem perhaps?

You did.

And then they will ask another 5 years . I remember Modi said [before becoming PM] that he will change India in just 5 years. After becoming PM he said that i will need 10 years as a comparison board between BJP and Congress . lol .

Bol Bacchan. Don't really expect anything to change.
Why not.

2004 budget, Chidambaram announced FDI in civil aviation, telecoms & insurance. Two years, three years then never.

Jaitley so far, FDI in construction, defence, railways & insurance. 3 out of 4 done!

i would like to know what is the reason for slow internet in this country. Because years of following forums has not been able to find the answer. Hope the PM's guys can do better.

Cartel is the reason for slow internet. No one allows the other operator to bring better plans. Smaller operators do manage to provide them somehow. You recently started with 100 Mbps plans. Recently in USA, the FCC or whatever pulled up the various operators for saying that customers don't need faster speeds. The FCC asked them that if the customer doesn't need the faster speeds then why do they advertise them.
It is the same whether it is USA or India, group of these companies form cartel and ensure that things remain where it is.

There was an interesting statistic i saw recently.

when it comes to land lines the public vs private share is 89:11

when it comes to mobile the figure is opposite

I don't entirely buy the cartel idea, this is the appt building idea scaled up to the country level. I would point the finger at govt policy or rather its lack thereof. Unbundling the public network has worked in many countries abroad. What is the holdup in India.

airtel decided to invest in africa a few years back, because they did not see any reason to invest in india under the previous regime. Laying line is pricey to get customers and when is the expected payback.

What is the govt doing to improve things is the question. That is what i'm looking to see.
