User Guides Port Forwarding for D-Link 502T

Precautions to take before making any change to settings of D-Link 502T

First make sure that one is able to log on to the router by typing 192.168.1.1 This is the default address of the router. While entering the router the router asks for the user & password. Give the necessary details. At the outset change the default password. Now before making any changes go to Tools > System & save the settings to hard drive as shown in the 1st image below.

This will save a file called config.bin. Save it to a CD/thumbdrive somwhere where it'll be safe. This is your backup copy or solution in case something does go wrong.

Port-Forwarding on D-Link 502T

The next image shows the webpage when one enters the admin of D-Link 502T. Now on entering Go to the Advanced tab & then to the Virtual Server Option as shown in the 3rd image. The image below shows where to go to enter the port-specific settings. Choose user as shown in the image. This throws up another window as shown below. Use the Add button. This throws up another small window where u enter the port settings.

What port u'r torrent should run is thrown either by the application or something which is decided by you. Normally this should be in the upper crust of the ports for security reasons. Make a name for the rule & enter the same port no. for start as well as the end of the rule. Make sure to use either TCP or UDP in the settings. There is an option to also use both but it needs something called asn integer which I'm not familiar both. Click Apply. This is also shown in the image below.

After this you come to the earlier window where list of available rules are there. Add u'r rule to go into the applied rules as shown in the image below.

Finally save & reboot as shown in the image below. After rebooting see whether u can surf the net. If u can surf the net, it's good sign that you managed to atleast not screw up the surfing. Now fire up your favorite torrent application & hopefully you start torrenting. Happy torrenting

In case if one is interested then one can also watch the slideshow of the images to get some idea. Of course it's not perfect, it's a WIP :)

This is my first attempt at writing a guide/article so comments/suggestions to make it better are welcome.

Very useful! Repped!

But Bitcomet already works on mine...any idea why? I mean are particular ports already enabled? On the other hand, let me try to find out :):)

If u're running winxp then there is something called UpnP . Taking the same from Bitcomet :-

What does the UPnP Auto Port Mapping mean?

To got the best speed, BitComet need a public listening port as other p2p applications do. But if you are behind a DSL router or use Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), you need manually config a port mapping (a port forwarding from gateway/router to your computer). It is usually a boring task. BitComet takes advantage of the UPnP technology as what MSN Messenger does, it will automatically config the port mapping for you as soon as the download task begins. Please note that: UPnP is only supported in Windows XP or above, and your hardware router must support UPnP and enable it, too. By default, BitComet won't release the portmapping when exit. You may config it in Options->Advanced->Connections Dialogs.

hmm here`s the same thing in text format... (if its ok)

1. Login to the router/modem using Internet Explorer. You will have a problem storing the settings if you use any other browser.

2. Setup --> DHCP Configuration

3. In the Server On Start IP box enter 192.168.1.10. Let the End IP remain whatever it is. Click Apply.

4. Click Start --> Run --> Type cmd (or command if Win 9x/ME) --> In the command prompt enter "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Copy all that info to Notepad.

5. Goto Start --> Control Panel (Classic Mode) --> Network Connections --> Right Click on your LAN card --> Properties --> Click Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) --> Click Properties.

6. In the box Select "Use the following IP address" and "Use the following DNS server address".

7. In the IP address box enter 192.168.1.6 (you can use from 2-9 in the last octet) as your IP address. Enter the Subnet mask as you saw in command prompt earlier and similarly fill up the other values.

Thats it you're done, now follow the normal steps to forward your ports, wherever it says to enter IP enter "192.168.1.6" as your IP address and not the Live IP.

1. Login to the router/modem using Internet Explorer.

2. Advanced --> Virtual Server.

3. Giva a name to the rule in the rule box, enter private IP, enter protocol TCP/UDP/Both, then enter the ports you want forwarded in port start and port end accordingly, in the port map add a port through which you want all your traffic mapped, generally within the range. Click Apply.

4. Tools --> System --> Save and Reboot.

5. When its rebooted, goto Advanced --> Filters. Select Inbound Filters.

6. In Source IP, select Any IP from dropdown box. In destination IP select Single IP from Dropdown box, and enter your IP there.

7. In Source port, depending on whether you need a range or a single port, select relevant then enter the port(s) into the field. Do the same for the Destination port(s).

8. In Protocol select what you entered in the Virtual Server Rule, TCP/UDP/Both accordingly.

9. Set Action to Allow. Click Apply. When the rule appears click the Enable checkbox.

10. Goto, Tools --> System --> Save & Reboot.

11. Restart your machine, you should have forwarded ports now.

also sometimes i use the bridge mode. its actually a lot more better then conventional port forward, cause you can use torrents without worring abt port forwarding :) ..

To Put your router in the Bridged mode

1) 192.168.1.1 -> WAN -> Wan settings -> bridged mode

2) Tools - System - save and reboot

Your in bridged mode.

Next,

Goto Network connections in Ctrl panel >> Create a new connection >> connect to the internet >> setup my connection manually >> connect using broadband connection that requires username & password >> Put in the ISP name ie MTNL >> put in ur username and password >> add a shrtcut (will make it easy to find after setting up the connection.)

just dial and you would login ..

bridge mode is software controlled.. means that if you restart/shutdown your pc you would be disconnected from the net :)

(good thing if you schedule do shutdown your comp at 8am every morning)

Totally wrong, I don't know why that happens at u'r end. I use FF to store all my settings & they happen fine. Of course the D-Link 502T has a bsd kernel so that might 've something to do with it. Don't know why modem/router u're using hence can't comment on that.

Also I've heard that bridged mode voids warrranty on the modem/router. Don't know whether that's true or not but that's what I've heard. Anybody know any different.

Trying to 'port forward' my cousin's 502T. After selecting Advanced --> Virtual Server, I get a error pop up saying "You must enter an IP Address on LAN clients page to enter this setup". Then I get the LAN Clients page with IP Address and Host Name. Like :

LAN Clients
IP Address
Host Name

Valid IP Range: 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254
Static Addresses Delete IP Address Host Names Type
Dynamic Addresses Reserve IP Address Host Names Type

What exactly should I fill in here ? Whatever I do, I get the same screen again without any message ( error or OK ).
Any idea ?

Thanks.

Can one of you guys at least tell me what are the values for IP Address and Host name on the LAN Clients page on your DSL 502T ? Please.

PoBoy, first of all can u make sure tht ur using the firmware version V2.00B01T01.ML.20050530 which u can find out by going to Tools > Status page. The guide has been written with respsect to this firmware version.

As far as IP Address & Host name are concerned, atleast at my end, the Static IP Address is blank, the dynamic IP Address shows 192.168.1.2 & Hostname is my comp. with the ID no. (hostname can be anything u name ur computer while installing XP) . Also I have never had to do anything what u described above. Perhaps its a firmware issue. If the firmware is the same, check the settings given above. Lemme know how it goes

It is possible, but would recommend u get it done by either ur vendor or D-Link support people. There have been cases of routers becoming dead due to improper upgrade of firmware.
