I think this section should be the one to post this topic...if not, mods feel free to move.

Have a 1ton AC @ ~1250W (in addition to all the regular stuff of course) which worked quite a lot the last 2 months.. the electricity bill which has been generated stands at Rs7500 (1800 units), which is probably the most we have ever paid :(

Please tell me is this kind of a bill normal for a family of 4? Or should i file some complaint to have the meter checked or something??

Any thoughts??

Thanks. :)

Assuming that AC ran for an avg of 8 hours a day , thats approx. 600 units of electricity for the AC for two months , what was your consumption in the earlier months without an AC ?

Well the lowest that the bill has gone as far as i can see online, is the bill of Oct-Nov 09, at 2260 and of feb-Mar 10 at 2000. in the latter i think there was ac being used, though not so much, because of the unusually hot march this year... and the geyser was probably being used to a small extent in Feb.

And now when i think about it, the ac usage has probably been around 13 hrs on avg. the last 2 months so can amount to around 1k units.

and whats the per unit charge at wherever you are
at my place running the a/c for 8 hours a night for a month and running the oven for 5-6 cakes in that month , the bill came upto 3000

If you are from Mumbai above 500 unites Reliance Energy charging you Rs.6.50 per unit + Rs. 277/- per month

hmm.. I'm at New Delhi... havent got the bill yet so dont know the exact rate (couldn't even find the info on their site...but ya loads of payment options :x) but the avg that is coming is 3.9Rs/unit. Also there's a 360 Rs tax as well...

^^ You could check out the tariff in your previous months hard copies of the bill, most probably at the back. Power companies have different tariff slabs as per units consumed, details of which should be in the bill itself.

Is the geyser a instant one or a normal one, they consume about 3 units and 2 units a hour respectively. So how many hrs do you leave them On.
So basically you are consuming 30units a day or 1250watt every single hour.so do you run your AC 24/7

adder.. though the avg does come to that figure, no i dont use it 24/7! n dunno bout how many hours the geyser is on... will check. its a normal one.

arjpillai.. ya i'm trying to find one now..it'll be given there.

Good lord,7500/- for a EB bill. I have 2 Ac's and we used them for 2 moths every night and I got a bill of 3700/-Rs. . . 7500/- is way too much.

If its BSES Delhi (Rajdhani/Yamuna)

you can check your details here for the history and current bill

I am from south delhi, Our may-june bill was around 4750 (4 bachelors with 2 having graveyard shifts) and we used the cooler 24x7. We now have an AC lets see how much bill it shows up.

You can also put an electric complaint and they will test the meter for a nominal fees. Also these new electric meters increase the electricity bill if there is leakage due to faulty earthing.

Reliance energy is know to jack up bills irrespective of the units used.
For the last three month of consumption of around 194 194 and 204 units had our bills ranging from 700 850 and 1000.even though the billing slab is same and earlier months consumption was like ditto. Even then had variable bills amounts.

Reliance Energy keep increasing it's electricity charges from time to time, so better check per unit charges with consumption for more clarification.

prashantrana
, when we used to use coolers, used to work probably 22x7, ~400w, the bill was around 3500 something. And ya i know those links... pay all my bills online... but i dont think there's any mention of the rate slabs anywhere.

ankurshah yes it definitely looks somewhat fishy but the avg use did increase these past 2 months around 13-14hours/day... usually in summer its <5000 with it working around 9-10hrs.

ggt as much as i hate reliance, i think its just them increasing the rate. better check the rates for ur area.

checked the rates, they're as follows:
First 200 units-2.45; next 200 units-3.95; anything above 4.65! <--- This above 400 figure is the dangerous bit.

I think just to be sure i'll get the meter checked at least... what if it is stated as undercharging and i end up paying them arrears... lol!

Have u checked ur meter? by saying that i mean switch off all power equipments (even fridge) thn put a load of 1k watts for 1 hr, reading shuld increase by one unit. U may decrease the time frame with increased load. Idea is 1 unit of power is consumed when a load of 1k watt is put on load for 1 hour. If u find that meter is fine thn u shuld start worrying bout internal wiring, power leakages, faulty equipments (maybe time to call some professional).

well I don't know about others, but my bill too is for over Rs 7,000. And given how much my computer and AC run, that is perfectly justified. This is all in Delhi

For 2 months? How much is the cost per unit? :)

I pay about Rs. 1500 for 2 months at ~ 5 Rs per unit, here at Surat. Not many heavy appliances apart from my PC. :ashamed:
