Whenever there is a power-cut my UPS doesn't give backup at-once and a result the entire PC comes to a halt shutting down abruptly. Is it not harmful for the CPU to shut down in this improper way? As far as I know a PC should be properly shut down by first closing all the open and running programs and then one should select SHUT DOWN from the main menu..........

Yea thats true ... the voltage suddenly goin out of the cpu may cause a bit of prob to it but i aint that sure .... the shutdown option makes sure that wateva u have worked on has been saved n all programs are closed properly....the more impact of the improper shutdown is on the softwares ... may be u'll have ur windows crashing :P ... or some softwares not working properly

Here goes my two cents :

- Check the the battery of the UPS may be it has worn out/ gone bad. A good battery will cost you around 700/- bucks.

- If you plan to use an Inverter then make sure you use it in the UPS mode so that your PC doesnt shutdown.

As far abrupt shutdown of the PC is concerned:

- It has a definite effect on the HDD.

- Thats why after every improper shutdown windows checks for errors in the filesystem which is mounted on the HDD.

- Multiple such filesystem errors (read multiple such shutdowns) will eventually result in OS getting corrupted.

can u use inverter instead of ups??????

You can, but it isn't advisable.

A UPS is the best bet for a computer.

(Switches to back up power, a whole lot faster)

So get the UPS battery checked and replaced.

that may not be the case entirely.

many inverters now come with advertised as UPS mode.

i have one.

switching is instantaneous.

PC lasts alive atleast 6hours without gaming.. that is with an HD4850 idling along with an unlocked quad.

have been using for past 2-2.5yrs now.

6hours, that is the maximum hours of powercut we have faced at a stretch till now.

and yes a couple of fans were running too :P

its a 650kVA inverter with a huge truck wala battery from exide...actual rating i do not remember.
