Hi all,
Recently saw a power LED on an Asus K8V-MX m/b series (Via chipset) which had an AMD Sempron 2800+ (1400.335). The performance of the m/b was o.k. but would like to know if Power LED's are a standard feature on Asus Motherboards or are they also available in some other motherboards too? Looking for AMD solutions. The power LED is good for troubleshooting :)

There are quite a number of other boards/brands that have some form of "Diagnostic LEDs", i.e. Asus is not the only one with such features. Off the bat I can name Abit, DFI, Epox, MSI as other manufacturers.

Implementation of these diagnostic LEDs depends on the manufacturer as well as the type of board being produced. Lower-end/Basic boards like the Asus K8V-MX and others have a simple Motherboard Power LED on it which just indicates if the motherboard is receiving power or not - quick and easy, but not detailed enough.

Higher-end/Enthusiast level boards have much more advanced systems. Abit (eg:Abit AN8 Fatality) and Epox (eg: Epox 9NPA3 Ultra) have a Diagnostic 7-segment LED display on the board that displays various 'codes', and based on the code you can identify which component is causing a boot failure. DFI in their nF4 Lanparty range have a series of 4 diagnostic LEDs - different combinations of the LEDs indicate different problems, there's also a power and vdimm LED. MSI have their external Diagnostic LED bracket that fits into a PCI slot bracket and displays a combination of Red/Green on 4 LEDs again indicating different problems.

That's cool. Thanx for the effort. Would like to have some screenshots of these diagnostic LED's if possible & some of the popular m/b's also. Intel as well as AMD platform with integrated graphics core. Couldn't rep u as have to spread some reputation around before giving it to u.

Another thing. Any base prices for the boards mentioned above with warranties.I had heard of few boards giving warranty for something like 5 yrs. or so but don't know whether that was the truth or not.

If you plan to assemble your own comp then would LEDs be your real priority?

We've had the system of beep sequences since the day I got my first mobo (seven years back). LEDs are no better than that. You need to remember beep sequences vis a vis you need to know the sequences of the LEDs that are ON or OFF. Its all the same.

^ Good point! However, I guess there is an advantage towards visual cues over the audio ones.

Shirish, as I mentioned earlier, you wont find these complex diagnostic systems being used in lower-end boards, i.e. AMD/Intel boards with Onboard graphics types. So if you are trying to make your decision based on a board which has these LEDs, I seriously doubt if you would find any :)

Can't get a suitable pic of the DFI LED's.. will try later :P

Would love to know the Asus & DFI m/b LED stuff. It is sad to see that only Asus fits the bill AFA the warranty is concerned. The other 2 are not upto the mark. Would love to know which Asus boards have Diagnostic LED's. no_nonsesnse: Although u're very much right & there is truth in what u say, but its always better to have a visual cue. As time moves on I hope some of these feature-sets move to general boards also. Thanx again Crazy. Would be looking forward for u'r responses on LED's as well as if any prices are available.

Asus is 3 years, MSI I think is 1 year, DFI is 2 years. Rest are not available in india.
When i bought dfi lanparty ultra-d at prime abgb
,i confirmed thrice abt warranty and they said it was 3 years.

I bought the UltraD for ~9500 in Bangalore. This was three months back. Was planning to get this too from the US but dropped the idea citing warranty reasons.
