Hi gang,
Been planning to upgrade my ancient system for a while.
My current system is
A64 3200+
2*1 ddr 400 ram
A8N VM mobo
8600GT 256mb
160gb sata HDD
LG DVD writer
500w smps
17" CRT

I have been reading thru the forums and i have narrowed down to the spec below -

C2D E8400 9400/-
ASUS P5QL-EM 7800/-
2 *2 GB 800 MHZ CORSAIR 2800/-
SG SATA II 500 GB (32 MB Buffer) 7200.12 RPM 3250/-
MICROSOFT MM PS/2 415/-
22'' BENQ HDMI 12700/-
512 MB 4850 HD PCIE 9400/-
Zebronics Bijli 1650/-
SMPS(taking from old comp)
DVD writer(from old comp)
These add up to 47415/- (prices taken from computerwarehousepricelist and theitwares.com

I am gonna primarily use this for gaming. I have never oced before, but not opposed to it. Might not do it immediately but might do it in say 6months, if needed.

My question is, can we reduce anything here. I was hoping for something close to 40k, without compromising on gaming performance. I understand that 12.7k monitor and 9.4k on gfx card are high, but dont really want to compromise on these. I will prolly not upgrade for another 3 years :). So it needs to be a little future proof!

Suggestions anyone?
Cheers
V

Yeah, pretty sure the smps can handle the c2d + 4850. Shall post details tomorrow, dont remember offhand.

The price i took for 4850 was for saphire, not palit. Been hearing stuff about palit and defective products.

Why dont you go for AMD

AMD X3 720BE - 7.6k

Biostar 790GX - 4.2k

GSkill Pi or Corsair -3k

Benq T2200 HD 10k

SataII 7200.12 500gb 3k

Microsoft MM .4k

512 MB 4850 HD PCIE 9400/-

Antec 300 3.5k

Corsair VX 450 4k

LG 22X 1.1k

that comes to 46k and you have great Gaming PC and the you have better upgrade path...with AMD

But intel doesnt have an upgrade path..besides he can get another 4850 in future for playing games like crysis...except for crysis i think 4850 would be able handle many other games..even if he doesn't upgrade a tricore will do better than a dualcore by then...is'nt that true.

mod edit: please do not hotlink images from other sites, upload it on a third party image hosting website like imageshack

^^ COD4 is totally NOT the game to be using for an fps based comparison. even a 3870 gives playable frames :|

Also, the question of an upgrade path does NOT arise coz the OP has clearly mentioned that he isnt gonna upgrade for another 3 years.

@krishnavamshi24: Please do not hotlink images. Use an image uploader to host the image.

The GTX260 core 216 retails for close to 180USD (+ taxes if via Newegg). I say grab that. For that price, b/w the GTX and the HD4870 1 GB its a no brainer. :P

Sure mate...will do that from the next time...:ohyeah:

If you aren't going to upgrade for another 3 years, go for a quad core at the very least. Dual cores are already getting relegated to the bottom end of the market and pretty much all mainstream processors later this year will be quad core. Low end Nehalem i7s are about to be unleashed over the summer, so game devs are obviously going to take advantage of more cores.
Bottom line- spend a bit extra and get a Q6600 (great for OCing) or a Q8200 (runs cooler @ stock). The Q6600 uses a 9x multiplier, Q8200 uses 7x multiplier. At 1600mhz fsb, the 66 runs at 3.6ghz. At the same 1600mhz fsb, the q82 runs at 2.8ghz.

I play mostly mmorpgs, with the occasional fps shooter. Playing warhammer online lately, previously WoW.
Even though WAR isnt an fps, its pretty demanding(due to coding issues, memory leakage etc). Should i go for a 22" HD monitor, or will a 19" suffice. Basically, should i try to get more fps out of the 1600*1280 res, rather than aim for 1920*1080? Also will playing at lower res than the 22" native resolution look bad quality wise?
And i don't have and don't plan to have any consoles.

WoW is CPU hog.
I suggest a hybrid from the configs suggested by SidhuPunjab & krishnavamshi24 , have a look

Code:
C2D E8400 9400/- -------------------> AMD X3 720BE - 7.6k + SCCF 92MM CPU Cooler 1.8k

ASUS P5QL-EM 7800/- ---------------> Biostar 790GX - 4.2k
