Price war breaks out over XFX HD 4890 graphics cards

HEXUS.channel has exclusively learnt that AMD's premier distributor Avnet has suddenly and without warning dumped its entire stock of XFX Radeon HD 4890 graphics cards at a knock down price.

Apparently Avnet had been selling these cards to trade for around £161 but, in order to get rid of them ASAP, has knocked them down to more like £130, a drop of around 20 percent.

It's not yet clear whether or not this extraordinary action by Avnet is indicative of a more permanent problem between itself and AMD's prized new AIB partner XFX, which was previously an exclusive NVIDIA AIB and arguably the greenest jewel in its crown.

Just as mysteriously, it looks like the entire stock of bargain cards, thought to number over 70, has been snapped up by one e-tailer - Novatech.

Furthermore, it seems rival etailer Overclockers UK has caught wind of this and put pressure on one of its key suppliers of ATI graphics cards, which presumably includes XFX branded ones - distributor Enta - to follow suit.

Apparently Enta has duly supplied at least 60 of the cards to Overclockers at the knock-down price and is expected to seek a substantial rebate from XFX in compensation.

$ is 47.5~ now :D

^ 4850 will be EOL soon, 4770 performs at AVG. 95% performance of 4850!!! but the power consumption decrease is up to 40%.

hey......its POUNDS not DOLLAR

Thanks for bringing that up I always thought £ meant Dollars.

Anyways hoping for a price drop.....

4850 is gonna phase out?? WTF.. such disrespected going for once such a awesome card.

but yeah 4770 is more reasonable to buy, consumes very LOW power and performs almost like 4850 :)

i think its 128 bit memory controller...while nvidias have 400+ something...I read somewhere cards should atleast have a 256 bit mem int controller...could someone shed some light?

even though 4770 (RV740) is 128 bit,..it has GDDR5 which effectively doubles the memory bandwidth,..so a 128 bit bandwidth in 4770 is equal to 256 bit bandwidth in the GDDR3 4850 (RV770)

isnt the 126 bit memory interface a bummer on 4770?

bit rate wud have been a prob if it was gddr3 memory but here gddr5 is used and bandwidth is therefore much higher like a 256 bit bus.

when is this price cut happening?? I heard starting next week?? current 4850 owners should sell it at any price :) will be able to buy 4890 by adding few pennies.

after 4850 EOL, nobody would even thought of buying it.

I am thinking of 4770 coz it will cost 4500-5500 I think and is 40% more power efficient and gives 95% same performance as 4850

waiting for next week so eagerly... :) :)

srsly?? next week?? WOW!! Source?

can't say a 'source' exactly but this is the biggest chat on internet right now and seems like everyone is ready to jump upon it :)

happy selling my fellow 4850 owners :) or even 4870 owners :P

why are you guys making such a big deal of this????

This particular thing is limited to UK market.

Also $ coming down to 47.5 is good, but actual bank rate is about Rs.48.3.

Thats your real $ rate as thats how much you will have to pay when you go out to buy $$$.

Indian prices wont change for a while. And quiet frankly those who bought 4850 locally should just stick to the card till the end of this year. Its a good card and should easily tide the users till DX11 pops out.
