arre Price Drop does matter re... Those who have shifted or planning to shift to 24" monitors need the GTX 260 or 4870 or such high end stuff..

Evn 22" monitor owners are unable to run ALL games at high if they have a 4850....... Hence the need of high-end.

EDIT: moreover DX11 cards (performing >= GTX 260) wud be the GTX300series n HD5xxx which will have high intro prices (mostly 14k+) So then v will have to again wait for their prices to drop a bit :(

EDIT2: Also, Full-fledged use of DX11 in games will again take More time = More wait :(

Dont say all games :P

Games like Clear Sky bring even my GTX 280 to its knees.

The people who have a system built around HD4850 say last year in december can easily hold off till the real next gen cards show up.

Even I sold off my GFX cards only bcoz I had too many :ashamed:

f you jump from 4850 to something like GTX295 / HD4870x2 then you will get that WOW experience.

If you move from that card to say 4870 or even GTX 260, its not really a upgrade that will leave you feeling satisfied for long.

Ofcourse its not a good buy if you are buying it brand new anymore thanks to 4770 and falling prices of GTX 260, but for the person who owns this card, there no good reason to sell it if he hasnt upgraded to bigger monitor.

4770 is a replacement for the 4830, that card is completely obsolete now.
Regardless of other factors, the 4850 still outperforms the 4770, albeit by a small margin and at the cost of more power.
Obviously though, it's not wise to pick a new 4850 over a 4770.... unless there's a price drop to warrant it :D

do not go for a gtx 260/4870 if you have a 4850 right now. i have seen the real time fps difference (with fraps) between both these cards and the 4850. The gain is minimal,..definitely not compared to the price difference. when i upgraded from my 8500 to gtx 260,..the performance was so much that i could not believe my eyes,...that's the difference you should look for. i would suggest you upgrade to at least a chipset which is 2 generations higher then the present card you own.

^may be it wil handle but if d company itself is specifying a min 500w then why not to go wid them n i thnk it also depends on wat other components r there in a pc n how much power they r consuming.

How good is a second hand 4850 OC against a first hand OC 4770?

4850 OC = 4770 OC (Coz the 40nm GPU, DDR5 Ram on HD4770 OCs better than that on 4850)

EDIT: Hence a new HD4770 @6.5k is much better VFM than a used HD4850 @6k... Reasons in my next post.

Even then,as an overclocking noob,I am afraid I will accidentally fry the 4770.:ashamed: I like to play it safe since money is so tight(read:nonexistent) these days.:P

P.S.: I was already thinking of putting up a thread for "Graphic card for a Overclocking Noob". And I am confused between these two. A second hand 4850 or a shiny new 4770.

a friend of mine is also super confused.. has a budget of 300 pounds in the uk and doesn't know what to buy..

2x 4890 for 300 pounds

2x gtx 260 core 216 for 300 pounds

or a 4870x2 for 240 pounds

any suggestions guys ?

Obviuos answer: 4770 coz:

1. Overclocks better

2. Consumes Half the amt of power of 4850 (70W vs. 140W)

3. Runs much cooler than 4850

4. New card will have longer warranty + u get bill + no hassles.

5. HD4850 will EOL soon as mentioned by OP
