A couple of the review links I posted for the 780Ti on the previous page speculate as to why the Titan will remain at $999 for the moment. Its going to remain a niche product for those who are willing to pay extra for double precision support in compute applications...
One 780Ti review link I somehow forgot to add yesterday was the one I felt was the most "level headed". HardOCP has a somewhat different perspective from a lot of the other sites when it comes to the 780Ti Vs R290X debate.
Some interesting snippets from the article - " The first comparison everyone is most curious about is how would the GeForce GTX 780 Ti compare to the AMD Radeon R9 290X. Out of all our games, there was only one game that had a higher playable setting on the GTX 780 Ti, Far Cy 3. However, we know that the R9 290X is throttling performance in that game even at "Uber Mode" 55% fan speed as previous tested. It is possible, that with a higher fan speed the performance would increase to the levels the GTX 780 Ti is producing. This is unfortunately one of the negative points about the R9 290X, and that is throttling performance below the frequency cap of 1GHz.
However, in every other game we tested the gameplay experience was exactly the same between the GTX 780 Ti and the R9 290X at 2560x1600 resolution. There were some small framerate performance differences, often with the GTX 780 Ti coming out on top. However, we are talking about differences at most of 5%. With a difference that small, it is not noticeable in-game and does not allow one card to offer a better visual quality experience over the other.
For all intents and purposes, the GeForce GTX 780 Ti and the Radeon R9 290X at Uber Mode are identical in delivering the same gameplay experience.
It is clear from this breakdown that the AMD Radeon R9 290X is the better value in terms of performance by a long shot. It is $150 cheaper than the GeForce GTX 780 Ti, but delivers the same gameplay experience and very near the same framerate performance. A performance difference that makes little or no real difference. The $150 price difference is a much larger difference than the performance difference.
AMD gave us two fan modes on the R9 290X. On one hand we have "Quiet Mode" with its 40% fan RPM cap. On the other hand we can have a louder, but better gaming experience, with "Uber Mode" using a 55% RPM fan cap. These modes have fueled a lot of debate and a lot of FUD. Using 40% Quiet Mode, the fan is fairly quiet. With Uber Mode’s 55% the sound profile becomes more debatable. We would call Uber Mode moderately loud, yes you can hear it, but it is not annoying loud. Manually setting a 65%+ fan cap, the reference cooling solution is very loud and will likely a agitate many users. We are running the R9 290X in Uber Mode for the review today. In Uber Mode this reference-cooled R9 290X is no doubt louder than the other cards, but to refer to it as a "jet engine" at these speeds is not close to a fair comparison. We have no issues with gaming with the R9 290 in Uber Mode sitting next to us on an open test bench.
The GeForce GTX 780 Ti is able to keep 966MHz clock speed while at 83c temp with 62% fan. Whereas, the R9 290X can keep close to 1GHz with a 55% fan but a 95c GPU temp.
On the positive side the GTX 780 Ti is faster than the GTX 780 and the GTX TITAN. If you want the fastest NVIDIA GPU, this is it, no questions asked.
The GTX 780 Ti does not dominate the Radeon R9 290X. Instead, it kind of helps prove that the Radeon R9 290X is a powerful (and power hungry) beast of a video card. The GeForce GTX 780 Ti with all its SMX units and CUDA Cores at play, is only equaling the performance and experience of the Radeon R9 290X. The GTX 780 Ti isn't overshadowing the R9 290X, or claiming a clear win or victory. The GTX 780 Ti is merely matching the gameplay experience of the Radeon R9 290X. In fact, the GTX 780 Ti is matching the R9 290X gameplay experience at a $150 premium.
On the efficiency side of things, the victory clearly goes to NVIDIA. If power utilization, noise, and thermals are your highest concern, then there is no other choice right now but GTX 780 or GTX 780 Ti. However, we would like to point out that even in "Quiet Mode" the R9 290X is a huge competitor to the GTX 780. If you want the R9 290X to compete with the GTX 780 Ti, you will want to run it in "Uber Mode." We are hoping for custom retail video cards with custom coolers to allow the potential of R9 290X to shine through, with minimal noise. However we have yet to even see any of AMD partners’ custom R9 290 and R9 290X cooling solutions. That does not bode well for those of us on the wait list.
When it comes down to bang for the buck, the Radeon R9 290X is offering that in spades. Even the Radeon R9 290 is close to R9 290X performance levels for a lot less expense. If you want the "fastest" video card, it is going to be the GeForce GTX 780 Ti. This cannot be denied, it has the fastest framerate performance, but only by a small margin. If you want to save some cash, and still get the same gameplay experience of the GTX 780 Ti, the Radeon R9 290X will save you $150.
We are impressed at the level of competition on both Red and Green sides. This only helps the consumer. The Radeon R9 290X is not appealing to all enthusiasts and gamers in its current reference form. We fully expect upcoming custom cards to be better in terms of cooling and sound profile. Conversely, the GeForce GTX 780 Ti can be purchased today for a rather large price premium over the R9 290X in its current reference cooling form with total confidence. The GeForce GTX 780 Ti is an incredible piece of hardware that is offered up at an incredible price."
However this "$150" premium on the 780Ti over the R290x includes 3 free games as well as the shield discount coupon (which is useless unless you plan on buying one) but it does narrow down the difference between the two offerings, especially if the bundled games appeal to you...
^ Nvidia price cut seems to have happened for only one product so far, namely the ASUS GRAPHICS CARD GTX 780 3GB DDR5 DC II OC. At this new price point, it will be the cheapest 780 available here WHEN it arrives. Unfortunately, its availability is currently listed as "pre-order" -
Launch Price Rs.78,750----Earlier Price Cut Rs.54,999----Current Price (pre-order) Rs.44,299.
The same GPU was listed for $525 on newegg a while back. http://mdcomputers.in/nvidia.html/asus-graphics-card-gtx-780-3gb-ddr5-dc-ii-oc.html
On the other hand, the ZOTAC GRAPHICS CARD GTX 780 3GB cards price has actually gone UP -
Launch Price Rs.49,000----Earlier Price Cut Rs.50,500----Current Price-51,515
