Privacy advocates raise concern over Apple scanning iPhones for child abuse images

The issue is this is a slippery slope. Just because people don't love apple like you doesn't mean you are the only person who understand hashes in the world. It is now a years old technology nothing new.

Issue is not that apple will look at my photos. Who cares if any apple employee looks at my photos. Issue is once this is built in, the governments can and will force apple to flag for other areas as well. What if the chinese government finds opposition as the most hineous crime and asks apple to flag all users who have photos of opposition in gathering. What if they want all gunholders to be flagged.

The issue is apple can and will have the ability to scan all your photos, hash or otherwise. Nobody is saying identifying child abusers is not worth doing. The idea that apple is introducing a backdoor which can be used to invade users' privacy by various government's
Buddy, I have seen your post of iPhone, Mac and anything related to Apple. You're an apple hater and that's the fact. Tbh no system is perfect, let it be android, ios, Linux or windows

Stop this nonsense as you're losing credibility.. all the best.. hope you won't start hating being a human going ahead, else you'll be in a deep trouble..

Peace.. ohm..

Haha what kind of logic is that ? I am nearing 40 and never faced any issues separating what i hate vs what i dont. I am. An apple hater and you are an apple apologist. Hope you don't start loving terrorists going ahead, else you are in deep trouble

I do not visit TE as often as I used to so I may have a limited POV but still:
While there is no denying there are apologists for all kinds of brands, I haven’t seen happening for Apple on TE for the most part …

As with any platform, Mac OS/ iOS have their pros and cons and the pros outweigh the cons for some users (like I) and similarly for windows/ Linux and/or android for others..
Personally I prefer the iOS + Mac OS + TVos combination for my end-user needs
So would you , for example, consider my posts recommending Apple for someone with a similar use case as an apology for apple?

As a corollary, I have not seen anyone going around constantly dissing Microsoft on any windows related threads - which is not what I can say for your posts.

On a lighter note, did you intend to pick AAPL , decided against it, and now regret doing that? :D

I have only seen you post only positive things about apple so not sure what you are saying about being unbiased? You can just scroll up this thread and you will find apple loyalists one after another who are known to be only positive for apple so you can easily find one if you are unbiased.

I hate apple for what it represents and what will happen to the tech world if ever apple came close to being a major player in Indian tech market. I am just happy that will never happen in my lifetime in India.

I have seen him specifically describe his experience with both Mac OS and Windows extensively and he DID mention whatever he found as flaws in mac and windows as well. He has even praised his LG gram (ig?) for what it is. Don't talk bullshit for god's sake.

You hate apple for what dear? You hate them because you can't afford their apparently over priced products and nobody cares. There I said it to your face. Been a while with this nonsense. Stop trash talking like a teenager and grow up.

p.s: now jobless. have all the time in the world to argue with a troll :)

Haha bhai you are back. Again with this affordability bullshit. I already showed you pics of my apple devices last time you brought up this childish argument

. So? I can buy apple devices am I part of your rich club now? If you missed my 2 lakh projector purchase you can check it out. I can burn my money instead of spending it on apple. I can buy all apple devices in a year for 5 lakh, if you call that rich I have news for you kid. That is nothing in this world.

Also if you have doubts you can ping me i am sure I make in a month what you make in 6 months.

Google hasn't been advertising privacy to sell devices for last 2 years. Apple has been doing that
Apple did advertise privacy but now they are telling that they are doing CSAM detection. If you have something to hide, stop using Apple. It’s business. There is no legal contract between end users and Apple that apple can’t stop being so private anymore,

buyers have to show them with their wallet power but that wont happen. Apple didn’t get any hit on market share when they removed charger or not using usb c and still using the lightening connector or removal of headphone jack. its a duopoly market; Android or Apple. Apple is comparatively privacy enforced than android.

I completely agree with you on this. Govt should have no business in the private lives of the citizens. MS also used to suspend one drive memberships for naked pictures of little babies. Who knows if an innocent picture of a child with its parents may be treated as a potential sexual abuse. In future, govts can declare anything illegal and force apple to find the perpetrators.

there is a difference between being entirely unbiased (which no one can be) vs being acutely biased for or against.
I don’t mind admitting that I am biased towards apple for end user computing.

at the same time, I use proxmox as my home hypervisor and am (ashamed to admit) almost an evangelist for it.
I use Debian for home automation and love that too- I would always recommend a Linux derivative for server like uses so that makes me biased towards Linux too.

not a big fan of windows, not after the XP days I guess- but would still recommend a windows machine to someone who wants to get a useful machine at a moderate budget.

horse for courses as against being anti anything ..
OTOH, I am pretty certain that you’d never recommend a mba (or an iPad) for even the most obvious use case fit

In more than a few threads, the reason many people gave for buying Apple products was that they ensure privacy. In fact, I was thinking of moving to Apple for one of this reasons apart from them launching the M1 Air. And they do extensively advertise their pro-privacy stand, especially in the last few years.
So he is not wrong in calling out Apple on this turn of events. And I don't think any sane person who bought Apple devices for this pro-privacy approach, can be happy with this recent development. Just because I don't want govt or an Apple employee going through my stuff, doesn't mean I am upto something illegal. When a giant company like Apple bows down to such autocratic rulings, it shows that the world is headed towards a dangerous path. If people have watched 'V for Vendetta' or know anything about North Korea or even the stranglehold China has over their people, they will be definitely disturbed by this development. Not for nothing is it said that 'the road to hell is paved with good intentions'.

You can call out apple in this forum or any other social media. It’s not going to change much.

World is headed towards dangerous path when it comes to Big tech.

msankadi was doesn’t care if apple employees go through his photos but he cares if government does. It doesn’t make sense unless he has something to hide. Don’t you agree?. A reasonable user would prefer nobody to go through their things, but his response was not like a typical user and it showed his intention to hide from government alone.

Don’t expect that Apple cares about making us happy with all decisions. Apple always thinks that they know better and what to do.

were you happy when apple removed chargers/ headphone jacks and many android phone OEMs did the same following Apple?. So it’s a business and see it as a business.

but he cares if government does. It doesn’t make sense unless he has something to hide
So your argument to defend apple is people shouldn't ask for privacy as the ones asking for privacy have something to hide? According to your logic we should all just share everything in public, what is the need for privacy then?

My idea of privacy is I have the right to choose when and what to share about myself. apple is violating it like the other companies already do so now there is no reason to pay apple tax.

I don't understand your argument about this won't change anything? I cannot control if it changes the world. I can influence those who I am close to, on this forum and at other places. If I can educate or influence even 1 person to make the right decision based on facts, that is change. I can't change the millions of mindless folks who shop for xyz gadget, why should I care about their money if they don't themselves care about it enough to research before making an informed decision

My decision of moving to Apple was not privacy so I don’t really care that much about it.

In my opinion Privacy is a myth, Google sell it’s users data to advertisers and companies so that it can make profit and only then it offers a service like gmail for free. So nothing in this world comes free. You are selling your data to access google services and Android operating system.

But Apple is not selling the data to 3rd party like Google, they are selling the hardware instead. Different business models and no one is right or wrong here.

I usually don’t go to Windows or Android thread and call users there names, but those same people often hang here and call names like Apple Pro, Loyalist, Apologist, Fanboy, Kid etc

Rant: I usually visit many forums related to Audio, Fragrances etc and see no where this kind of behaviour gets tolerated except here. Heck even mods get bullied here, I remember this forum was such a nice place 10 years back. Now only a place remaining for a bunch of teenagers waiting to get their hands on the latest GPU for playing shitty games. No wonder why old members never came back.

Did you see last year's keynote that Cook or Apple delivered at product launch. He emphasized on the 'Privacy' part so much.
Whether it brings a change or not, one should always raise their voice if something wrong is being done. Even if it is just a company which takes a U-turn on something they sold their product on.

Everyone is calling him an Apple hater. At least he agrees to being one. Why are you or anyone else giving excuses for Apple's blunder. I can understand that you may have no choice but to live with it, like you pointed out, you did with the removal of headphone jack and now the charger etc. But that doesn't mean one stops calling the company out. And yes, ideally one should vote with their wallet which is the only thing which would actually make Apple reconsider this, but I can understand many people not being able to do so.

A business will do what's best for them is the oldest excuse and it has been used umpteen times for horrible crimes, like the Bhopal Gas tragedy or the illegal dumping of Mercury by Unilever at Kodaikanal or the umpteen pharma factories at Baddi, dumping untreated medical waste by digging borewells and hence polluting the whole ground water. There are many more examples. Sure Apple's mistake might not be as grave as these things I pointed out, but I am just trying to show you what's wrong with the thinking that a business is allowed to take immoral decisions, just because it is a business.

Here’s the full para what I wrote. You have quoted my comment selectively to support your question like a teenager

But you used to say along with others here that apple is sacrosanct and has never and will never violate their beloved users privacy... And so did apple.. They kept repeating the same line for 2 years... Which was accepted by gullible fans, now looks so hypocritical in hindsight... All their posters mocking Google for taking data outside the users phone

Now they and fans just wish that everyone forgets their fake hype around security. If only the world was so forgiving.

I have a request. Can you please check my post history here and find a place where I defended Apple on "Privacy"? I would really like to introspect if I actually did that.
I may have defended here and there on something else but I don't recollect doing this on privacy.

You have a tendency of bunching everyone who uses Apple devices on this forum in one group and you have hate towards them.

I am myself always telling I don't like many things that this company does, their puny 5GB icloud free space, removal of headphone jack (even when I actually never use the headphone jack and my 6S even has one) and not including basic stuff like charger in box in name of fake environmental concern.

The problem is not being apple hater, its the hypocrisy. Making big noise about apple's new child safety features calling it surveillance at the same time suggesting everyone how awesome windows is or even the xiaomi products are even after knowing how much telemetry MS collects or how Xiaomi is designated as Chinese military arm. The problem is with trolling/flame baiting behavior. The main reason I call him a ****ing retard, initially tried engaging with logic and reason but didn't work because of this retarded behavior. (I am slowly getting convinced that I should put control statements like Tienanmen Square and wumao and 1984 in my replies.)

Now, coming to what apple is doing, it is really bad. Right now, it is only implemented in US and clearly goes against 4th Amendment. not sure what legal repercussions could be but it is really bad. simply put if there is a hash for CP then in future there could be a hash for gay porn too. if a country like India/saudi arabia where the same sex relationships are not legal and the they want to track it using same technology, like someone on internet said, how would Tim Cook feel about it...

For, now, the only alternative that is becoming more and more obvious for me is to switch to pine phone with ubuntu touch. I think we as a technology forum should discuss about other alternatives as well as reason with logic and intelligence rather than trolling behavior.

You hit the nail right on the head man. That is exactly what we need to do. It definitely isn't easy to do. Long ago, I remember a guy from our group on XDA, the first thing he used to do when he got an android phone was remove everything related to Google from the phone. That was the time when it was easier to do, but I think it would be impossible right now as they have entrenched everything with their services and framework. He used to run his own mail server and everything and only used a handful of apps. I think it won't be easy to wean off from iOs/Android, but we need to at least try at some level.
