Hey Guys ..

I purchased an HP Pen Drive (16 GB) as i had to immediately take backup of some date.

The data amount was huge as well as i was left with abt 400 MB of free space.

There was a virus in the original comp which was removed by home pc of mine.

Now i came back home to xfer the data onto the PC to find that 2 folders are not getting copied onto the HDD. Giving me the error msg "Cannot Read from the specified device"

I thought that the connection mst have gone bad but when i checked the other folders i cud copy as well as read the data stored in them.

I re inserted the pen drive and checked again but the problem persists.

Strangely enough when i check for the properties regarding these two folders, it shows 68.x GB whereas the total capacity of the pen drive is 16GB only.

Whats wrong? Pen drive got problems or did the copying session went bad?

Any chance i can recover the data with ease?

The chkdsk has been giving me msg that cannot perform the task as it is being used by another process (which it isnt)
and wd u like to schedule this task the next time windows restarts?

Normal Chkdsk via windows without any options checked for fixing errors resulted in no reports.

Virus Scan?

Download UNLocker and Try To unlock The drive

open Winrar explorer goto Ur Frash drive...delete anything other than ur files

If that Doesnt help

The Copy Was not Done properly,Next time Use teracopy to Copy anything

I don't about solution to your problem, but one time one of pendrive shopkeeper told me that they can hack the pendrives to show large storing space it will show ur dat being stored but it will not wok after a while.

Are you sure you are running chkdsk on the correct drive?? The message above is usually displayed in two cases:
1. When you scan your system's root drive; since most of the files in tht drive are in use chkdsk won't continue but give this message.
2. Some process is currently using the drive. Here, it may be a virus. To confirm, just enable viewing all hidden and system files and check if some suspicious hidden file is present in ur flash drive. If yes, delete that file and check again. It its regenerated, its surely a virus.

Strangely enough when i check for the properties regarding these two folders, it shows 68.x GB whereas the total capacity of the pen drive is 16GB only.
Probably tht flash drive is kaput because my friend too had a drive in which the data got corrupted as soon as it was copied and later it showed exaggerated sizes!

^ its not kaput. those fake drives that are 4Gb and show 32Gb have false partitions made on them through some software. There was a thread on these fake drives here on TE with some software that could detect the actual size and reformat the fake drive.

The drive i ran chkdsk is correct. I too noticed it was strange to get those error messages on a non root drive.

No process was running via pen drive.

Always keep the hidden files in viewable mode.

Virus scan has been run on the pen drive properly twice. Detected and fixed.

I am hoping this is not the case but lets see.

In the mean time any more suggestions guys ..?
