I bought online a Samsung SATA DVD writer few days ago. Model is Samsung SH-223. Just discovered that its now not loading DVDs. The light just keeps blinking and DVDs are not detected.
What should I do? Return it to online dealer? Or should I go to a service center? Will they replace it or repair it?
I have the original bill and package.

If you have a pukka bill, RMA it, use the authorised service center.

Do call up the online dealer and blast him tho, so if he offers to replace the unit, take that up.

I have already emailed online dealer. I will wait for his response till tomorrow. If he doesn't responds, I will call him.

I do have pukka bill. How does RMA works exactly? I have to go to service center for RMA? Do they simply replace the drive hand-to-hand? Or do I have to wait for few days for replacement to come?

They 'may' check the drive condition, but usually errors reported are taken at face value. If no physical damage is present expect a new piece same time or max 3-4 days.

Just checked, local Service Center is closed today.

I will rather send it back to online dealer. Trying to contact him over email and phone.

^^ Send it back to him and demand for a new one, Its not fair taking your brand new writer to the RMA and getting an old rectified one

+1 for this, make him also work a bit, even tho it may not be his fault, he should be aware of it.

Rectified drive? I thought we get back a new drive after RMA :(

I have now asked dealer to provide me with a new replacement. Hoping that he responds positively.

^^ Yes you get a refurbished one, Send it back to the dealer
P.S- Did u check the drive on other systems?

I only have one system to check it in. However in this system I do have older Samsung DVD writer (IDE). Same DVDs are loading perfectly well in that drive. So its not a system problem.

This is sad. After no response from the online dealer, I called him up. He flatly refused to replace the writer saying that this is not the way business is done in India. I was surprised by his rude & harsh tone even though I was being very polite! :(
Will not be dealing with him in future unless absolutely required. I now feel sorry for the good iTrader ratings that I gave him here at TE

I will go for RMA to Nehru Place tomorrow though its very far off from my place. No other option left.

Did it ever work when you just installed it?

After it started working, did you do anything else?

I am asking because I had a problem when I just installed a new LG DVD writer in my system in place of my old Liteon IDE DVD writer.

It did not work. I was not using the molex to Sata power cable that came with the DVD writer.

When I changed the cable to the one that was supplied with the DVD writer, it worked fine. I have verified it later too that it does not work with the other cables that work with a Sata HDD.

I noticed there was a little difference between the two cables. Don't remember now what the difference was.

I got a samsung one sometime back and it flatly refused to play any DVD's. So I called the dealer, who came and exchnaged it with an LG one and that worked fine. The problem in the samsung one was that it would play cd's and vcd's but no dvds for some reason/

My DVD writer is working for 1 out of 10 DVDs. So I assume its due to weak lens and not cable.

Wow! You had a nice dealer. Mine refused to even discuss the issue. He said its Samsung's Service Center problem now.

Guys, I submitted the writer to Samsung Service Center at NP, Delhi. They said they will examine the drive and let me know status tomorrow. They will either repair it or replace it. In case replacement is required, it will take 15 days
