Hi DB,
There are actually no. of applications which work with 7-zip archives. They are :-
The two above are plugins for Total Commander
Of the above some are pure zip, unzip apps while others are file managers & 7-zip is part of the feature. So you can try all of them.
Lastly, 7-zip follows the true specifications. Some of the the programs above add bits that are possible but not really needed. Case in point see this
link . Here megaupload says tht the archive is not supported. That's because it doesn't use the true specs of 7-zip.
A good thing perhaps would be to ask the person which program did he zip into as well as see if there is some sort of checksum or md5sum verifier so you can verify somehow the integrity of the download. If neither of the programs work & nor can u get an md5/checksum verifier then you'll have to download & try again. It would be quite a learning experience in handling different UI's as well as archive managers.
One tip though. Don't have more than one archive manager or file manager running at the same time. There could be conflicts. The best way would be to download all of them & put all the downloads in a seperate folder. Then install one of them, see if it works or not with you .7z file. If it doesn't put it uninstall the program, move the installable to another folder. One never knows when a particular archive manager may be helpful. Then reboot & do the whole cycle again. So enjoy & learn at the same time. It's a good opportunity to see what else is available & what works.
Lastly, if something works, share with us what worked or didn't & u see tht weighing scale next to the permalink, use it
