Hi Guyz,

I have just brought a XFX HD 5870 from TE.. recently.
But, I am facing some issues and I dont know whether its a hardware fault or a driver....

I was using a 200 series card of nvidia, so I formatted the machine to be safe...
But, while booting win7 sometimes a VIOLET screen flashes just before the welcome screen...

Then today, found a new issue..
I started the 3D Mark Vantage and the screen froze VIOLET coloured after the first gpu test..I had to restart the machine.
Then again in 3D mark 06 same kind of a situation happened...

But when I tried that again I was able to complete the test.

During some games like gow , Fifa 09 its stuttering for a sec or 2 but the frames in fraps is showing around 55...Dont know what is happening there also ...

I dont know what is happening why is this VIOLET screen flashing...
Is this a hardware fault or a driver problem..
Currently using 10.8.

Thanks
Dragon Hunter

^^

Highly probable its a driver fault. Go to the 10.5 Radeon drivers, and let us know. Make absolutely sure that 10.5 is actually the driver being used once installed. Use GPU-Z, CCC to verify the versions.

Used the driver sweeper and installed the 10.4 driver ( as I saw it was the most stable )....

But still its giving a violet screen flash during booting just before the welcome screen...

The temp during 3D Mark Vantage is around 68c - 72c

I think its not high temp...

Thanks for the reply...

Hmmm.
Try with 10.5's then as said above.
If that doesn't help then RMA (Man, dealing with Rashi wont be easy)

if u have tried drivers change then i suggest RMA coz once hardware start to give u problem u should change it in ur case RMA it asap

its better to have a good card also make sure u are using driver sweeper and cc cleaner to clean drivers

though i dont think its driver issue if u ask me

though i coukld be wrong so RMA i say

Re-dock the card once. Blow hard on the empty PCI.E bay. You asked anks22402 about this..?

Yeah i spoke to him because i used this card for like 20 days where i have ran vantage , 3d mark and also gaming never had any issue with it.. I m using i7 setup his is 8400. bios flashed ? needed

As far my knowledge goes...I found out that my bios was outdated....

Mine is.... 012.014.............

and the latest I guess is .... 012.019.......

I think that can cause a problem.....

^do it carefully and do not reboot during the flashing process. if you reboot it the card wont be detected and problems could increase.

look for a tutorial before trying it.

Nope I dont think it will void the warranty , its like a update from the company itself so I dont think there will be any issues. As with anysort of bios flashing/updating make sure you dont lose power.

drangon hunter sir-

Please understand that when starting a query in the technical section, please refrain from taking the name of the seller.

Though not necessary while troubleshooting your issue, you may say it was bought recently and a used one from someone on TE (most regular members would know the person anyways).

But without ascertaining the exact nature of the problem at your end and the cause, mentioning name in the very first post is highly undesairable imho.

It may malign his/her reputation or at least cast a shadow of doubt on him/her having sold a faulty product in the minds of others, even if such a doubt may or may not exist at your end.

Coming to the issue at hand,

- As mentioned by many already, ATI 5xxx cards and driver issues with win7 are not uncommon.

Most have found an older version, depsnding on model, to work better than the latest version iirc.

I have heard of grey screen. Can you please post a picture of the violet screen?

- Please check if your motherboard BIOS is up to date too.

- Also do check if the card is seated properly in the slot and the power connectors are properly inserted.

(The card should slot in freely and flush with the back of the case, without having to be pushed to hard.

One may need to loosen the mobo screws and tighten after re-alignment if mobo is too close or too far from the back of the case.

While pushing in the PCIe power connector, it's usually better to grab the bunch of wires that exit the connector instead of the connector itself.)

Can you please post a picture of your case internals with the side panel removed? :)

@OP:

Here is a comprehensive guide to flashing you VGA BIOS. Some pointers...

1. If possible flash the VGA card on a motherboard which has IGP or a secondary PCI.E x 16 dock.

2. If you cannot manage and IGP board use a board with a second PCI.E x 16 dock and keep a secondary VGA on stand by.

3. Take a back up of the original BIOS and burn it on a USB/CD platter.

Reason being, if your card is bricked for some reason, you can use the IGP or plug the bricked card on the second PCI.E and get to the Windows screen using the second stand by VGA (as primary). Your P43 C51 does not have either.

EDIT:

At the same time flash your BIOS to the latest. Use this tool. Try the board flash before you do the VGA flash.
