Guys,
I use windows Xp pro and each time i start the system the progress bar takes 50 times (while booting). DO anybody know what is the problem for this ?
My configuration is

AMD Athlon 2400 XP+
Asus Motherboard
40 GB HD (seagate)
768 MB of RAM

P.S: i didnt install too many softwares, my HD is not corrupted with viruses.
Even if i format the whole disk and install XP once again it takes the same time.I checked this for windows 2000 also.

I'm not able to get rid of this plz help guys.

i think there is a hardware prob.

Try booting using different RAM modules,remoove all IDE devices (except the HDD ofcource) and finally the add-on cards like modems/sound cards etc.

When the Progress bar runs more than 9 times I empty out the Prefetch directory which is located under C:\Windows and the bar does the normal 5 - 7 runs. This works for me every time.

If you run Optimise System from the Microsoft Freeware BOOTVIS ver 1.3.37.0 this also can reduce the bar count in XP.

do one more thing installed the mobo chipset drivers from the mobo cd :p sometimes it causes this problem too.

update xp with latest patches n all. there is about 100mb of patches after sp2.

delete the contents of prefetch dir as Eazy told and install the latest drivers for all your hardware.

kumar bhai,

as you said i removed the cd Burner (samsung), and the count decreased to 24.

now it has reduced from 15 to 5.

Hey Guyz, I've P4 Processor, 915GAV chipset, 1GB 400FSB DDR & 256MB 333FSB DDR that makes it to 1.25GB RAM, i've connected a DVD burner but its not on the boot list in bios, i've 200GB SATA 7200RPM HDD, but my comp is takin 7 minutes to boot to logon screen (The Damn progress Bar runs 70 times), i've been following this thread for past 2 days n i've been able to tweak settings as guyz had suggested but still, the best so far that i've been able to reduce it to is about 3 minutes now. Now here comes the weird part. If my system is shutdown for lets say more than about an hour or so without being switched on it takes this much time (i mean 3 minutes as of now) to boot to logon, but if i shutdown n restart n number of time later to this it will take between 45-60 seconds. I've written a batch file to clear Prefetch everytime system restarts, that did the trick to some extent, but when the system is not in use for long time n i switch it on this is happening.In this 200GB HDD 100 GB is in NTFS & other 100GB in FAT32. I've tried formatting n reinstalling the XP twice, but stille the same problem.i also wanna tell few more things i also had connected a PATA 40GB HDD of 5200RPM in the system which i've disconnected now. Can i use this HDD??Also the RAM FSB is not matching....how much is this affecting my system???n can anyone plz help me thru this problem of long booting time???for your info i'm gonna also post the readings i got from BOOTVIS which i got just before posting this thread....the graph is just too big to post, so i'm just typin in the values
Disk Init Time:2.05 Seconds
Driver Init Time:49.16 Seconds
Registry+PageFile Init Time:32.57 Seconds
Video Init Time:6.75 Seconds
Now interesting part between 91st second & 108th Second there is no activity, but disk utilisation is almost averaging above 95%
Logon+Service Init Time:73.65 Seconds
Shell Init Time:44.72 Seconds
Check the boot activity graph below:crash:

Hi, Thx for replying, which software i got to use for running tests on RAM & HDD, n wat do i hv to look for in those tests???Again in continuation of the long descreptive thread posted by me, here is another symptom that i wanna bring to everyones notice. Yesterday night i left the system for download for a while n had set the timer for autoshutdown, today morning i switched it on, n it said some file was missing, this is also another symptom that i forgot to mention yesterday. Sometimes it just doesn't boot but instead says there is some file missing, later after a couple of minutes i switch on the machine again, it boots like a brand new machine.I don't think its got anything to do with the rAM coz i've used this combo of RAMs for quite a long time now. Never had any problems. But will surely give it a try. Plz help me its driving me crazy:mad: :huh:

@bejay ... first thing to check is that all the drives are running in DMA mode and not PIO mode... check this in Device Manager under IDE controllers / Primary and Secondary channels.

Hi easy, i tried checking wat u said, i can see 2 Primary & 2 Secondary IDE Channels, in the
First Primary IDE Channels
* first Primary IDE channel - Device 0 & Device 1
in Device 0
- transfer mode is set as:DMA if Available
- current transfer mode is showing as:Not Applicable
in device 1
- transfer mode is set as:DMA if Available
- current transfer mode is showing as:Not Applicable

* second Primary IDE channel - Device 0 & Device 1
in device 0
- transfer mode is set as:DMA if Available
- current transfer mode is showing as:Ultra DMA Mode 2
in device 1
- transfer mode is set as:DMA if Available
- current transfer mode is showing as:Not Applicable

Next is Secondary IDE Channels

* first Secondary IDE channel - Device 0 & Device 1
in Device 0
- transfer mode is set as:DMA if Available
- current transfer mode is showing as:Ultra DMA Mode 5
in device 1
- transfer mode is set as:DMA if Available
- current transfer mode is showing as:Not Applicable

* second Secondary IDE channel - Device 0 & Device 1
in device 0
- transfer mode is set as:DMA if Available
- current transfer mode is showing as:Not Applicable

look if u guyz speak in riddles i can't get it, watz that SMART tests u r talkin about???can u be a bit more specific

Your HDD seems to be running in DMA 5 which is fine.

For SMART info - download freeware Diskcheckup from PassMark PC benchmark and test software - this will tell you the the SMART readings for your HDD. Or you can get this info from Everest if you have that installed.

Check if there are any bad sectors on your HDD ... to do that go to START button and then in RUN type CMD and this will open a Command window which is like a DOS window - here type "CHKDSK C:" and if you have more than one partition also run with D: and E: to check all partitions or HDDs. Chkdsk will give you info about bad sectors on your HDDs.

ive noticed this happens when you have an ide device connected via an ide cable but power input not connected, that is for example your hard disk, data cable connected but molex connector not connected, so make sure there is nothing like that in this case

Hey Eazy, i hv doen chkdsk manytimes to check for bad sectors but it ain't showing anything, initially even i had the same doubt, but nothing, i'll try the SMART TEST now, but pls keep suggesting, i' goin cranky coz of this problem

Hey Rave mine is a SATA HDD 200GB, i've connected 2 cables to it, i don't know which is data or which is molex,one is data cable(red tape like thing) & other the power chord, is it right that it requires only 2 cables or more is required??

Also one more info, there are 4 SATA ports in my mother board, O,1,2,3, n my HDD is connected to Port-1, should i try changing the port??? will it help???will my system boot???

Also can you tell me how to start a new thread in here
