Rumored specifications:

- Custom triple-core IBM Power PC CPU
- AMD R700-based GPU with Shader Model 4.1 (architecturally equivalent to the HD4000 series)
- 512 MB RAM

Controller specs:

- 6" touchscreen with single-touch response
- Front-facing camera
- D-pad

- Possibility of being used as a Wii sensor bar

On 25th April, Nintendo released an official statement confirming that the successor to the world's best selling video-game console Wii will make a debut at the E3 2011 to be held between June 7th-9th at LA and that Nintendo will showcase a playable model of the system while officially announcing the specifications. Nintendo confirms that 86.01 million units of the Wii were sold between 2006 and March 2011.

Rumors suggest that the console will be far more powerful than the X360 and the PS3. Nintendo intends to put the console on sale starting F.Y. 2013 i.e March 2012 onwards.

from what is being rumored in the internet the console's GPU wont be much faster than the xenos GPU in the x360 but there will be specific situations when the wii2 (project cafe's) GPU will be significantly faster than the xenos GPU. Till now people are expecting a HD 4770 derived GPU in the new console and nintendo is claiming that the console will be able to do 1080p 3D (native) but if indeed is a HD 4770 derivative then nintendo's claim of 1080p 3D is not going to be true as the HD 4770 is at best as quick as a HD 4850 and is usually around a 8800 GT and people know that these two cards cant handle 1080p let alone 3D comfortably

Says who? I play all my games @1080p with my HD4850 and with only a couple of recent titles struggling to maintain steady frames when Shadows, HDR, SSAO and AA are piled on.

^And not to mention with the kind of optimisation console devs will take into account. On an outdated 7800GTX modified chip, games like GOW 3 and Uncharted were rendered without a single frame drop throughout the game! It is another thing, they weren't 1080p though.

I have owned nearly every Nintendo's handheld console (GameBoy, GameBoy lite, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advanced, Nintendo DS lite) but never a nintendo Home console, and i am pretty sure i am not gonna get this one either. Better off waiting for new xbox/playstation which'll come out in 2014, and hopefully i'll get a paid job by then and will be able to buy it day 1. :)

@Ethan_Hunt you have just said it yourself bruv. To run most games on a HD 4850 or 8800 GT you need to compromise on the image quality. And I am certain its not only a "couple of recent titles" that struggle on those cards...pretty much every game released anno 2009 did struggle to maintain playable fps at high image quality settings on those cards @ 1080p.

I can list a few:

1. just cause 2

2. crysis & crysis warhead

3. Battlefield BC 2

4. COD BO

5. Metro 2033

6. Mafia II

7. GTA IV

8. Splinter Cell Conviction

9. Dirt 2

10. F1 2010

11. Civi 5

12. Lost Planet 2

13. Red Faction Guerilla

etc etc

@Gannu i agree with you in this respect that since console developers do not have to take into account compatibility for widely varying hardware configurations, they can optimize a particular game to extract the maximum amount of juice from the console hardware. But as nintendo is claming to do native 1080p as well as 3D i simply donot believe it is possible even with optimizations if really an HD 4770 derivative is going to be used.

Just remember the time before the launch of ps3 and x360, both M$ & Sony claimed their consoles can do native 1080p but even to this day all of the most graphically impressive titles run at 720p or even below it. My point being no amount of optimization can overcome deficiency in the core hardware.

@Jasku. The price point is definitely going to be >350 USD seeing how the 3DS is 250 USD

With the touchscreen enabled controller Nintendo wants to make your home a big time DS. :)

Although the stuff looks impressive, the official specs are something to look forward to.

I reckon you mean 8800GTS/9800GTX? Isnt that a more apt comparison.

@Aphro_EVO no I meant what I said, the HD 4850 is as fast as a 9800 GTX+ and in turn faster than 8800 GTS 512/ 9800 GTX. The HD 4770 on the other hand was the first 40nm GPU ever and it had 640 shaders & ddr5 memory on a 128 bit bus. In performance terms it was between the 8800GT/ 9800 GT (112 SP) and HD 4850. It was mostly faster than both 8800GT/9800GT & HD 4830 but slightly slower than HD 4850. So if the wii2 / project cafe/ stream has a derivative of that GPU, then it wont be able to handle native 1080p and 3D@1080p.

Hope I have made myself clear

Got it. But that doesn not sound good. I was thinking of getting myself this console as soon as it would launch, Dec 2012, but if it is not atleast a 4870 with 512 MB dedi I would not get it.

bro if nintendo surprises everybody by launching the console with a derivative of HD 4870/4890 then it will be in a better position to live up to their claims but if it happens the other way round(derivative of HD 4770) then we all know the outcome. BTW it wont be a smart thing to buy this console as the next xbox or ps will definitely launch with dx11 class graphics and moreover whatever nintendo does with this console it wont be the generational leap the x360/ps3 were over their predecessors.

In the console world, currently Full HD means rendering at 600~720p with medium quality settings and then up scaling the image to 1080p and applying some post processing magic. Comparing to how these GPU's have to render native at 1080p on PC's is kind of moot. The so called Full HD on consoles is rendering only 30~45% the number of pixels that a PC as to render at Full HD resolution. So, while the image resolution would be there, you would be hard pressed to find any "High Definition" in the image. A HD4xxx series GPU should be more than enough for that kind of work if you ask me. Also if the graphical elements of the games are kept simple, it would be quite easy to render native at Full HD.

Nintendo seems to have gotten into the habit of releasing consoles that are slightly faster than the previous gen hardware of its competitors. Wii was comparable to PS2 and XBOX than PS3 and XBOX 360. Now Wii 2 would be comparable to PS3 and XBOX 360. I guess the successors of PS3 and XBOX 360 would be the ones to bring Native Full HD resolutions to the console world.

The "Wii U"

Please people pour out your feedback and comments....
