Only recently got interested in gaming and so bought myself a modded play-station 2 ( the slim version). So ps2 users , pls tell me how to best take care of the console.I heard that over-heating is an issue on the ps2 slim.So what's the average amount of time one can safely spend playing games on it without damage to the console?? i.e for how many hrs. can you run it continuously ??


What's the correct procedure to play games?? Do you switch on the console(press the main button on the console when the green light appears) and then insert the game or do you first insert the game and then switch on the ps2 ?? Does it really matter which way you do it ?? I also want to know , how do you actually exit from games ?? I don't see any exit buttons ,so is it okay to just turn off the console once you come to the main menu screen after exiting from the game mission?? Really pls. don't laugh at me----- i am a total noob when it comes to these things.

Also torrent sites have a lot of ps2 games for download.My question is can we just download these games, burn them onto any dvd and play those on the ps2 ?? Is there any special procedure for burning these games onto a dvd disc ?? And what discs do you use for this purpose ?? I know it's easier to buy pirated games from the market but not every title is available.
 
And finally ---- at times the ps2's dvd drive fails to read the game discs --- so i have to reinsert those game dvds in the drive and restart my ps2 for them to load. Is this normal or does it mean that my ps2 is faulty ?? (mind you those game dvds are slightly scratched so don't know whether the problem lies with game dvds)

Anyway pls. help me out guys.This is the first time I have tried something like this.

There are not too many heating issues you have to worry about. Only the first few batches of the slim line PS2s had heating problems. I have played for 5-6hrs straight on a slim modded PS2, and never had any problems.

The game has to be inserted and then you start the console. Do not open the tray when light is green. Not advisable for any CD/DVD player. Yes, you just turn off the console when you hit the menu screen. You can turn it off before that too, but you may lose your save points in game.

Just download and burn onto a DVD+R or DVD-R. Most modded consoles do not support RW discs. There is no special procedure. Just burn at 1x-2x and you should be set.
 
Till now haven’t heard of much of it’s heating issues with the recent slim versions.I had played on it for agonizingly long hours & still none of the games failed nor did the console lock up.Plus I had also spoken to one of my friend who said that he had crossed the limit by actually keeping his PS2 on overnight & sitting idle on a game.

For loading a game DVD,don’t press the Power button on the console before you insert any DVD in it as it would come up with only the Memory card & CD Player menu.Leave the console off & insert the DVD in slowly over the Tray.Be extremely careful as this version of PS2 has the lens laid across in such a pattern that it’s dangerously closed to the DVD placement area.A slight bit pressure while inserting it wrongly & you would wind up damaging the lens.Then power on the console.
Tip: If you want to playback a movie DVD then long press the Power button(approx for 3 secs) & then release it.

In order to exit the games you could manually do it from the in-game menu but it will only bring you till the Main menu of the game.You’ll need to power off the console completely for the game to be turned off by holding down the power button until it hits red.

Downloading PS2 ISO’s from torrent sites is highly illegal.If you want to legally back up games then you can do so by using DVD Decrypter & creating back up by burning them at lowest possible speeds on a blank DVD media except a DVD rewritable media.

As for your last query,those DVD’s which fail to read at times might be because the DVD might be corrupt or at times if the console has been idle for few days then it would be dust settlement on the lens which usually causes this.Allow it to warm up for sometime & then try playing some game on it.
 
This is what sony's ps2 website says about playing games on ps2:-

To start a game::-
Press the Reset button on the front of the system and make sure the indicator light turns green, indicating that the system is on.
Press the open button on the front of the system.
Set the disc in the disc holder with the label side facing up.
Press down gently on the disc until all three tabs on the disc holder are above the surface of the disc.
Press the PUSH label in the disc cover to close it.
After the disc cover is closed, the game will start.
To end a game:-

Warning: Do not touch a disc that is still spinning when the disc tray is opened.
Press the open button on the front of the system.
Hold down the black center part of the disc holder, and then lift the disc by the edges.
Close the disc cover.
Press the Reset button to display the main menu.

Anyway, could anyone tell me how much do the component cables for the ps2 cost, whether they are worth the trouble and where to get these ?
 
the cables aren't available anywhere in India. I've tried Sony World's, nobody has them. Your best bet is gray market or ebay. I got 'em from ebay for some 20 aussie $ incld shipping.

And no they aren't worth it :P PS2 looks crap on my 26inch LCD HDTV, I've gone back to composite on an SDTV with my ps2.
