The console hacking types have taken it to the PlayStation 3 and have successfully created disc image files of games. By using an install of Linux on the console, games such as Madden 07, Resistance and Genji have all been ISO dumped and released on the Internet. Being images from Blu-ray media means that we’re dealing with current file sizes between Madden’s 7.08 GB and Resistance’s 17.53 GB.

Sony said prior to the PS3 launch that Resistance would use nearly the entire 25 GB space afforded by a single-layer Blu-ray disc. Developer Insomniac said, however, that the final size of the gold master was around 16 GB. Ted Price of Insomniac writes: "As we moved into the final week of finishing up the game we made two big changes which dropped the size of the final disc to just over 16Gb – still pretty large nonetheless. What were the changes? We removed PAL movies and further improved our data compression."

There’s still a small discrepancy between the developer’s quote and the size of the image dump. The difference is due to padding files, which contains no data but is there to aid in load times. According to Mmmkay of Beyond3D forums, the file type breakdown for Resistance sees padding making up 1.9 GB, FMV 7 GB, audio 2.24 GB and game data 6.12 GB.

The console hacking community may still be a long way from cracking the PlayStation 3, but the investigation into game files is the same way that the PSP homebrew effort began.

Not to mention the time it will take to download them, specially if you're on indian ISPs.

^ Lol...yeah exactly :P .... wud take arnd 9 continous days to download Resistance on 256k :P Not worth going thru d trouble imo.

Edit : Damn i forgot ... one will also need a Blu ray burner to play d games :P

Looks like sony intentionally bloated the game size to promote the blue ray format, and keep the piracy in check ... atleast the online downloads :(

lol..not to advocate piracy, but any guesses on how long it'll take for blu-ray blanks/writer prices to crash once it gets mainstram :P

happened with cd's, with dvd's an will happen with blu-ray and hd-dvd too

Even if you can't download them, the pirated versions will be easily available in Asia.... I mean, a Bluray burner is not that expensive for a pirate. And the disks will also become cheaper soon - the reason they are expensive is because they are rare.

Two possibilities:

1. Blu-ray becomes popular and everything becomes cheap.

2. Bluray fails, you can't pirate the games, but that probably means that Sony has failed miserably with the PS3, so it would hardly matter anyway.

I don't think it will really help curb piracy much... The size will not be too daunting in a year or so (at least in places other than India). Verizon has a really fast FIOS service in the US, and Comcast has one too... (I only get 4mbps, but in other parts of the US, the situation differs).

And we don't even need to talk about Europe, Japan and South Korea.

Add one more possibility, HD-dvd does well in the consumer segment while Blu-ray does well for the ps3 alone. There could be a real possibility to this happening as HD-dvd is leading the format war currently. The DVD Wars

So wats wrong in dat ? if it helps curb Piracy........ :P

Padding and stuff doesn't help curb piracy nor does uncompressed data. Padding was used for psp games as well but that can be easily taken care of, even by end-users.

Which, as you notice, was option no. 2. Sony increased the price of the PS3 by a huge amount, faced huge delays, and faces huge startup losses due to the Blu-ray. If they had gone HD-DVD some of that would have been avoided (HD-DVDs have been around longer and came out earlier). If they went DVD they would have been out ages ago. So basically, if the Bluray fails in the consumer segment it means that the PS3 is pretty much a failure (or seriously misguided at any rate).

NOTE: Bluray could do well with or without the PS3.

^^ Nope Sony is miscalculating, that the bluray format will be piggybacked by PS3's overwhelming response. What they didnt counter was for 1 yr lead to M$, and the underdog Wii.

The fact that blu-ray being cracked and put on internet for download doesn't really matter to those on Indian ISP - So we lose eitherway...

(And AvP = Aliens vs Predator, movie)

Edit : Ah, thank-you Bluffy :P
