@ Shripad: waiting for your PS3 result..

Bought Isopropyl Alcohol nd the Thermal Compound, had to settle wid CoolerMaster's HTk-002, hope this will do the job..need to get a heat gun from somewhere now...

I had local torx set, but it was too thick to slide it in. So ended up using regular flat head micro screw driver kit which I had for ages ( the crome coloured set you get in local shops ).

Will add pics later tonight or tomorrow as I get time. Just finished putting the PS3 back together, and it seems to be switching on normally and played videos just fine :D

Game testing will be done by my friend when he takes it back home. Have made a complete video of this. Took a lot longer than I first thought it would. Actually I got bored once the major work was done. Finally put it all back together when friend dropped by to help :P

If anyone from Mumbai needs the heat gun, its available for 1200 bucks here ( 300-500°C adjustable ) if you want to buy it. And no, hair drier probably wont work :P

@Shripad: Good going dude...will be interested in ur pics too..

I got done wid the main part, heat gun usage and thermal compound application...but dint reassemble it yet coz thermal pads for a couple of chips were missing, so thought will check out some computers shops for them...borrowed the heat gun from a local electrical shop, but it dint have any indication or any other setting so not sure about what temperature it was heating upto...

Guys from Hyderabad, can you suggest me any particular shop to buy thermal pads?

I have another question...just in case I dont get any thermal pads, can I just reassemble without the pads?if not, then whats the alternative?
Attaching a pics indicating the pads, which are missing in mine..marked in red..

No you shouldn't do that! The thermal pads are there for a reason. It serves the same purpose as that of the TIM. Conducts heat from the chip IHS to the heatsink. Although, they are inferior to the conduction capabilities compared to the TIM, they last slightly longer compared to the TIM itself. A TIM is required where the heat dissipation from the chip is higher and the conductivity is critical - in this case the RSX and the Cell chips.

I'm not sure where you could source thermal pads in Hydy - perhaps Rave could help you out. You may PM a Regd. Dealer here - katmandude, he *may* have spare thermal pads in stock.

Have left a PM to Rave regarding the same...did check out the thermal compounds thread of Kathmandude, will contact him if I fail to get the same here...

You should get thermal pads in store that sells usual electronic supplies like IC chips, spares etc etc. They are widely available here.

@TH, I used Eastman heat gun. Actually my friend purchased it from a shop in Ghatkoper. If you want details I will ask em. Looks like good quality flame less heat gun. Has airflow and temp adjustment and display.

I did go to some electrical shops for it but dint find any..will try looking for it again..

hey shripad where is the video log mate :P it would be really help full if you could upload it to you tube or something :)

spent whole day with family outside shopping and watching Piece of utter boring crap 'Blue' :P

Video is very big, so will need to edit it before uploading.

I have ordered the thermal tape from eBay...will be receiving it in 3-4days...but the problem is that I have already applied thermal paste to the PS3 processors, a couple of days back, and have left the board just like that..so u think i'll have to clean the same and reapply it once I decide to reassemble?

^Apply the thermal paste just before you're about to seat the heatsink else it'd be contaminated with dust and other foreign particles which would hamper the heat conduction. Clean the paste and store the board safely so long as the thermal pads arrive.

PS: How did you clean the dried thermal paste for the first time?

^That's perfectly fine. :)

As for the application of the thermal paste you do not have to smear the paste and spread it - just have a rice grain/small blob worth quantity on top of the chip's IHS and once the heatsink's seated, the paste would spread evenly.

^^just that I dint wanna take any chance nd end up with a fail fix...nywys thanks for ur advice..will keep updates posted when I receive the tape..

i can see that all of u guys don't have any knowledge about repairing a gaming console i so if any of u want any help in this thing i can help u just call me on my phone no 9250133815 and the name is rahul

I might be interested in buying the Heat Gun. No real reason but would be fun to have one around.
