PS3 purchase and some doubts

I apologize for not posting in the thread - 'A noob's guide to which console to get!'.

I have already decided to buy a PS3 and just to make sure I don't put it off again I bought a game (Devil May Cry 4 - Greatest Hits) for it already. Now when I saw the side of the game it says - Region 1. Will it be a problem? Is PS3 region free like the PSP.

I also plan to buy Gran Turismo 5: Academy Edition. Will I be able to import cars from my PSP garage in this game? Also is the garage sync both ways?

I plan to get it from Alfa (Mumbai) or 'The Games Shop' (where I bought the game from today). The difference is only 250 bucks. Can I get a better deal. The guy told me that he can give me the 320 GB PS3 without move kit and reduce 2000 bucks for it.

I have a PSN account for my PSP can I use it for the PS3 as well? How many devices can be linked to 1 PSN account?

Please advice guys.

Games are region free for ps3. So effectively a ps3 game purchased from any place/country will work on it.
Movies however are region locked. Indian ps3 will cater to region C (and ofc the region free movies)

Move has relatively less number of quality games. IMO only Sports Champion is worthy enough of a purchase. So not opting for a move bundle will be wise. You can always pick one later on.
Picking a ps3 from the mkt section/other sites will save you money if you are fine with a pre owned console.

Happy Gaming. :)

Absolutely not. Games are region free; DLCs and Blu-Ray movies aren't.

Yes you can. Although, I haven't personally done this, I was able to dig up a post from GameFAQ boards, which neatly provided the steps for it:

Connect your PSP to PS3 via USB
Run GT5, go into 'Options' and select 'PSP System'
wait for 'Waiting for connection' notice on the PS3.
When you get that load GT PSP, go into 'Options' and select the 'Other' tab.
Select 'Transfer Garage Data'

Kazunori Yamauchi had confirmed this in his interview to G4:

G4: Are you going to be tying in GT Portable with GT5 at all? Will there be any connectivity?

Yamauchi: I think you’ll find that when you play the PSP version of Gran Turismo, it runs at a faster tempo. The gameplay is a lot faster than the previous versions of Gran Turismo we’ve had, where you’ll be able to gather cars quickly, you can actually share cars with your friends, trade cars with your friends and we’re going to make it so that you can actually export the cars for the PSP version into Gran Turismo 5, so you can export your garage.

Ditch the Move kit, unless you're into the whole motion controls thing. Get the basic version and shop doesn't matter, as long as you're getting the warranty card stamped. On second thought, shop does matter. If you pick one up from Croma, then you can avail their 2-year extended warranty for 750 bucks, which is what I did. It's a safe investment. But this is completely optional.

I don't think your PSN account is tied to 'A' particular device. It's a universal account and can be accessed through any Sony device which supports this functionality.

@Spacescreamer - Thanks for replying. The only that worries about buying a pre-owned device is that device turning out to be a lemon. The only time it makes sense is if I am buying a modded console from a local seller. I think I will buy pre-owned games to save money after my wallet recovers from tomorrow's shock.

I am a bit undecided about the move kit. Will getting rid of it affect the warranty?

iittopper - Thanks for replying. The Fifa 13 Edition of the new Super Slim PS3 was available at Alfa and retails for around 27000/- bucks. The main reason I bought the game is to ensure that I go and buy the PS3 tomorrow without fail. I don't want to own the new version. The guy at Alfa told me - The current models will soon be replaced with that one and the current ones will sell at 22050/- bucks after a while at Alfa and they have already stocked up on the current models. I don't know why but I want to get the current version and not the new version. Also don't want to risk infibeam a friend had a very bad experience out there.
Ethan_Hunt - Thanks for replying and answering a number of questions. I was planning to go to Cromas after Alfa. I was thinking on the lines of getting the 160 GB version and later switch the drive with a 1 TB HDD. It looked simple in the video but I don't usually like to tinker with devices because the moment I do something goes terribly wrong.

P.S.:

Totally disagree. The way that game works I feel like killing myself. Only 4 manufacturers at a time and most of the times the cars are useless and at times you end up buying some odd car (Daihatsu Midget II D type ’98 and Honda TODAY G ’85 (YUA) in my case) and the next set of manufacturers have the car you really want but oopsy daisy you are just short of credits/points. Time to race and earn again. Driving the Midget should be fun though :P

There's a console with the CFW 3.55 in the Market section. I am quite surprised it hasn't been sold despite the low price it is retailing for! It may be a good idea to grab that. You can always ask the seller to provide you some DOA warranty so if it turns out to be dud, you can return it back and ask for a refund. The newer slims are built like a tank compared to the phats which were prone to untimely demises after a period of usage.

I don't suppose you can use a 1 TB internal drive with the console (or to put it correctly - readily) because the height of the drive is more than the usual 2.5" drive and might require some tinkering with the console.

Gannu - Thanks for replying. Couldn't read your post in the morning just saw the race (kudos to Kobayashi) and ran like hell to Alfa. I was aware of the CFW 3.55 PS3 in market section but I really wanted to play GT online (haven't done it yet).

Bought the 320 GB version and exchanged the Medieval Move Kit for - GT5: Academy Edition.

Other games I got for the system -
DMC 4
GTA 4 & Episodes from Liberty City
MK: Komplete Edition

During GTA 4 installation I noted a problem - Stuttering Audio. The game ran with stuttering Audio. When I restarted the PS3 I noted that the logo at start comes with stuttering audio. A bit of googling revealed that 5.1 Dolby through optical causes this problem. I had selected 5.1 DTS and Dolby in the audio options and the audio output was through Optical output. Unticking 5.1 Dolby option fixed the problem in both cases.

The last 2 games I played DMC 4 runs in Stereo Mode and MK runs in DTS Mode. The links that I found were pretty old has anyone had this problem and is there a fix for it? Already updated it to the latest firmware. Using Sony DZ-510 for audio.

In MK:Komplete Edition do I really have to by a voucher/code to play online? I thought Multiplayer was free on all PS3 games. Has anyone bought codes/Vouchers for it? Also didn't try Multiplayer on GT5 the game wanted to update to version 2.08. Didn't do it yet will install the game and update it next weekend.

A few questions -
Can I keep a demo download in the background and still play a game?
I have 2 MBPS Faitel connection but after FUP it goes down to 512 KBPS. Will 512 kbps be sufficient?
The USB keyboard (MK250) worked fine with the PS3 and I am sure the mouse will to but can they be used for games?

@prabs Yes, you can put downloads in the background and play a game. Are you planning to playing MP on 512? Also, why do you want to go back to keyboard and mouse gaming?

AsidXxx - Thanks for replying. I have tried Killzone a number of times at my friend's place. I am really bad at aiming and after a while I always gave up because I would rather play something while I was there than constantly die. Now of course I can learn at my leisure but I would still like to know the possibilities.

By the end of the month Failtel always brings me down from 2 mbps to 512 kbps. Can't help it.

You will easily get adapted to the controller when playing an FPS such as Killzone. I thought the same when I started Resistance but got used to it pretty quickly. And there's a bit of auto-aim support as well. Not much though. :P

And congrats on the console! Get hold of the exclusives and begin the partay!

@prabs
You can look into my FS thread for a few exclusives and games for sale :)

@prabs As @Gannu rightly put it, even I was a bit apprehensive about adapting to a controller while aiming. Trust me, you'll get a hang of it in no time.
@Gannu Cant we have a PS3 exclusive thread? No, nothing on jailbreaking. Just what we can do with our PS3, legitimately.

I think we had a thread for that. Might have to search. Did not sticky it because it did not have much response.

+1

Can't play on weekdays. I missed out on a lot of games will have to play extra hard to catch up.
@fLUX - Best of luck with the sale mate. Really low on cash at the moment.
@Gannu - Can you please change the title to something more appropriate? Couldn't find the option to change the title also the question was what do I set as the title?

Is anybody able to login to their PSN accounts via browser? I can login through the PSP and PS3 but not browser. Need to report the Dolby 5.1 issue.

@Gannu - The issue with Dolby 5.1 Output is stuttering Audio. The PS3 is connected to Sony DZ-510 via optical cable. In the Audio Settings I had selected output via Optical and selected both 5.1 Dolby Digital and 5.1 DTS and kept the previously selected formats as well. I have 5.1 DD and 5.1 DTS selected on my WD Live as well without issues.

Even when the PS3 boots the music while showing the logo stutters. I initially didn't realize it was a problem until I started GTA 4.

Googled for a bit and found that the issue is caused if Dolby 5.1 is selected. I unselected the option and only kept DTS 5.1 selected alongwith the other 2 which were selected by default. The audio during booting was fixed and also for GTA 4. I then started with DMC 4 and realized the audio was in stereo mode. Popped in MK and the DTS logo was showing up on HTS as well. Before I could check again with GTA 4 whether I am getting 5.1 Audio or not thunder showers started and had to turn off the TV and pack for the day.

At the moment I know DTS 5.1 works, there are quite a number of folks who have faced issues with DD 5.1 and a number of games are in DD 5.1 :(

The DZ-510 barely has any rather no options for configuring (It had problems with 5.1 AAC as well on my WD Live. Solution - Demux File > Convert Audio to 5.1 AC3 > Mux File - Enjoy). So it all depends on the options available on the PS3. I could not find any advanced settings in the PS3.
