Hi,

I'm confused with the pros & cons of both systems (PS3 & Xbox360 Pro). I want to buy a gaming console

1. Which one is the best deal to go with? (value for money)
2. What about the price rates? If bought from Pallika Bazar, what drawbacks about the version PAL/NTSC & about the region free blue ray dvds?
3. Someone told me that PS3 80G is available in Pallika Bazaar for around 20k along with 2 wireless controllers. Kindly confirm the current tarrifs.

Thanks,
Vik

Don't think any avatars of the PS3 would cost 20K. Much more...
With the X360 having a defunct (now) HD-DVD drive, the PS3 is the way to go.
The advanced architecture of the PS3 means you're going to get a lot of better looking games in the future, than the X360 can handle. Also the PS3 is a very new product, it hardly has any title support as of now, that should change by late 2008.

As of today the PS3 makes a lot more sense.

Those are two conflicting statements. The 1st statement is what makes a 360 a good buy right now. At the present moment, the 360 has a better game library.

The PS3 will be a good buy in 1-1.5 years.

And there are some cross platform games that have performed better on the 360 than on the ps3.

wrong again! PS3 will be a good buy within this year. Remember the following plus points for PS3 this year:

1) Home

2) MGS 4

3) Grand Tauresmo 5

4) Little Big Planet

5) PSN will get an overhaul soon and playing on internet is free in PS3 unlike XBOX 360.

Wait that was a joke right? :ashamed:

If I am not mistaken the 80GB version costs around $499(22.5k)itself in the US.Now if you add the cost of an additional controller then it would be around 25k roughly. Now this is a direct dollar to rupee conversion. If you check on the board then people have been paying a huge dough for their 60GB versions. So it's impossible to get a PS3 80GB version for 20k leave alone the additional wireless controller.

My advice is do whatever you have to but buy these consoles with Indian warranty. As going by most of their current hardware failure issues at any point, you would have a tough time to avail a foreign warranty.

1. Hardware wise, XBOX 360 has more balanced CPU, GPU and memory, PS3 has a very powerful CPU, but does not have a GPU and memory to match.

2. XBOX 360 is plagued by the dreaded RRoD (Red Ring of Death) problem and PS3 has the SOD (Spin of Death) problem making it risky to get either console without warranty. PS3 has one year warranty and XBOX 360 has 3 year warranty for RRoD and 1 year warranty for the rest of the problems. I do not know about XBOX after sales service, but Sony has a very poor after sales support in India. (You will get your replacement only when you threaten them with legal proceedings.) I heard XBOX 360 has better service, But you will need to avail it a number of times.

3. XBOX 360 games are region locked, PS3 titles are not. XBOX 360 has more number of titles globally, but the PAL versions available in India are pretty limited in number. You will get a wider range by getting an NTSC XBOX 360 from the grey market without warranty, but you will require the warranty due to the high failure rate. Legit XBOX 360 games cost from 999/- to 2499/- in India. PS3 titles are fewer in number, but there are enough to keep you absored for some time. Also, as the games are region free, games not available in India are easility imported and can be played on any PS3 version. PS3 games are costlier than XBOX 360 titles with prices 2499/- to 2799/-.

4. The official verison of XBOX 360 Pro costs 24k while the PS3 40GB costs 25k. The 60GB is still available in the retail for 30k, but I suggest you not to go for it as it is the initial version with 90nm processor and its blue ray drives are plagued with the SOD problem. Also its a phased out model. The 40GB PS3 is based on the 65nm processor and runs cooler. Also the SOD problems are less.

^^^^

Very balanced and sensible post by Lord Nemesis up there.

A couple of points of my own to add.

1 Xbox 360 service in India is very decent.

2 If you are buying legit games most of the 360 titles are priced under 2000. (all the MS produced games ie Halo, Viva pinata, Forza, PGR etc retail for 1800 RS. Same for all EA games 1999 RS). So they work out to be cheaper than the PS3 version of the same games always. Plus most legit places like Planet M, Neo sports etc. (in Delhi) carry almost all PAL versions of the 360 games you would want.

3 Xbox online is good but its stupidly expensive. 2200 for a year is horrible value for money.

4 There is no HD movie support if you have a 360. HD DVD is dead and it might be a while before MS release a Blu ray drive.

Having said all these thing I still would consider the 360 to be the better choice. But then again I have a 360 and no PS3 (not untill the end of this year) so my opinion may be a bit skewed.

Oh and one last point.

5 Mass effect. :D

Just to add, I myself own a PS3. I initially got a PS3 60GB PAL and when it got the SOD, I got a 40GB Unit as replacement after a months struggle with Sony India and a final ultimatum that I would initiate legal proceedings againist Sony.

I still have to get a Cheque for 5k to cover the difference between the 60GB and the 40GB Models. Added to that I have more cash inflow this month as I got a bonus 10k from our company as reward for being the "Employee of the Quarter" :P and year end bonus is due too. So was in a dilemma myself whether to get another console (XBOX 360/PSP) and a GPU upgrade for my PC. The GPU upgrade is in for sure (now or sometime later when the 4870X2 is released) as I do most of my serious gaming on the PC, but not not sure whether I should invest in another console after what happened with Sony after sales. :(

If the consoles had been a bit more reliable, I could have got them cheaper from the Grey market and not worry about it, but both consoles are unreliable enough to require a warranty and sadly the after sales support in India is so poor for almost any product, that its a pain to get a repair/replacement done even after you have paid a premium to get it.

BuyOriginalMS Home (Microsoft's official site) is running an offer currently. You can buy the core version for 15K and you get forza2 and viva pinata.
The pro bundle is available for 24k and you get Forza 2 , Viva Pinata, PGR 3 and Yuvraj Singh Cricket as a bundle.
I would suggest you stay away from the gray market if purchasing the xbox 360.

Also do not select a console just because you are anti sony or anti microsoft. Compare the games which these consoles offer see which genre you like and which console caters to your genre more and then take the plunge. The PS3 has some wonderful games coming this summer as well.

Also one more point which is not important to most people but important to some. A PS3 cannot connect to a computer monitor (VGA) without a VGA box or something. I hate playing the Xbox on the TV since on my TV, the text is rather unreadable. So you have to keep that in mind also.

I myself have an Xbox 360 and I am quite happy with it. But the fact that you need to pay money to play live is a bit of a downer.

well said buddyyy..we shld count the console by games release n our need

Thanks all for your valuable suggestions, tips & advises.

I understand that one more important aspect, while purchasing a console, is what genre of games are to be played. My choice is more of war, racing, fighter plane, etc kinda games.
In case, if I go for PS3, it makes lot of sense to buy 40G PAL version. But someone said that for PS3, there are region free games. How about BR movie dvds & normal movie DVDs (if bought from States)?

In Delhi/Gurgaon, which'll be the best place to go for it? One shopkeeper in Pallika is selling PS3 (with 1 wireless controller, remote control & AV cable) for 23500/- (with warranty). Additional controller for 2000/- & HDMI cable for 800/- PS3 games are for 1500/- onwards

I'm sure that in sony world or retail outlets, it'll be bit expensive.

I'm sure my LCD would be able to support PS3 console if connected through HDMI cable. I've LG 32" LCD HD compatible. I don't think I'd need to connect it to my laptop but still no harm in knowing how can it be done?

If you have a 32" LCD it sure will have a HDMI port.......So its very simple, get a HDMI cable. Both the PS3 and ur LCD have HDMI ports. Besides you dont need to use any cable for sound as HDMI carries both, video and audio.

One word of caution for PS3-yet-to-be-owners with 22" and 19" LCDs. Make sure your monitor is HDCP compliant, else you will not get display through PS3s HDMI port. You can connect your PS3 and a LCD monitor using a HDMI-DVI cable, with the HDMI end on the PS3 and the DVI end on the monitor.

As far as I know, laptops don't have video input ports (correct me if I am wrong).
