hello ,
dunno if this has been posted earlier.Im planning to buy a gaming console and i want to choose out of PS3 and Xbox. Please answer the following queries :
a>which one of the two is more reliable in terms of technical issues?
b>Can i play pirated games on either of them?
c>Heard xbox has heating issues?is it really that bad?
d>do both the consoles have common games?
e>I shall be getting it from US so "generally' is indian warranty covered?
d>Does mod chip can be put for either of them?
e>Finally , xbox is cheaper , is it worth over buying PS3?

Thanks in advance guys,

buy playstation if you planning to game on to the years to come or else stick to xbox 360. Even if you get a mod chip and put it in, you void the warranty. Dont ignore the famous "ring of death" disease on x-360

May the force be with you

a>which one of the two is more reliable in terms of technical issues?

PS3.

b>Can i play pirated games on either of them?

Go to jail.

c>Heard xbox has heating issues?is it really that bad?

Doubles as a stove.

d>do both the consoles have common games?

To some extent. X360 has a higher no. of exclusives though.

e>I shall be getting it from US so "generally' is indian warranty covered?

Most hardware warranties don't cover operating it abroad.

d>Does mod chip can be put for either of them?

As same as in b>

e>Finally , xbox is cheaper , is it worth over buying PS3?

The upcoming 40gb PS3 will be prised at 25K which is the same as the X360 premium. But, considering all things, x360 is the better buy.

Explain yourself!

I was in the same dilemma as you some time back. I am copy pasting a post I had made in another forum regarding the reasons I choose PS3 instead of XBOX 360.

XBOX 360 has more games, cheaper games and unreliable hardware.

PS3 has lesser number of games, costlier games, reliable hardware and more customizable and functional.

I almost got myself a XBOX 360 Halo 3 Special Edition console, but changed to the PS3 at the last moment.

Some reasons for the same.

1. Almost similar price range XBOX 360 Halo 3 Special Edition with 20GB HDD 27k, PS3 60GB Edition - 30k. Also there is good likely-hood of decent price decrease on XBOX 360 by the end of the year.

2. The lot of Halo 3 Special Edition XBOX360's in India are still not Falcon based. Old stock. RRoD cases with the new versions of XBOX's too. So its still not reliable. Warranty and servicing is not fast in India, especially if you not in one of the metros.

3. Games are Region Coded for XBOX 360, but you still have to get the PAL version for warranty. The number of XBOX 360 games released in India is very less. PS3 games are not region coded, so I have more availability of games compared to XBOX 360.

4. PS3 more Customizable and functional compared to XBOX 360

5. There is more probability of my Company gifting us an XBOX 360 than a PS3. :p

6. XBOX 360 has been on the shelves for a long time now. So theres probability that MS releases a announces a new console one of these days.

I do not have any bias towards any one of these consoles, but I got the PS3 with my money with the hope that I can either get a XBOX 360 as a gift or buy it myself later when the company pays bonus. :p

In the end, I would suggest that if you want to play lots of games now, go for the XBOX 360, if you want to play lots of games in the future for PS3.

Also modding is simply not worth it on either of the consoles. on XBOX 360 the low reliability of the hardware makes it necessary to have local warranty. Also MS is banning modded XBOX 360's on live. On PS3, the cost of Blue-Ray media makes it impractical to pirate (at least for the time being).

Also getting a modded XBOX 360 from US is a huge gamble. There will be no warranty here and XBOX 360 hardware even after the new 65mn CPU upgrade is still quite unreliable hardware. MS has recently extended the warranty for RRoD problems to 3 years and everything else is covered for 1 year. If you buy in India, you can at least claim warranty in case of RRoD. If you get it from outside you will not be able to do anything.

Comparatively PS3 is very reliable, I had run my PS3 for hours at a stretch with out issues. Also you can buy a PS3 form US without issues. PS3 titles are not region coded like XBOX 360, so you can buy titles from anywhere. the only thing is that there are not many titles at the moment. The good titles/exclusives you can count on your fingers. Also titles are costlier averaging at 2.5k per title.

As for as the future of these consoles is concerned, as per the developers, about 70% of the XBOX 360's full potential has been used till date while in the case of PS3, about 30% has been used. Going by the numbers PS3 has more potential for the future. But its not as simple as that.

PS3 is a lot difficult to program than XBOX 360 and getting that untapped potential is not an easy thing to do. Most of the multi-platform developers trying to make a quick buck are shunning the PS3 because of the difficulty in porting, but exclusive developers are considering the PS3's power a boon and they are gradually optimizing their engines for it. PS3 would probably lose many multi-platform games, but I am predicting that there would be some brilliant exclusives (may be not that many in number) for this platform in the future.

XBOX 360 on the other hand is slowly reaching its max potential. But there is still scope for some brilliant games on this platform. I guess MS would be about ready to release its next console in another 1~1.5 years depending on the saturation of the XBOX 360's in the market.

Overall both consoles have their advantages and disadvantages, either of them can be worth buying depending on your needs, so you decide on your own. As for getting a modded console, I strongly suggest againist it unless you have loads of money to not to bother about a bricked console without warranty. Maybe it would be ok on PS3 (when it gets modded that is) in the future, but not on the XBOX 360.

^^ I doubt xbox 360's era will last as long as ps3 in the future.

Oh, I thought you had some evidence. Carry on then.

I just can't understand why people think this gen will be an exact repeat of the last one. Personally, I'm not expecting the next360 till 2010. The Xbox was a disaster so MS put it out of it's misery as quickly as they could. The X360 on the other hand is nothing like it's predecessor and is doing very well. I expect a good five years from this console.

The PS3 itself might run a year or two longer(Sony would have you believe till 2016), but only because it launched later and because Sony will try to squeeze every last profit they can from this thing to make up for all the current losses.

Also, there is nothing to suggest that the X360 is already showing signs of aging(all that "Gears of War is the peak of the X360's power" is complete BS). Also, PS3's untapped potential=speculative BS. Further more, there is nothing to suggest that PS3 will end up getting more exclusives at any point in the future.

The problem with talk of PS3's untapped power, is that the untapped power is all in the CPU (incidentally I doubt that any X360 games truly use all 3 cores at 100%). But the GPU is no more powerful than in the X360. So I think they'll be pretty much the same life... what you will have is Sony games will tend to improve over time, whereas in the case of X360 that improvement will come much quicker. And no, neither has reached their peak yet.

Couldn't there possibly be a better realization of that power. Maybe in the form of physical calculations or maybe the number of independent characters or objects on screen at once. I'm still unsure the extent to which the CPU plays a part in how a game plays out, though.

ok just to clarify & make this guys decission easier. never hard mod a 360, always do a softmod on a 360 i.e upgrade the roms firmware. the main reason for this is that a softmod does not void warranty so you can enjoy playing downloaded games on the console & at the time of red ring of death which is going to happen, you can get it replaced.

couple of friends have already got their softmodded pal consoles replaced & again remodded them.

hope this makes your decission clear.

p.s - if i was given a choice i would still pickup the ps3 :)

x360 is better for live , as to oppose to ps3 dont get me wrong on the ps3 is good aswell ,
there is good and bad for both to be concitered , you can get banned on 360 , bad consoles breakin down ,

read up on them really to get a better opinion of them

Get the X360 for the games. You know, games, the things that define the very existence of a console. Yeah, that sort of thing.

You will get banned on Xbox Live, not from playing games.
If you do that and get banned, then its your fault. You are trying to play pirated stuff online.
About RROD. The problem has been fixed with newer consoles. So those who are buying it in near future need not worry.
Always buy the consoles locally. Consoles are meant for long term use, its better to have local warranty on any console.

Welll I would suggest u to go for the Xbox 360... I bought the X360 solely because I loved the X360 controller.... The controller for the Ps3 is nothing great... Its the same as the Ps2 controller and the idiots removed the rumble feature( the newer DS3 controllers do have rumble ..but u have to buy them seperately)...

And the games for X360 are getting cheaper by the day.. There are games available for a price of Rs.999 (older ones)....

No funky, there were design changes made to minimize the problem, and the 65nm upgrade is supposed to eliminate the problem altogether, but there are still RRoD's being reported for the falcon based XBOX360's too. So the problem is still there. Its not over yet. Thats why I have been suggesting him to stay legit with XBOX 360.

yes what you say is correct, but when a consoles failure rate is a little over 60% the choice isnt so clear.
