Thanks guys..
Hearing about some horror stories of sony not honoring warranty if not bought in certain places..
is it true for PS3 as well.. (eg buying from ebay etc..)

does sony have a extended warranty for ps3's?

I had same doubt before buying from Amazon. I had a live chat in which I was assured that warranty will be honoured. When asked about what if worst case I do not get it, reply was it is our responsibility.

I have this chat record with me on e-mail.

Coming to extended warranty, AFAIK, Sony does not provide any such thing. However if it fails in 2nd and 3rd year from purchase, they give some %discount on purchasing other. However I can not recollect that % figure.

^^ Thanks mate!!
AFAIK sony provides playstation protection plan, but only abroad...
Buggers want to make money, even though its priced higher here..

Thanks all for your suggestions..
Finalised on PS3 from Ebay (Listing say sony warranty & 97% Feedback) for 15030.

Is going through ebay OK in terms of warranty?
help out quick guys...

Warranty should not be an issue as long as you have the bill, the guys are not hell bent on screwing you despite the bill and the PS3 is an Indian PS3.

^^ Thanks @prabs..
Just clicked the buynow button after reading your post.

@All,
Can the component cable limit the output to only 480p? (Or does it vary on cable to cable)

Cables are available in ebay but mentions only 480p output in description..
Can anybody shed some light into this?

@thirumalkumaran - Check the following links

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/videooutput.html

http://www.geek.com/games/latest-ps3-model-wont-output-hd-over-a-component-cable-1402441/
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-new-ps3s-drop-hd-component-support

In a gist - The Older PS3s did support HD resolutions over component cables and component cables do supprt that resolution but all that is moot because the current model the PS3 superslim is said to have dropped the feature.

@prabs
Thanks for the info mate.. You are right...
But the superslim models dropped HD res only on Bluray playback. Heard the games are fully supported.. (Even discussed some posts above)

My doubt was if ps3 supports 1080p/720 can the cable restrict the resolution? (According to logic it shouldn't) but wnated an opinion with the users...

It is possible that they are advertised as per bluray playback and not games.

Can you share links of the cables?

Sorry for the late reply.

First things first a cable can determine the quality but not the resolution.

2 things that I noted in the description are -
1. It mentions it supports 480p
2. It mentions PS2, PS3, PS3 Slim

Using the cable for PS2 will result in 480p output.
480p is the minimum resolution supported by PS3 - 480p, 720p, 1080i & 1080p
The Fat & the slim supported outputs of upto 1080p through component.
This product doesn't even mention PS3 Super slim and it is the super slim in which the situation is a bit murky. Since it is said to support higher resolution for games but only 480p for Blurays. may be a guy using component cable with Super Slim can clarify the specifics here.
By not mentioning the Super Slim in the description he has plucked your wings.

In short you will have to take a chance if it works good for you, if it doesn't you don't have a case and no excuse for returning it as the seller has not mentioned support for super slim in the description.
Also the product seems to be a chinese knock off so no info on the product or brand.

The genuine cable is a bit too expensive -

@prabs...
Thanks for the reply..
I already decided to take a chance as the geniune ones are much costlier than a HDMI Switcher, so this is my better option, if it doesn't work, the next option is to get a HDMI Switcher.. or plug and remove devices from TV...

GUYS!!!!!!

MyPS3 arrived today so is the cable..

After connecting to my component in on TV and multiout on PS3.. (After setup)..
Behold... Options for 720p, 1080i & 1080p are visible...And working...

Double checked by info on TV states the same... (opted for 720p finally as my TV is a 720p)
Games are displayed in 720p as well so 1080p should be possible...

Success at the risk taken..

There is no custom firmware for the Super slim models. It's only the ODE method which again is limited to a certain models I suppose, not been to updated on that.

Honestly, don't bother with it. You're better off enjoying your new console with direct purchases. Hunt around the forums and grab a bunch of used copies which should now be going dirt cheap.

Congrats on finally settling on the console. BTW, I myself am using the component cable and on 720p setting, as the 1080p one has some issues over component output. Don't worry about it. Pretty much every game is 720p anyway and only a handful of non-essential games are in 1080p, which again shouldn't have a huge impact on the IQ.
