Graphic Cards Purchasing a New Dx10/10.1 Supported Graphics Card - to be or not to be

We are so much excited about the new release of 4770 gfx from AMD and looking forward to see what Nvidia will do to answer this. Also Win7 will be released by next year and getting rave reviews on the RC released so far.Considering this early fact as a positive sign and next upgrade for PC gamer from Windows users, I like to share few thoughts and questions with my fellow TEs and like to know theirs views on this.Windows 7 will support Dx10,10.1 and DX 11. Windows 7 will provide Windows XP mod – does it mean that >>

  1. Life of DX 9 is extended further?
  2. Till when game developers will support DX9 games along with Dx10/11 ?
  3. People like me who are still using Xp and happy with DX 9, is it OK to buy a new graphics card with dx10/10.1 support or wait for the DX11 supported graphics card to be released by AMD/Nvidia by Q3/Q4 2009

Thanks

# Till when game developers will support DX9 games along with Dx10/11 ?
DX9 and WinXP are likely to remain supported in games for at least the next one year.DX9 cards should manage to run future DX10/11 games (though probably not with good FPS )

It is better to wait for DX11 cards since they are likely to be vastly superior to the existing DX10/10.1 cards.

^^ it does

and again features tessellation hardware which won't see support in an official API until the release of DirectX 11.

meaning support for dx11 is already there but is not accessible to developers due to lack of dx11 api.

does it mean that current dx10/10.1 games can be played in dx9 with a loss of fps ?

Most of DX11 features can be run on down-level hardware-DX9 and DX10 that is.

Only thing that requires hardware support is a Programmable Tessellation Unit, which is present on all RV670/770 GPUs , and Shader Model 5.0 about which I have no idea.

DX 11 is only a superset of DX10.1 . Most ATi hardware should cope up very well.

Personaly after waiting as long as you have I would buy a 4870 atleast. If U want to buy, buy now. Dont wait. Now U will wait for Dx11, then 12, this cycle continues, U will get older 1 day man.

+1

as there will always be something better out there than what we buy...

yeah man,,discrete graphics market is very topsy turvy- have to consider my current rig also-dont want to go for higher end card(4830),considering my rig as bottleneck and requirement of a new psu ;and when trying to settle for mainstream(4670) then got scared that not able to play games released end of this year..I am stucked badly :(

I really miss my old days (p3,intel onboard)- when I only enjoyed the game without considering the fps and quality and all- now a days its more about fps, quality visuals n too much calculations and lost the raw hunger for enjoying the game.the more I know -more it become complicated..hack

hmm..4770 support SM 4 ..I think the new 49XX will support SM 5..gfx companies will continuously release new card every quarter with added features..look at scene at January 09- all are running madly for 4850..now people will suggest madly for 4770..after 2 months again it will be 49XX card or the smaller cousin of 47XX

there is only one only dx10/10.1 game that i'm aware of and thats stormrise,it won't be playable on dx9 just like you can't play vantage on dx9.unless you find some uber hacks.:p

Does HD 4770 offer 100% support for DX 11???
I have read that HD 4800 series offer 99% support to DX 11. i.e DX 10.1 cards are 99% compatable with DX11.

its theoretical so far and may be a marketing tricks to push another products to the market - thumb rule <<early phase is of any technology is not fully optimized or matured to justify the cost of ownership>>- if you want to buy a graphics card within 1-3 months -don't care much about dx11 support- be happy with dx10 or dx10.1.

gts250 will support dx11 4.0 compute shaders, other functionality is upto nvidia, how much they can hack into it the way they "unofficially" supported dx10.1 this time.
