'Puter speakers for <20K

@Wingzero,
So tweaks can reduce 'boom boom'? Any z5500 owners can confirm?

@SidhuPunjab,
I already have, what I think are, a good headphone(Razer 5.1) and a good sound card(xfi prelude). So this budget is for speakers only.

@The Alchemist
But AEs lack a sub! I am sure they have bass, but I am also sure it will not be enuf for me!

^Don't bother with A2 if u want proper bass. I checked out a brand new A2 which hasn't been burned in, wasn't impressed at all, my MX5021 sounds way way better than the A2. Hope to check it out after a month after it has been burned in and placements are done properly.

wat boom box ???

just lower the output of the SUB with the very handy remote in ur hand
and it then becomes as u wud want

Duh, I think u should get a first hand audition of a burned-in A2, A5 or the MX5021; :)

U might probably get a feeling of hw these monsters compare to a Z5500 pitying the 10" woofer it comes with;

Now thats bass not boom;

Fine tuning is another thing whuch those dont require; :)

So z5500's bass(or boom) situation can only be corrected upto a certain limit, acording to some gurus here... Right now, my preference is leaning more to the AudioEngine A5 than on z5500. This is despite it's lack of 5.1 channel and a sub. Can I have a sub with my A5, please? Anyone hear of such a combo sounding good? I can spend extra on a sub, if doing so will work. I really want the lower freqs (w/o disappointing boom).

audioengine have an active sub themselves that you can add on. but i suggest you try the A5 first before deciding if you want it and if you need an extra sub

^When I said I can pay more, I didn't mean extra 20k :P Besides, that sub isn't listed in bajaao. Any other subs I can buy for a budget of ~5K?

On a sidenote, I'll probablybe buying a new computer table so that I can have the speakers at ear-level instead of having them on the top shelf tilted-down toward me.

i neva heard AE5 nor AE2 but read abt them n ppl love it...
AE2 has a sweet bass and great...
IMO...k since u wanna spend more u can go with AE5....else mx5021 or klipsch is best...under 10k...preferably the klipsch
so finally u nt goin for 5.1 setup rite??....

@bottle ya thts nt listed.....

Remember the suggestion by audiophiles might not exactly satisfy you. Most ordinary people(chaps like me :):) ) might actually enjoy the bass..I would suggest somehow get a demo if possible...Don't want to regret what could be an expensive decision...In Bangalore somebody got the z5500 fro 15k odd..I think unbeatable value

^That was a great price. There was also a z5500 one day sale in the hot-deals section for 15k.

@raj_pol, good point.

So, today is the big day for me. Is bajaao the only guys selling AE5 in India? Anyone selling them in Chennai? I had sent an email to Bajaao regarding this, availablility/recommendation of sub, shipping,etc but haven't heard from them since. Come to think of it, I haven't been to a speaker shop, per se, in my life. But, anyways, I got to make a decision today.

My heart is again hovering over the z-5500. I inquired delta and they say it's Rs.17,900. I have to inquire a few more shops at ritchie when I get there. Anyone know a shop with better quote for this speaker?

Well, long story short:
I bought the Z-5500.

Short story long:
I went to ritchie street and saw a temporary logitech speaker stall outside Lotus and I thought to myself that this was my lucky day! I caught my first (live)glimpse of the Z-5500 and damn, that sub is HUGE! I've seen it in a few reviews I read, but seeing it first hand is something. Can't imagine how 12" and 15" subs look! Perhaps a couple of years down the line...but I digress.
I asked the guys minding the stall about the price and they quoted me 20K! And they told me that it was a new product from Logitech. I told them that it was available for years and can be had for ~16K, but they assured me that it has been launched in India only a month or so ago.

Well, so much for a lucky day. I moved on and inquired a few places and finally got what seemed to be the lowest price I could find, of 17.5K, from Mahavir Computers. Also got a couple of 500GB 7200.11 32MB HDDs @ Rs.3900 each.

Well, end of story. Perhaps I could've been happier with an AE2/5 setup, but for now I cannot imagine it... coz everytime I hear one of my favorite songs in my Z-5500, I get the widest grin I've had on my face :D

Finally, thanks for all your inputs.

Keep the sub on the ground;

Keep the centre speakers on the table below ut LCD or u may wall hang it and orient it so that it faces u; :)

Err if you game on headphones then why on earth blow so much money on a 5.1. The Z5500 doesn't even have a tweeter and nor is the full range driver in the league of real full range drivers like lowther or fostex. Anyway now that you have it.... enjoy it to the max but make sure you don't listen to an audioengine or else you'd be cursing yourself.
