CPU/Mobo Q9400 or P2 X4 940BE or q9550 in VFM?

P-II 720 + 790gx + DDR3.

+1 for this combo and real meaty card.
More than 15k for a proccy/motherboard not at all worth if u are using the rig to play @ home unless u have a 30" monitor and can make out the difference between 100fps and 200fps in ganes.

Now that's highly inaccurate. Unless you are playing 2~3 year old games your statement does not hold true. Try out any of the recent games and you will stress out your CPU like anything.

There is nothing like wastage when it comes to CPU processing power as long as you have the money to buy. My proccy + mobo cost me 33k and even after I overclock it to 3.6GHz, I have a number of games in which I can max it out without getting 100FPS on a 20" Display @ 1680 x 1050.

if you want to have a quad which you are going to overclock and you care about the power it draws then certainly go for an intel one, my money would be on a Q9550 with the E0 stepping...

the new Phenom II X4 955BE is a good performer but is a power hog so even if you are spending less money on the setup now, in the long run you would end up paying more in terms of your power bill....

Power consumption wise Q9550 and 955 BE are almost the same. 955 BE is 125W tdp as 940 BE.

955 BE is better VFM than Q9550 as Anandtech and many other review sites says.

I am planning to get myself one. But I am confused about how much I need that beast of a proccy. My main purposes are gaming, occasional video encoding like stuff, downloading etc. Can you pass me your opinions?

man you're sure you are going to overclock'em cpu's, agreed both are 45nm but 955BE takes close to 1.5V to hit 4.0ghz and then its not guaranteed on all the CPU's but a Q9550 E0 on a ASUS P5Q or Gigabyte EP45 will most certainly hit 4.0ghz at a lower voltage...

the LGA 775 will be redundant soon as new nehalem cpus are going to be out and also the 32nm shrink with LGA-1156 socket... AM3 socket is new and would last longer than the LGA 775, ddr3 is definitely the future... thus again a dilemma...

so if you have a decent enough config at the moment then I'd suggest you hold onto it... increase your budget and then make the decision as the current price drops and better cpus hit the market for both the AM3 and 1136/1156...
