Folks,

Can ATOM handle following:

1. Apache.

2. Open SSH

3. FTP

4. Samba

5. BT

6. Active net filtering - Will be handled by the kernel anyways.

Yup no gui would be installed on this box, so there is no X. Also many unwanted modules wont be loaded in the kernel.

Client: Max 25 at a time. Each may make maximum 10 parallel connection. I have my firefox optimized for high parallel connection, hope that wont be issue for ATOM serving apache.

Let me know.

Go for it, i am sure atom will be able to pull it off easily for 20-25 users. People used to use even p4's for network servers and happily handle this number of users. Atom is still better. Normal iptables filtering and network routing is certainly no issue but when u say ftp, total amount of disk access comes into picture but thats very much variable depending on amount of up/down users will do via ftp .

Quite capable of this. Unless you are going to serve large amounts of data to each client yo should be just fine.

At the same time, in lower cost you should be able to pick up a low end c2d which would outperform the atom by a good margin.

Are you just looking for a low power/ green mini server?

I think there wont be much issue, atom is as fast as an old p4 in these sort of workloads .Even single core would comfortably do the job.

These guys are claming atom (dc of course) faster than p4 2.8 on those workloads!

Also i think performance can vary widely with distro used.

Can Atom PCs be assembled? I mean are the processor and other parts available in the market like any other PC, or do we have to buy a netbook?

yes you can assemble a Atom based PC. D945GCLF is a motherboard which comes integrated with the atom processor.:ohyeah:

should be around 3.7k

How about Celeron with RAID Capable motherboard;
1. Power saving
2. RAID 0 will give better DATA throughput

Atoms are typically bundled as Mobo+proc.

There are a few offerings from intel with the 945 mobo and a better option has now emerged with the nVidia ion platform. Which is clearly a better implementation for the atom in terms of overall performance, albeit at a slightly highr cost.

Zotac sells the ion combos around here.

You have to purchase a mini-itx case, the power supply (one of the ions comes with a PSU as well :) ) and RAM to go with it.

Hope this helps.
