Query regarding router .

My friend is having a cyber cafe running with 5 pcs.

Earlier we were using a switch for communication. I had setup one proxy server and setup other pcs to share internet connection of proxy server.

But now we have dlink dir 300 router which is serving everything and we don't have to manually assign IP address to individual pcs .

Request you to help us understanding concept behind using router over switch.

Pinga,

If you are familiar with the OSI Networking Model, then switch works at layer 2 whereas router works at layer 3.

In your case, the Dlink router is also acting as the DHCP server which will assigned IP addresses to the PC's directly connected to it.

In case of switches, there is no IP addressing, so earlier you used to assigned IP addresses manually. Switches work on the physical address of the devices, commonly known as MAC address.

Router works on IP address.Since, all your PCs now have IP address they themselves can use the internet connection available using their IP address as the source address.

Actually, there is a lot more than what I explained, please refer:

Hope it helps,

Rahul Mengale.
